Backstory

WoB Icon Kit ran initially in 2016, this is one kit a lot of people, including myself, have been waiting for to be ran again. Extension/Compatibility kits are in right now, so why not give it a go?
GMK WoB is more or less readily available through multiple vendors, but the fully fledged WoB base kits all feature text+icon mods. As some have come to know about me, I live and die by icon mods - this is a must have for me, and I assume many of you as well! BoW has also been added due to the huge surge of available BoW (CR+WS1) alternatives lacking icon mods, such as Minimal. It may also serve well as accent keys.

It features support for most layouts, omitting the bottom row as the available WoB sets have modern compatibility already. Colors are CR and WS1.
Control is also omitted in icon form, as that would require a bottom row that uses icons to make sense, and Control R3 is featured in the aforementioned WoB kits.

FAQ

# Adding R5 would be a great way to extend the compatibility for OG sets as well!
There is a running IC for R5 WoB compatibility currently ongoing here. To me it would make little sense to increase the price of the kit when there's a project running for this already.

Personally not a fan of icon bottom rows, but second that this kit would make sense with more icons (escape, bottom row, r3 control) - though adding bottom row could add lots of keys and thus raise price.

After feedback and consideration, these two additions are being worked on:
- Windowed caps (stepped and normal)
- BoW alternative (CR on WS1); not sure if separate kit or bundled together (depends on quote and DR on GMK calculation algorithms)

Normally adding more kits might be a bad idea, but in this case, they really help out and support one another (one kit could act as accent kit for the other, and vice versa). I would love to see a separate spacebar kit too if possible (two sets of 6.25U + 7U, one in CR black, one in WS1 white). Would go really well as accent kit.

Newer wob sets use WS1 for legends, but yeah the black color is essentially the same. Legends on jtk wob are a little more of a cream color iirc, Bow, I have no idea.

Hmm, it was difficult. First and foremost I imagine the people actually using a windowed caps are those who are looking for a retro look (not exclusively ofc), and those type of users also tend to go for stepped. Honestly though, it just looks better windowed than the standard caps does IMO. :D

It wouldn't use an Icon, it'd be text. The esc icon is IMO very ugly, and most people prefer to use text esc even though an icon esc might've been included in their kit.

100%. Please make a separate spacebar kit happened. I'm a big fan of 7U, but its okay to include 6.25U as well. I think now with just these small additions, they can be used as both extension kit and add on kit to pretty much any set out there, because black and white accents go well with everything. Huge plus for regular esc. I agree icon esc looks very ugly.

I am not a pretty man, that's for sure. 

These are classic icon mods though, not to be confused with the inclusion of the odd "shape" icons that have been included with many recent group buys. Those kinda ruin a set imo.

I've thought long and hard about a bottom row, but I really don't see the key increase as a worthwhile addition (that goes for both icon bottom row as well as text bottom row).

The main feedback I am looking at now is Otanis one for adding Esc keys to both kits, but also looking into a separate spacebar kit. Personally I do not see the reason for a spacebar kit as a standalone, but I do see and understand the argument for an Esc. I would love to hear some input on these two specific topics!

Also, it will be interesting to see the quotes for the WoB/BoW kits separately but also together, it's not a terrifying amount of keys and should be fine even combined... We will find out soon.

Love all the changes. Would love to make a few comments regarding the kit configuration (esc/bottom row icon mods/spacebar/etc.)

1) I think a regular esc is favored over icon esc regardless of what type in almost any case. It's more standard, and goes well with everything.

2) Same thing goes for the full icon mods bottom row. Nice to have, but once you start adding full icon support for bottom row, that's like 12 keys per kit we're talking about (both standard and tsangan support). Simply just not feasible for a small icon mods extension kit. Plus I think most people would rather prefer icon mods + text mods bottom row. Janglad did not replace the bottom row in his base kit for Modern Dolch with full icon mods for a reason.

3) I think a separate spacebar kit is nice. It enables the full accent combo potential. It works very nicely for people who only have either BoW or WoB set and want the full accent (esc, enter, space) combo. Having it as a separate kit would not put any financial strain on the main kit. As far as I know, separate spacebar kit has never struggled in the past, and the price should be relatively very affordable (ballparking around $20) so MOQ should be a breeze.

Anyways, thank you Mr. Emir for putting everything under consideration. Doing the god's work for us peasants...

I don't mind adding 6u spacebars, the grand total would only be 6 spacebars in the kit anyway - which shouldn't be all too expensive (even though a lot of OG sets feature 6u space).
I imagine some people getting the spacebar kit just to replace their existing, shiny one as well, as the spacebar is likely the key which suffers the most from use.

