I saw an owl on the way home.

It was sitting on a street sign looking the other way.

Then it took off and I panicked, but it was only chasing a flying insect, and landed back on the street sign afterwards.

I took some pictures, but it was already dark and the flash lit up the street sign and reflected the crap out of anything else in the picture.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The above happened on Tuesday.

Wednesday night I saw what might have been the same owl perched on the same street sign looking at the same tree.

It flew off again, but didn't fly back this time.

Last night (Thursday) I saw it again, but time time it was perched on the power line crossing the road above the street sign.  Looking around I saw a second one on another nearby power line.

I didn't break my finger, there is just a huge gash on my hand. But yeah, I really need to stop injuring myself.

Removed the keys from the hhkb and cleaned underneath.

Also cleaned the keycaps before putting them back on the board. Not a real bath but with ESD screen cleaning wipes.

Brought the pop of color back to my white keys!

Started to convert my music collection to 320kb/s MP3s, because my current setup and ears are too good for 128kb/s MP3 or worse 32kb/s WMA from times, when I didn't have enough HDD capacity and bandwidth. Good news, I'm enjoying some albums once again. Bad news, other albums were awfully mastered in the first place (like horrible bass on the Wishsides collection by Nightwish).

Oooof.  That's just brutal.  :P  I've got a song that's probably around 32kbps because it was so long that it had to be ****ty to keep the file size reasonable.  It's quite unfortunate...

Glad to hear you're upgrading though, the jump to 320 is fairly significant.   :thumb:

Don't get me wrong, I love FLAC and use it all the time, but in truth it's very difficult to tell the difference between FLAC and 320.  I use it more for archiving purposes than a legitimate sound quality purpose.

That said, if you've ABXed FLAC and 320 and can tell the difference with significant results then more power to ya.   :thumb:

My colleagues would carpet bomb anyone who says that it is hard to tell the difference between FLAC and mp3, even 320.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I have ABXed FLAC and 320 and could not tell the difference with any statistical significance.  Have your colleagues done the same?  I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they have.  In that case, I'm impressed.  Or maybe I just have bad ears, but I don't have any reason to believe that.  Please forgive me, iri!   :-*

Oooh, great point actually.  At the time I was running into HD280 Pros, which might not have given the clarity needed to tell the difference.  I shall have to try it again with the HE 400s and see if that shows a difference.  Consider this my "What will you do tomorrow" post.  :)

Actually, if you can use only something like laptop built-in speakers or an old $10 headset, 32kb/s WMA is barely distinguishable from 128 kb/s MP3—and the file size is smaller by a huge margin. I made these in times, when I had only a 40GB HDD... now, my whole collection takes like 80 GB of space in the middle of conversion to 320kb/s MP3.

Speaking of that, I'd have to get a new storage, if I wanted to go lossless, but the difference in music enjoyment would be negligible; certain aspects of modern mastering are often a much bigger issue that can't be easily fixed.

If I wanted to go full audiophile, I'd start a vinyl collection. I'll probably raid that great local thrift store with rare rock LPs anyway.

Rowdy's owl spotting thread.

Make it happen.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

LOL I had a lift home Friday - no owls.
