HHKB Meta Key

I'm new to the HHKB and really like the layout. I am a Debian/i3wm user and wanted to know without switch from the default HHKB layout, is it possible to use the default meta key. Or do you have to modify the layout using the dip switches to use the super key?

I know similar questions have been asked but they all somewhat lead to switching the layout.

"lite Ext. Mode" (SW 1 ON, SW 2 OFF) does not change the layout but will turn the Meta keys into Win keys.
