Project revealed here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=83833

Hi guys,

After some more discussion with Gateron, Project Stab is doable so I'm here to gauge interest on the demand of these stabs. As PCB mounted stabs are hardly ever used commercially, this project will need A LOT of interest in order to be economically feasible as I expect the MOQ to be similar to switches (which is a lot).

What's new:

1) Stabs will come "pre-clipped" and take on the vintage shape like so:
If anyone has some disassembled pictures of the slider, please post/PM me. If anyone has pictures of the Ducky/Vortex orange stabs internals, I'd be interested in looking at those too.

2)The housing will be clear, (and so can the sliders?colour vote?)
-Clear slider
-Purple Slider
-???colour (comment)
If we end up with clear sliders, the mould would most likely be different from other colours. It's just the nature of the transparent plastics that prevents "regular" coloured plastics from being used.

3)Stabilizer mould will obviously be smoother than current generation Cherry stabs.

4)I know that spacebar wires have been really hard to source as Cherry P/Ns don't exist for them. I'll be getting the wires custom bent and gold plated!

Not sure about demand of screw-in style.

I would love some screw-in ones, color isn't important.

I'd be in for some. I'm all for green but transparent would probably be best for everyone.

I'm in for a dozen. Users can easily dye their own to whatever color they prefer. So just offer clear.

Also I do like the screw in kind but wasn't aware there could be a compatibility issue. So I'm okay if we do the "toothpick secured" kind.
I'm back.

My noob question, is it fits my Vortex Race 1? what's the different feel from my original Cherry stabs? Thanks.

I have a set of screw in stabs if you'd like to borrow them! They've already been clipped, but I'd be happy to send them to you, just shoot me a pm!

I'd be down for at least 6 sets. Preferably 4 with 6.25x spacebar, and 2 with 7x.

So yeah!

I'd be buying a lot of sets. Extra stabs are always good to have, and colors don't make any difference to me. I do have plans for a silver/purple 40%, so purple sliders would be perfect for that.

I know this is about Cherry stabs and I normally wouldn't mention this except for the part where you said you were getting custom stab wires bent, is there any chance 7u Costar stab wires could be produced at some point? They are ridiculously hard to come across, it took me 8+ months and too much money to get the one I'm using now.

This would be awesome. I'd be in for at least a couple sets.

EDIT: No preference for colour. Both clear and purple would look good, in my opinion.

Octagon - 62g Cherry tactile greys
Phantom - 65g Cherry tactile greys
FC660M - Cherry blues
KC60 - Gateron browns

Show Image

Yes, it'll fit in your Vortex Race 1 since it's PCB mount. Chances are your stabs aren't "clipped", so the stabilized keys feel mushy when bottoming out. The goal of these new stabs is to have them factory made flush so no clipping is required.

I have a set of screw in stabs if you'd like to borrow them! They've already been clipped, but I'd be happy to send them to you, just shoot me a pm!

Thanks for the offer. I'm in the process of obtaining some vintage stabs that are pictured in the OP, but if that falls through I'd hit you up! Oh and stabs sent to me most likely won't be coming back as it will be sent to Gateron. To make sorting easier, stabs will be sold in one pack as follows:

7x 2u (covers full size keyboards, custom split space layouts, 1800, etc)
1x 6.25u
1x 7u

I know this is about Cherry stabs and I normally wouldn't mention this except for the part where you said you were getting custom stab wires bent, is there any chance 7u Costar stab wires could be produced at some point? They are ridiculously hard to come across, it took me 8+ months and too much money to get the one I'm using now.

I'm not sure how feasible that is due to MOQ requirements from the metal factory that Gateron uses. :(

Oh, I could also probably provide the stabs from a pok3r, if that would help as well!

I'm very interested in seeing how the orange stabs look like from the underside. I've yet to see or find a picture of them not installed in a Ducky/Poker.

Just wanted to say that I have had problems with screw-in stabs on GON and winkeyless.kr 60% boards. The screw creates a short on the LED pads. I've had to change all the stabs to standard ones. And to be honest the screw doesn't bring anything from my point of view. Normal ones are better.

That just adds more work to a problem that shouldn't really exist in the first place. I like the concept of screws but I've honestly never had a problem with any of my regular PCB mounted stabs.

