Hi friends, welcome to the Interest Check for the next keyboard in the HEX series, the HEX.6C.
The 6C is our attempt at filling a very distinct void in the custom community, the full-size layout.
Prototype Images
[attachimg=16][attachimg=17]
When we were conceptualizing our next product after we ran 3C, we decided to provide the community with something that had been missing for quite a while, A Custom full-size Keyboard.
As you can see, the renders are of a southpaw full-size, as I personally feel that it is the most convenient full-size should the user put in the effort to get used to the left handed numpad,
but we're also thinking of just doing the traditional full-size layout. Do help us solve this dilemma by filling in the IC form :)
[attachimg=15]
There had been some custom full-sizes in the past. However, the prices and the limited quantities available meant that there wasn't really a widely available
custom full-size solution in the market. This is the reason we decided to bring this layout and design to the IC stage instead of more popular(as of recent times) 65% or TKL layouts.
However we're still evaluating interest in this board and we might end up bringing something else into IC if this doesn't do as well as we want it to.
[attachimg=8]
Our plate mounting this time is a little different compared to the one we had in the 3C (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=104597.0), where we just isolated each mounting point. Since we're going with a more "traditional" gasket-type mount, we opted to fully gasket mount our plate with a giant rubber band completely wrapping the plate. Ensuring that the plate will be COMPLETELY isolated from the top and bottom case, making zero contact with metal during usage.
As for the material for the gasket, we're thinking either silicone or poron as of now.
UPDATE: We've finalized our gasket implementation. Here is the new exploded view of how it would look like
[attach=18]
We're thinking of offering Brass Knobs as
The default aluminum knob will be anodized to match your case colour. of choice.
[attachimg=9]
As for plates we're looking at offering two layout options: Southpaw Standard and Southpaw Mirrored

Thanks man, that was my intention when we conceptualized this as well :)
-
nice
-
If you can keep it close to the estimated pricing, count me in! I'm not a huge fan of full sized boards, but the fact full size customs are so few & far between + this being southpaw sells me on it. GL with this guys!
-
This looks really great, definitely a great work keyboard.
-
100% in for a left numpad.
If Polycarb version is made I hope I can put my hand on it.
Realy great work, simple aesthetics. On the quality side I will see it with my Hec3C.
You have all my support!
-
Filled out form! Would you consider a WKL top?
-
Here's what I think:
- Southpaw numpad is a must for me (I'm left-handed and have been craving something like this for a long time)
- F13 seems a bit unnecessary to me. It makes the first row look too busy
- Please consider a winkeyless option
-
Interested because southpaw, looks great!
-
NICE time to find space on my table for this
-
Filled in the IC form
- Please consider adding an option for a WKL bottom row

WKL added, I might have forgetten to add that detail in there
I'll discuss with my partner regarding the F13 key

Exactly. Also, my coworker insists on RGB :D Is that something you'd consider?
-
Not my size but maybe I'm going to build one for my friend, so I'm interested! I can't understand how you can find the F13 key "unnecessary", I mean... it's a full-size? It has a ton of unnecessary keys? I think it looks much better with the F13, personally.
-
If WKL is supported, then I'm definitely interested
-
Another thing, I have some Cherry OG keysets that I use with 84-key boards, so that means the numpad caps never see the light of day. Being able to put the WHOLE OG keyset into use in a southpaw form factor is what dreams are made of <3
-
Southpaw offered I'm totally in. Thanks for offering this!

We're still actively designing the PCB. If its something we can do at a good enough price point, I don't see the downsides of it :)

Just spitballing an idea, but if you separate the plate for the numpad from the rest, you can achieve a "southpaw" numpad and "normal" numpad just by flipping that plate over (PCB might be a bit swiss). I would also like to see options for 1us where 2us exist on the numpad.
Other than that, it's a welcome option that really isn't paid any attention too. And that price tag looks good, but I hesitant that it might be un-achievable.
6.9 degree typing angle
nice