I'm all for offering it as a kit, if it makes it it makes it - if it doesn't then welp. I just need to doublecheck with vendors to see what refunds is like these days for failed kits, as IIRC paypal has been doing some shenanigans (idk if it's in affect, if it was but was revised, or what's going on...). I imagine no vendor would want to run a kit they don't really believe in just to run it.

Heyo! Sorry to say, I went with WS1 which I believe is the most popular BoW currently, with over 1000 kits in circulation. I believe the modern white right now is ws1, so I catered to that. Sorry!

Main reason I'm against combined is I didn't get GMK Minimal for the reason of text only mods and I'd have to get it otherwise.

I own GMK Barebones Stormtrooper and that doesn't use WS1 for the white so I wouldn't want to get the white ones in a combined kit as they wouldn't be useful.

Thanks for the update Mr. Emir. WoB Hiragana is a 60% (niche) Hiragana (niche) set. Its a very niche within niche set! WoB extension kit is supposed to go with and support the full WoB set. Very different market and different target audience. Pricing for combined kit is very attractive, and I don't see a reason to split into separate kit. I think a combined kit is a right move. Very nice!

Personally, if they run at the same time, the only way I'm picking this set up vs WoB Hiragana is if you separate kits and the WoB is far cheaper.  Otherwise, I'd assume get bottom row icons and the Hiragana alphas along with it.

I'm personally more interested in the BoW mods. So if this didn't run then it wouldn't be possible to get BoW icon mods. Like the others have said, I would run with the combined set. If anyone doesn't want their extra BoW set I can take it off their hands

I know this might not be feasible, BUT... I'll just get it off my chest.

The concept is great, but there aren't enough icon keycaps. Ideally (IMHO, YMMV, WDIKAA), all non-alphas in a base kit should be present: that means the bottom row mods, the uppper half of the nav cluster and the Esc key should be present as well (OTOH, space bars, arrows and the F1..F12 keys can be ignored safely); Num Lock and Enter from the numpad as well.

Imagine any of those larger kits with several sets of alphas. Get a base kit, get the alternate alphas... use the "base" alphas with a "mods!" kit, like what this one could be.


Also, N9/U9. Because obviously.

Secondly this contradicts your original intention of "extension kit" whereas you want buyers to use this in conjunction with other readily available set: you introduce a not so frequently use duplicate.

Between point 1 to 2 to 3, my chance of seeing this kit as anything useful cuts down to about 20-30%. It is an extension that doesnt really extend the flexibility of cap choice, color mixing, or extra key usage. I barely browse GH these days so my apology for the late critique, didnt really change anything. I wish you a successful gb so we can get maybe round 2 or round 3 of a true extension kit in the near future.

Thank you for taking the time to note down your thoughts! Very well written feedback and I do agree, but I feel that you slightly misunderstand the point of this kit.
This kit is for one simple reason, to provide icon modifiers for WoB and BoW. This is a spin off of the kit that ran in 2016, that a lot of people missed and have been hunting - this is just a rerun with extended and modernized layout.

It's pretty simple - you have WoB and want to use Icon mods, but none of the frequently in stock WoB sets feature icon mods (except candykeys, but that base is very limited). This allows, at a pretty cheap price, for you to use icon mods with those. Minimal sold over 1k sets, so I think a fair few would care for icon mods for BoW as well (as voiced here and in other channels). Combining these may seem dumb, but it allows for a better price as well as accenting.

It was a difficult decision, but I still believe it was the right one. If I put myself in consumer shoes (well, I am a consumer and I want this), I would be willing to pay the kit price even if I only wanted one, which is ultimately why I decided to combine these.

I think OP mainly wanted this to work for WoB & BoW. Not a modifier ext. kit to be used to mix and match for the large range of GMK colors. 

There are many nice ways to use the kit. The "extra" Esc key can work well, as a accent for people with only one set of WoB or BoW.

The combined price just makes it alot cheaper in the end for everybody. Ex. Even though if you are only in need of WoB Icons. You can share the kit with a colleague etc.
You both end up getting a single colorway kit price much cheaper in the end ;)

My level of kit usefulness combining WoB & BoW is now at 97% ^-^

I understand what you mean, but looking at the full picture it's really the only way that makes sense to me, MOQ-hitting wise and price wise.

Combining allows me to aim for higher MOQ quote, which makes it cheaper overall. You are losing out on ~13 euro by buying combined. With that info at hand, I hope you can reconsider.

Quote is based on 250 MOQ, which is a stretch - but I wanted to offer attractive pricing so we took the risk. If it hits 500 (highly unlikely I think...) I will definitely look to add keys!

Stock colors are 150 MOQ for GMK to make, but they quote for 250 and 500 too, at cheaper prices. Set will get made at 150, but we based pricing expecting to sell 250, this allows us to offer it at a better price.

A risky gamble, but I think 250 is not unreasonable for this!