The regular ones are perfect, the screw type are just fancy and nothing more. Tried a plastic washer it was just a pain. And forget about beeing more solid the screw ones, they're not, they get pulled as easy as the normal ones. The plastic is soft and after you remove the screw a couple of times you can forget about them, they get loose.

if you are taking these things on and off a board,  don't apply so much torque to strip the threads?

well, i would like to buy a bunch if the price is alright. ^^
i really dislike the plate mounted stab housing, they never stay in.
and the pcb mounted ones are ok, but sometimes they come out.
i was placing small bits of plastic in between the two prongs to keep them in place.
for me these would be great for boards without plates.
i have a bunch of paper thin plastic washers that would be perfect for keeping the screws from contacting any spots on the pcb.

I have interests in this. I haven't used my screw-in stabs from Ivan's buy yet because I could see where the screws would dig in and short my FaceW, and haven't had time to go get, or have made, mini plastic washers.

The stripped threads is also of concern, it is just a screw into plastic. Maybe a little tiny threaded nut and longer screws, or a recess in the plastic where the nut is held could help?

Has anyone thought of a way to reduce or eliminate stab ringing too? It's especially nasty with a heavier spring under a 7u spacebar.

Thick lube and bandaid mod below the stab :) If you cut carefully, it won't even show.

@zeal, these are off of a pok3r! Hope that helps. They are potato pics from my phone, so if you need something better, I have a dslr and a macro lens I can use. I just got lazy after about two hours of desoldering/replacing stabs and then resoldering

And this kills the Upswing Ring from releasing the key? I'm having difficulties imagining what Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages achieve for this.

Is that a PCB stab wire in a plate mount stab? Many of us waited a few extra months for GMK Dolch because the plate mount stabs accidentally got paired with the middle-bend wires..

It depends on the board.  On some of my boards, anytime I pop a cap, the pop in ones come out and I have to reseat them.  On those boards they also tend to feel a little loose and make more noise than the screw in ones.  If I use a screw in stabilizer, I don't have any of those problems.

If you're really worried about them coming loose, there are various things you can put on the threads to make them tougher to unscrew.

Haha! That's just off another set. It doesn't actually go in the pok3r, I just needed the flat bar for the pok3r since I reassembled it with pcb mount stabs!

Thanks, very much appreciated. This confirms that the sliders were flattened and "clipped".

If you lube your stabs properly and apply some on the bandaid, you'll have 0 rattle. You can vigorously shake a freshly modded PCB and you won't hear a single rattle.

Yeah but all clear stabs will work better will all switches and they can still be dyed.

I really like this idea but I'm a little scared of what the price would be. A gold-plated stab set is pushing the boundaries of what is reasonable for keyboard parts IMO.

Love the idea of transparent stabs, and would definitely be down for a bunch as well!  :thumb:

Going all clear (so clear housing & slider) to match every type of switch would be the most universal choice imo and therefor probably best to reach moq.
Also, I personally prefer standard vs gold plated wires for a more technical and less blingy look. (not a huge fan of anything gold plated)

Purple sliders with gold plated wires would almost be a deal breaker for me tbh, since I prefer using linears which f.e. on Zealios would have clear sliders as well.
After all, having all clear sliders on switches, but purples on stabs is definitely worse then having purple Zealios with all clear stabs.  ;)

In terms of the wires, those could probably still be replaced with regular ones for people who don't like the added bling of gold plating like myself.

I think I'd be down for all clear or white stabs, with gold wires. Although I'm not particular about wire color, slider color would be a dealbreaker.

Well, it seems that Gateron is unwilling to produce stabs in transparent plastic, only in white/milky due to a few reasons. Also given the lack of response, it wouldn't be ideal to create two new moulds for a single run. :(

Time to work on Zealio-S (which will definitely happen).

It looks like it's a no go, there's not enough interest for the cost of creating new molds and the moq. Even though it seemed like Zeal pumped out a **** ton of switches last round that is still considered very minuscule in the eyes of Gateron.

Well, I just got my quotes in for moulds and stab prices... It's doable depending on pricing. What kind of pricing are people expecting for 1 set consisting of: 7x 2u stabs, 1x 6.25u, 1x 7u? How many stab sets are you willing to order?

*please note that stabs may either be translucent white or transparent clear depending on the final result.

Whatever it takes to get these.

As a minimum, I'd be willing to buy a minimum of 5 at about $20 per set. At most, I'd be willing to pay about $30 for five sets, and if it's less, I'd definitely be willing to purchase more!

I'm willing to buy 3 sets.  I would buy more but just can't right now.  It does seem like there are always people looking for stabs, but the supply comes in fits and starts.  Specifically the 6.25u.  Having a reputable store stock them regularly would help a lot of people I think.  Where could we find such a store???? :D

I'm interested.  Don't really care about transparency or whether they are screwed or not (just that it will work on all boards) (the preclipped feature is a nice timesaver though), what interests me is that they are smoother than modern stabs.