That's a pretty interesting take on the numpad plate. I'll definitely take it into consideration and think about how to make sure that doesn't affect anything in the board. It could open up the possibility of us offering both left and right sided top pieces and pcbs.
As for the 1u where 2u's are, we'll implement that when we design the PCB.
-
Nice typing angle
-
This is perfect. Glad to see the F13 spot because I have a perfect artisan for it. Need that fullsize keeb in aluminium with left numpad/southpaw. Gonna use for waifu's build.
-
full size keyboard - sign me up. while i fully support the southpaws (they are rare)... please dont neglect us standard 104/108 layout guys. down for at least a couple when you build them
-
Definitely interested in this full size as I need that for work. Southpaw is intriguing. I'm willing to give it a shot.
-
Will the PCB run QMK?
-
IMO Silicon and nitrile are the only relevant proper gasket options. I would ignore poron completely if I were you. Plate design looks pretty good for a change, if there were a fixed tsangan plate would be even more epic.. GLWIC!
-
this is pretty interesting.. hmm nice
-
I need this. Please make it happen lol. Loved it since I saw the first render in yalls discord. The price is incredible too
-
Oh I like this. Big fan of the layout for people who still want numpads.

Yes definitely. I would like to have it ported to VIA as well if possible :)

Point taken! I'll definitely be looking forward to the prototype.
As for the fixed plate, it's highly unlikely that we offer that this round.

Sweet board, always cool seeing custom tenkey boards

Mirror the layout of the numpad so the 2U keys are on the left side and I’m in

With another southpaw board coming out, I hope this can be a traditional numpad styled board!
-
love it but would prefer traditional numpad too
-
Nice I am interested.
-
IMO F13 makes it look too busy and isn't really needed on a fullsize board.
If you can keep it close to your estimated price, I'm definitely interested!
-
As an ‘either way’ sorta guy about F13 seems like it should be a poll.
What if the pcb supported mirrored numpad but the plate didn’t, plate files were made available, the mirrored folks can get their own, and those of us who are the sort to want a spare plate get them from the mirror preference folks who don’t want the stock one? SP-111 did that w the numpad...

Fun to see a full size board. And the price is great! Hopefully you can keep it close to that.
For me, traditional numpad is a must. No interest in a southpaw personally.
I like f13, please keep it.
Carbon fiber plate?
-
Not that familiar with gasket mount. Could it support hot swap?
-
I'm waiting.
-
Interested on behalf of a friend who's wanted a fullsize custom for a while, will prolly build it for him if this happens.
Hoping for non-southpaw options though.

No promises regarding CF plate but the plate files will be released post-gb so feel free to cut your own.

Hahah we've all got that one friend who really must have THAT numpad eh?
Based off community feedback it seems that for now this will be run in the southpaw variant

It could but there might be issues. I still recommend soldering your switches as you'll have a more solid-feeling keyboard.

We've added mirrored numpad and knob support!
I really appreciate this!
Renders look really nice.

This looks really nice and would be super cool at the estimated price point. I don't really need another board right now but this one might be enough to convince me.
-
Interessted, as left handed - vote for traditional :thumb:

With added knob support, will this mean there will be a version w/o knob?

Would consider this as recommendation for a friend, and that means iso support would be greatly appreciated.

I guess it depends on the knob radius, but the pcb can support both a switch and an encoder, so don't worry about it too much.

For those of us that do our own coating, it would even more cool if we could get a raw off-the-mill version that hasn't been coated/anodized. Can't wait either way!

If running, I definitely go with :thumb:

Price is amazing. Southpaw is also +++. Would definitely be in for a polycarb version and PP plate.

Price: 250-300USD for the base kit
How?

I'm hoping no knob is an option. And if all versions absolutely have to come with a knob, I think a better position for it would be the first key on the top left so you can rest your handle on the table while turning the knob. in it's current position you'd have to keep your hand and arm floating above the keyboard the whole time.
apart from the position of the knob, I love everything else about it.

Agreed, if the knob is going to be a fixed option it should be in a better spot. It's awkward to have it in the current place. Your hand would be on top of the numpad and other keys.
-
I'm excited for this to become available, but I have a question about the pcb and some of the features I'd like to see kept in the design.
This is probably an unpopular feature, but are there any plans to support LED lighting for each key and also fro things like Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock?
Knob - I'd prefer if there was an option for no knob/dial. I'd like to see the 4 extra keys on top of the numpad so maybe they could be used for media keys or reprogrammed for other uses.
F13 key - I support the inclusion of this, though I'm curious what people will use it for in maybe executing macros or something.
I'm new to the custom keyboard scene and I really love the southpaw numpad design you've made. I also support the option for an inverted numpad :)
-
Love how this looks, I hope everyone who joins the GB loves it. Unfortunately southpaw numpad is a no bueno for me.
-
I've been waiting for a full keyboard with numpad on the left. Count me in! PM me when this is ready (hopefully the price range still as estimated on the first page).

