Design

TLDR: Pretty 60% keyboard with through-hole components on the sides.

I love the through-hole keyboards out there but I wanted one with a metal housing. So, I employed Jae of Prototypist (logistics and fulfillment), James of Alchemist Keyboards (housing design), and Yiancar (PCB design) to make my idea into a reality. To give it’s own flavor and to give a better view of the components, the components were split to the sides of the keyboard. The relatively high typing angle was also chosen to increase the visibility of the components. Even though 65% is my favorite layout by far, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to match the symmetry of the housing with the symmetry of the 60% layout. Because the focus of the keyboard is the side partitions, the rest of the design was kept relatively simple.

The pinout on the right side is compatible with OLED. However, it wouldn't fit without taking off the right acrylic cover. Also, the OLED functionality has not been programmed into the firmware.

could you provide the sizing layout for the keycaps required as the some of the keycaps in the renders & images provided seem smaller than 1u.

There you go. The size has been labeled on the top right corner of the keycaps and any keys without a label is 1u. But for any layout, this GB or other, you can safely assume there will be no keycaps smaller than 1u. That would mean that the cap would be smaller than a switch which would make that cap impossible to mount.

Extra PCBs only have the USB connector and the LEDs presoldered and does not include extra through-hole components. I have modified the original post to reflect this.

I'm sad the argyle pattern was removed from the PCB.  I love that kind of detail on PCBs that set it apart and make it unique.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get diodes like in the original renders that have blue on them?  It would be cool to have something blue like that, but I'm pretty sure the only components like that are resistors, right?

It was a decision that could have gone either way really. My plan is to use clear sticker paper that you can print on with a regular inkjet or laser printer to print out designs that would match the keycap I am using and stick it on the bottom corners of the PCB. You can easily find these on Amazon.

Okay, I checked and it looks like the only thing available is the standard brown/black.  I suppose I could paint them!  You'd just have to be careful to mark polarity :)

The board is currently in QC stage at Prototypist, but there is still a mountain of work to do (program each PCB and count out and package all PCB components).