Has anyone thought of a way to reduce or eliminate stab ringing too? It's especially nasty with a heavier spring under a 7u spacebar.

What's stab ringing?  I don't notice any of that on my boards.

I get it pretty bad on my 7u spacebar w/ PCB mount stabs w/ heavier spring, and it's worse when I flip the spacebar. Just tap on the spacebar a couple times, if it sounds clattery, that's what I'm calling stab ringing.

I don't notice it.  I use o-rings and lube the stabs, maybe that has an effect. My heaviest spring is 67g.

would there be an option to just get 2 unit stabs or would we only be able to buy full sets?  either way you can put me down for some

Interested in clear housings and purple sliders, some wires depending on pricing, I have more than enough of all of them but I'd get some if price is good. The only way to see trough and enjoy your slider colors will be having a clear housing.

Interested! I really just thinking about clear stab after ordering R2 Zealios, and VOILA! here it is, an IC of it.
My cent: please no gold wire, there's no gold (at least no utterly visible besides the Zealios spring) to match it. Just make it a simple usual silver one.

One question: Why it is Cherry one and PCB one? More firm? Cause sliders can be colored to match Zealios Switch?
Somehow I like the easiness of Costar Plate Mounted one.

And I believe Zealios-S is a silencer add-on for switches. Do you have a prize of 70 of them if I'm right?  :p

Zealio-S is a tactile hologram.  The reason it won't debut until later this year is because the stem has a non-euclidian geometry that makes it incompatible with all existing keycaps.  Manufacturing keycaps that can fit Zealio-S requires a 5-dimensional injection mold.  Zealio-S are expected to cost 50 cents each.   Because of the unique manufacturing process,  keycaps for Zealio-S are expected to cost $8 - $17 trillion,  each.  I've heard that typing on them produces a sensation of the typist's consciousness resonating with the universe.

About the stabilizers: can they be installed on a prebuilt keyboard without having to desolder the switches and remove the plate?

Probably not, unless you have a plate like the one that winkeyless uses, which is designed to do that.

Would these be less loose, noisy and wobbly compared to Cherry stabillizers? Because that's really what we need for stabilizers.

I'd be down for 3-4 sets if the were clear housings, purple stems, and gold wires, like the switches. I personally love the colors and would love my entire board to be decked out like it.

A transparent switch stem isn't possible as transparent POM doesn't exist. Any other material wouldn't be as smooth.

bump. Progress update.

The taobao ones are very likely made out of polycarbonate. That material isn't optimal for smoothness and produces high pitched clacking sounds. Just looking at the surface, you can tell it's made from a very rough mould. No competition.

I just returned from a trip to Gateron and the transparent stabs are underway. ETA: 50 days until mould completion.

What will it look like?
-Screw in style PCB Mount
-Vintage "U" shape "factory-clipped" feet (since it's U shape, no more confusing which way the stab wire enters)
-Fully transparent nylon housing
-24k gold plated stabilizer wires in 2x, 6.25x, 7x.
-Gold plated screws

I need a new name for these stabilizers. :(

Project #2 will be released when stabilizers are out too.

will these have a smoother travel than the cherry stabs?  I think that in the current state cherry stabs affect the feel of switch quite significantly, in a bad way, I wonder if this can be improved upon.

project 2 = zeal gmk qmx clip for plate mount?  and if yes would it affect keytravel at all?  I use o-rings because i think 4mm is super long so that would be cool if you could change travel with it.  And will that be released at the same time as the stabs?

Are this "old style sliders" compatible with usual PCB like GH60/Satan/Sentraq/GoN? I mean the screw-in part. Also would like to know the real difference with current Cherry Stabs which I feel quite sucks.

Yes, old style sliders / screw in style are compatible with all the current generation custom PCBs. The only difference is they come with a flat base, so no more clipping required, and instead of 2 push out plastic pins that sometimes dislodge, you can now screw in the stabilizer.

Sounds promising, 50 days until GB? At the same time with my Sentraq drop then. Seems like my stabs choice will go on this ZeStabs. Waiting for GB announcement  :thumb:

the stems have the  U-shaped feet but they are not screw in type. aside from that they are loud (without tuning)

Thanks for the video, ntw. Seeing the stabilizers stand all the way up without any grease or tuning is not good...Stabilizers should be able to fall down on its own.

