"Sticky" alt key, would be pressed down sometime.
« on: Sat, 04 October 2014, 02:16:41 »
Hello, seems like there's something wrong with my Filco. I've started noticing it about a month or two ago.

Sometimes I would press other keys, and it would act as if one of the ALT key is held down, despite not touching it at all.

My filco is unmodded, and in a plastic case, so I'm not sure what could be the problem. Perhaps it is a computer problem?

I wish there was a good way to troubleshoot this. Has anyone had the same problem before with a key being held down without you actually touching it?

Not sure what to do!

How old is the board?

I'm sure some of the regulars of making stuff together could help you better, but why not take off the caps on and around the key to see if anything is interfering (unlikely, but easy to do).

It's a Filco MJ2 TKL from 2011. I've been using it daily, and good idea, I'll give that a try, but I doubt it's an accidental key press, due to the fact that it remains "held down" unless I press something else.

For example, if I wanted to press S, I would press S, and realize that S was not being pressed, and instead Alt+S is pressed, then afterwards the Alt key returns to normal in the software. It's strange D:

Have you tried desoldering the switch?

Keyboard has never been taken apart before; not too keen on desoldering it yet.

Upon more testing, it appears to be only the LEFT alt that has the "held down" key problem, and it's pretty frequent, maybe once every 10 minutes.

I have also removed the keycaps so there is no way for me to press it accidentally.

Are Cherry switches known to occasionally break like this, and have false/unintended presses?

I have the EXACT same problem on my Filco Majestouch 2 (except it's the 104-key). When it starts "ghosting" the left-alt, I have to tap the left-alt once or twice, then it goes away. This makes me wonder if it's some kind of circuity issue. It's a shame because I bought 2 replacement Filcos, but the keys feel different on both (but they don't have the ghost "alt" problem).
