A couple of fun updates to share...

Alpine Winter is featured on KeyChatter! Thanks, livingspeedbump! Check it out.

Major milestone update: We have met or exceeded the 50% mark for all three MOQs! That means that in less than two days' time, we're already halfway there. We are also well past the halfway marks for all three spacebar add-on packs (60-80%), and the novelty pack has blown past MOQ at 144%.

Response for add-on blanks has been solid. I have added totals tracking for blanks to the status page. I have to enter these manually, so don't expect to see new orders right away.

Oh sure, your GB gets mentioned but mine doesn't.   >:D

Just kidding.  I'm already way post my MOQ and yours still needs a little love.   :p

But in all seriousness, if your GB doesn't pass I'm going to start cracking skulls.

I'm zero worried at this point, so far signups have been waaaay higher than I expected, and I've got a longer deadline than your buy.

I have a little question about blanks.
All combinations of these colors sizes and rows has individual MOQ?

Yes, 25 each. But I'm going to try really hard to see that they get made.

Guys, I'm super-excited to show off a pair of really awesome 3D renders from new Geekhack member thesiscamper:

You may have seen some of thesiscamper's work in his Joker/Eva IC thread. As soon as I saw his keyboard renders I knew I had to have some for Alpine Winter!

Be sure to view these renders full-size and check out the extreme detail. And if you need any 3D work done, I highly recommend him. He's friendly and courteous, and his prices are very fair.

How thick are these? I'd be interested in them for casting purposes...

It's Signature Plastics DCS, so not very thick.

7-bit keeps threatening an SA-like Alps keycap buy. So watch for that in the 2020s!

Talk is cheap, especially coming from 7-bit..lol

7bit is slow but he releases :)

@njbair: Which Alps mount will SP use as the standard for molding the keycap stems to fit Alps-mount switches? The reason I ask is that I ran into some issues fitting caps from some vintage boards into mounts on Matias switches. The caps would appear to fit, but in some cases the stem was slightly too large for the mount, which apparently caused enough expansion to cause the switch to bind.

SP is not making any new tooling for this set, so fitment should be the same as their existing Alps caps. I have some DSA Alps PBTs from an Infinity kit and they are tight in Matias switches, but DSA are always tight since they were designed for industrial applications.

I've got Badwrench's mods coming in the mail this week, so I'll be able to try out DCS Alps caps on Matias switches. I'll get back to you then.

I forgot, I actually bought an Alps keyboard from the classifieds last week, and it came with a DCS "GEEK HACK" keycap. It arrived this morning, and I was able to check the fitment with a Matias switch on my Infinity keyboard. I'd say it's just right; not to loose, not too tight.

Alps caps are a bit harder to remove in general versus MX. I find the best way to get them off is to rock them side to side while applying slight upward force. Using a long-handled key puller, this motion looks like moving from left to right over and over again on an Atari joystick, if that helps illustrate what I mean.

Side to side rocking is a good way to break the cap stem.  It's harder, but a straight pull is what I recommend.  Only rock if you have to.

My recommendation is to take a spare switch or old board and mount each cap once.  It removes any flashing.  I found that after being mounted once and removed, the caps were much easier to mount and remove.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

Side to side rocking is a good way to break the cap stem.  It's harder, but a straight pull is what I recommend.  Only rock if you have to.

Just joined for a set + some sadsters.
The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's surface area (41,285 kmē), making it one of the most alpine countries. Orders have slowed down a bit after the weekend (as was expected), but we are looking good for 5 days into the buy. Were 84% of the way to 50 sets, and 66% of the way to 100!

The interest in ala carte blanks has been a little lower than I had expected...We've still got a long while until the buy closes on October 24, so hopefully the orders for blanks pick up so that everybody can get what they want. I'm working with Signature Plastics to figure out the best way to make that happen.

I'm thinking the blanks are a bit lower because the base set does so much.

I'd buy some blanks, but since the base will support any layout I can imagine I'd want...I haven't.

Kind of a shame there are no 2u keys, otherwise there could have been more interest in blanks from the Planck/Atomic crowd.

Trouble is, each size/row/color combination is its own MOQ, so adding one keycap size is actually 8 more line items.

I just received pricing info for blanks. MOQ is still 25 per key color/size/profile, and pricing is as follows:

  • 1U: $0.73/ea.
  • 1.25U: $0.75/ea.
  • 1.5U: $1.49/ea.

Much cheaper than I had figured! So if you were on the fence about blanks, hopefully this will help you decide.

Hey njbair, I just submitted a new form for:

3 Blue 1U, Row 2
4 Blue 1U, Row 4

I hope that didn't complicate anything.

In case anyone is wondering why I ordered 26 blanks (which is probably nobody), I plan on using the blanks to get full coverage on a TKL keyboard. It only costs $19 more and I could have saved a little more since the kit already comes with two row 4 1u blanks. Yes, I know this is supposed to be a 60% GB but I like to be creative. :D

I might order 8 row 1 grey blanks for the F1-F4 and F9-F12 keys to see if I like one looks over the other - but that depends on if njbair will hate me for submitting yet another order form.  :))

I was actually wondering what poeple are going to be doing with all the blanks. I didn't realize you could specify the row you wanted. Even so, there are some sizes which aren't available, so I assume you are just going to use regular keys with legends for those.

The escape, F keys, arrow keys, insert, delete, print screen, etc will all be blanks while the alphas and modifiers will be the regular keys from the gb. Actually now that I think about it I'll probably put a sadster on the escape key :)

If I remember correctly, SP does not have the SA + Alps tooling.