Zeal, any updates on when your transparent cherry stabby will be available? I have ordered some R3 zealios, would be best if the stabby can be shipped together. In any case, hope will be on sale before VE.A ship. Plan to use them for it.

Thank you.

If you read up a bit it'll be 50 days before the moulds are even done.

It'll be a while before the stabs are even ready to be sold.

Just got an updated 3D render of my stabilizers... Looks very promising, addresses the issues present on both clip and screw type stabilizers.

Do they come pre-band-aided? :thumb:

Most likely, but that's because I don't recall any other source of clear stabilizers other than those and the ones Zeal is planning, which of course haven't been made yet.

Just saw those on massdrop and got excited. Then I read bad things about it and followed the trail to here.
Then I discovered this was cherry and PCB only.
I cry.
No love for hand wired projects with simple costar plates.
I'm fine with white ones too, but nobody outside of taobao sells them, and I don't know their quality.
Anyone point me in the right direction? Or help me beg for plate version?
I only have a washable keyboard.

The ones on Massdrop do look like the poorly made ones on Taobao. Seeing the stabilizer pull all the way up and not fall down makes me cringe. :/

No comment on pricing yet. The process to make my stabilizers isn't a simple one, is all I can say. Remember, it addresses issues present on clip in and screw in type stabilizers.

Won't be showing the render yet, but will in the future.

Packs will most likely be sold as follows:

7x 2u
1x 6.25u
1x 7u wire

All wires 24k gold plated.

Total 8 sets of stabilizer housing & inserts, 7x 2u wires, 1x 6.25u wire, 1x 7u wire.

Thank you for the feedback Zeal, I think the information is more than enough for now; besides, being aware that the rumors at MD about your pricing are just that is also good. I will certainly wait for yours any time. PCB mount clear ones with screws and pre-clipped stabilizers will be the best ones.

It'd be cool to see 6u added to that list given that GMK are making 6u spacebars now and EnjoyPBT already makes them.

Regardless I'm looking forward to these ;D

6u is definitely possible, but only a very small fraction of users would use 6u off centered spacebars.

Gonna be at least 2 months as the molds take 50 days.

I'd imagine Zeal will need to check the stabs after the molds are done before production so that will be another couple of weeks at minimum.

Still waiting on the moulds to finish. These moulds aren't CNC'd, but rather made via EDM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_discharge_machining

Zeal mentioned elsewhere that there will be 3 new projects and R4 zealios launching in August. Have to assume these are one of the projects, along with the RGB 60% he mentioned and probably his version of the QMX clips.

When in August is anyone's guess.

I've got most of the available 1.8mm colour variants in stock. Don't really have plans on stocking stock Gaterons for now, as many other vendors already do.

A remade version won't, but I'm securing a last batch of NOS Aristotles as we speak...

Any idea when they might be available to purchase? I keep hearing great things about Aristotles and keep having an urge to try them!

It's only great in Zealio housings. :P

Will announce when I get Aristotles in.

Good thing I bought plenty of Zealios in the last GB!

BTW, your shipping is AMAZING! I really don't mind paying extra for it because I know for a fact that it will be here the next day. I absolutely LOVE it! I just wish you had more LED colors and some Gateron Greens in stock right now...

Thanks! :D I also love overnight express deliveries...I get spoiled when I use it to import stuff haha.

I've got most of the available 1.8mm colour variants in stock. Don't really have plans on stocking stock Gaterons for now, as many other vendors already do.

It is just amazing, I have ordered from you 3 times so far and it has already spoiled me so much that watching my keycap pullers shipping from Massdrop is driving me up the wall!

I looked for LEDs last week when I ordered some stabs and you were out of a lot then. I may have been looking at the wrong sizes too though, it was late at night and I was tired so my memory is foggy!

A lot of places do stock them but they are almost always out of the clear top green and blues. OriginativeCo has blues but no greens and 1up has the milky Gaterons in green and blue but they are out of stock of everything with clear tops or I would order from them. The only place that has them in stock is Winkeyless. I am just wanting you to carry them so I can have everything in one place!

Are there any other places that are in NA that stock the clear top Gaterons? I am fairly new so I am unfamiliar with all the different vendors.

I have had a great experience with SwitchTop.co for small, misc orders of switches and stabs. Its also nice that they stock alu feet.

Thanks for the heads up! That may be where I end up buying from unless I end up buying a numpad from winkeyless this coming up month (which I very well do!). Thank you for the link, this will come in handy in the future!

I'd be interested in picking up 6-8 sets.
