[GB] ADK18 Numpad - Shipping now! Invoices out.
« on: Mon, 16 September 2019, 14:02:08 »
Information in the IC ------> https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=101963.0

Top mount, alps compatible AEK curve themed numpad.

$75/kit, shipping will be invoiced separately. 50 spots, 4 colors, 2 plate types. The price was a little higher than originally quoted in the IC post because I didn't realize how expensive beige filament is compared to translucent. If you're wanting an ADK64 to go with this, participating in this GB will get you a spot in the redesigned ADK64 I plan to run after my other GB is finished.

Timeline:

Invoices paid by Monday Sept 23
Place PCB order Monday Sept 23
Begin Printing Monday Sept 23

Extending GB time to Sept. 30
PCB lead time is 3 weeks, printing 50 Cases should take about the same time. Add a week for shipping.
Shipping to you around Oct. 28

Entry Form: [OPENS 8:30 AM PST SEPT 17]

Put yourself down for a glow in the dark case + a whacky plate and send me an email. I'll do just a PCB for sure since that's the MOQ item.

Small timeline change - I'm keeping this open another week so we can encompass a payday and get some more numbers for an MOQ break.

Did I not make the cut? I put in an entry in the GB form but did not receive an invoice yet.

I extended the GB for another week, so I'll be invoicing next weekend. You're in there.

The pcb does support 5x4 1u slots, Alps/Mx, has underglow and a speaker breakout. Considering adding an encoder footprint in the top left corner if there is interest.

i'd be good with that. wanted to play with one of those anyway. please use EC11 as it seems like a common component. i know of at least 2 other makers that use them.

i'm planning on using this as a number pad but would also use it as a test bed for different QMK features/configurations.

VIA isn’t accepting new boards, so... probably not, no???

VIA, was worth a shot. Thought it was more in the QMK configuration (whether VIA would support it or not) then what was built into the app, but truthfully, i haven't looked into it very much.

I think it would be great to have a small/lower cost board/kit that supported VIA just to get exposure for VIA. It seems like a really great concept, but i haven't had any compatible hardware yet. Personally, I don't have any trouble working in the code, but i know that's an issue for many. @Wilba, @upas

There's stuff you need to do in QMK to make a board possible to implement in VIA, but then there's work in VIA that needs to be done to recognize a board that is plugged in. Folks working on VIA have plans to make that easier and more straightforward, but aren't accepting new boards for the current implementation because they want to overhaul it before opening it up (so a bunch of currently-supported boards may also need some QMK updates to get VIA support again after those updates happen). Huge post on it in the readme for the repo.

Yeah, i guess that makes things a little more difficult having to be identified in both places, bit it makes sense.

Seems like you've worked out the details already (and this PCB may be more feature rich), but the XD24/cospad has a perforated bottom row that can be removed with hacksaw to make a perfectly functioning 5x4.

Even having one though, I'm getting in on this.

Is this going to change the specs for the case and PCB, overall costs, and timeline for delivery? From a project management perspective, scope, cost, and schedule are all changing, and makes me wonder if this GB needs to be re-launched once the open items have been addressed and decided upon.

I have several revisions for the pcb, all verified working. The final order for the pcbs will be placed once the GB closes, hence the “if there is interest part”. The encoder used will be EC11, and it’s just a footprint on the pcb, so doesn’t change anything price/timeline wise. Just thought I’d clear that out.

Just spoke with nachie, and rotary support is already onboard. I'm going to update my spec list on the post. Sorry for the confusion everyone. GB proceeds as planned, with rotary support.

Well, I plan to run it as soon as the PLA75 is fulfilled, but that may land on a very inconvenient time in regards to school. Let's say late December to be safe.

There are a couple stragglers on invoices that I just sent a reminder to. Please get those paid.

Filament is on the way. Shoutout to mkultra.click for proxying me some filaments that don't ship to Canada from the manufacturers.

Getting test plates cut from FR4 at the university this week (as my protos were printed). I expect no issues with this, I just want to be sure. Plates are made fast ship with DHL so they will not hold up the fulfillment if they need a day of tweaks.

Nachie says the PCBs are done, so when China gets off holidays they will be shipped to him for assembly. I will be sending the finished cases and plates to him in the US so everyone can get cheap domestic shipping, as I am up in the great white north.

So yeah, full steam ahead, everything is looking good. Get those invoices paid.

PCBs are with nachie. I've got all the translucent cases done. Grey and Beige filament still in transit, and I was shipped a glow in the dark filament that was all brittle and not sealed, so I'm getting that replaced ASAP.

So, the biggest complaint about the ADK64 was the layer stepping on the curve. I listened, and did some figuring to get it smoother - I think everyone is going to be really happy with the quality on the ADK18 ;) The edges are MUCH nicer.

ADK18 on the left, ADK64 on the right.

Yes. I had originally planned to ship these from Canada, but nachie has offered to the the distribution, so I'll be sending all the cases down to him, as most participants are in the US, so shipping for them will be much cheaper.

I'm aiming to have the box in the mail to him by the 25th, and he will distribute the week after. That's when you should expect a shipping invoice.

Almost done case production. Everything is coming out beautifully. Been slacking on getting the plates ordered, so I'll do that when exams let up later this week. These should be heading over to nachie for distribution to customers in less than 2 weeks :D

Also, those ones on the right that are standing up is how I print the tops to get them so smooth. The center column is all support material, but its worth it for the refined curve.

I've got a few extra PCBs, DM me if you're interested in getting a kit!

Just giving a small weekly update! Plates are being made now, they should be with me next week. All cases are done printing, I'm just slowly adding the inserts. Nachie is well underway with the pcbs (hand assembly, he's a trooper), so we are on track, and all is well!

Happy Monday, realized I forgot to print the glow in the dark case (and a few extras for latecomers/cancelled and re-picked-up orders) - did a nozzle swap, and in the process I ruined my printer's calibration, so I'll need a few days to get that sorted between staying afloat in school. Plates are taking their sweet time from the manufacturer anyways, so this shouldn't translate into an actual delay.

Nachie has got all his PCBs done, so I expect to ship everything to him before Nov 8, add a week for intl shipping, which means he'll start getting them to your right around mid November. My apologies for the timeline creep, but at least its only a week or two ;)

Replacement translucent cases for those who ordered glow in the dark finish printing today. Plates to arrive at my place on Nov. 5, so I plan to have everything ready to box up and ship to Nachie for this week.

Just a little housekeeping, the tabs on the bottom housing (see attached image) are a little fragile, and are possible to snap off. If this happens, do not fret, as they have no structural significance to the assembled case, they just help with alignment. I snapped all 8 of them off on a test case for sheets and googles and it assembles and aligns perfectly, as the actual positioning is done by the grooves in the top case.

Tl;dr, don't worry if those little cylinders come off.

So yeah. Let's say the cases get to Nachie on Nov 14, then he's just gotta pack everything up and send it to y'all. Quick payment of shipping invoices will make everything go smoothly, so please be fast one getting those in.