With regards to the position of the knob, everything is still largely in design phase and things could change. However we made the choice for the knob to be where its at in the current design as we feel that it would be easier to reach without having to move your hands from the main alpha cluster as much.
For those of us that do our own coating, it would even more cool if we could get a raw off-the-mill version that hasn't been coated/anodized. Can't wait either way!

As of right now there's no plans to support RGB or any specific lighting for the keyboard, other than indicator lights for caps, scoll and numlock.
My idea for the knob is for it to be used as a volume wheel, and the top 3 keys to be use as media/macros.

Not a southpaw person so probably out. Good luck with the group buy. Seems like you are filling a definite niche.
-
Hi all, I added a small poll to gather responses for the knob position. Do take your time to consider and fill it out as once this poll is over the position will be FINALIZED :)

I've been severely missing a numpad, but enjoy the space on the right side without it, so a southpaw is right up my alley. Definitely keeping an eye on this as a potential endgame work keyboard.
I love the variety of knob options being offered, and that they'll be low-profile, which is a lot more aesthetic imo.
I've been fantasizing something similar to this board, with the southpaw numpad and rotary encoder above it.
Albeit:
- Given no need for the extra 3 keys above the num-pad (except to show off artisans), it's instead an OLED screen
- Right side is 65/75%, slimming it down a bit, as I never use Insert, Pause, Scroll lock, Prt Screen
- Potentially split
But that's just my fantasy.

Your dream is the Ext65. That was limited to 50 on hand units at 500 usd. I believe three protos were offered in an auction style as full kits and went for nearly 1k.
I currently own a Ducky one, which is 108 and love the 4 extra keys : calculator, volume mute, up and down. The calculator was key to my purchase as I'm an accountant and hate traditional desk calculators (much faster on my numpad). With the rotary encoder I'll have 1 or two keys to figure out ( of the encoder is push sensitive as well, then mute is handled)

southpaw is exactly why i want this. i feel like this layout plus GMK Rudy is my endgame tbh, PLEASE make it.
-
I went with left, assuming southpaw layout. My reasoning is that it would be easier to handle the knob from the side (left lateral), where there are no keycaps or otherwise to interfere. Otherwise I imagine you'd have to use a pincer move.

Ext65 is close, but it has no rotary encoder, nor OLED screen. Nor does it have the F-row which I like, despite only really using f4, f5, f6 and f11 ever.
A calculator button would be useful, however I can map that to another F key, and the rotary encoder should be able to handle volume/mute.

Thanks for your feedback! We've also toyed with the idea of a OLED screen near the rotary encoder, but in an effort to keep its price low we decided on the more economical option as for now. Perhaps in future revisions or a more premium version of this board, you might see the OLED screen make an appearance :)

Why people are so eager to put knobs onto the keyboards?..
Sorry, but this kills it for me.

We feel that rotary encoders add a nice amount of utility to a keyboard, since it can be used to solely control volume and mute/unmute while taking up approx 1u~ of space. Something that you'd normally need 3 keys for. Also in the poll ran in the IC a majority of users felt that the rotary encoder would be a welcome addition to this design :)

I personally love where the knob is currently. Makes the design much more interesting to look at, and I agree that in the long run this is more comfortable then having to reach all the way out to the left of the board. It's a matter of adjusting to muscle memory.
Maybe a taller knob would help mitigate the problem for some folk?
Regardless, this is a must buy for me. Southpawed fullsize with a knob on it? Oh yes please.

make the knob taller won't mitigate the problem because the problem with the current knob position is that you're left hand will be floating above the keyboard. which will get tiring if you're using software where you have to scrub/scroll frequently.
the reason some have suggested it be placed at the left instead is so that your left hand can rest on the table while you use the knob.

I'd rather grab it from the top with the tip of my fingers than hook my shoulder into an awkward angle to wrap around and reach the knob.
I get the argument to have it in the corner, but again i just think the trade-off does not outweight having keys around it.
I guess the compromise would be to make it take up a switch slot and have us choose where to put it, but alas
-
much prefer the current knob position as well. looks much better than the alternative, and grabbing it from above is the best way to use it anyway. Can't wait to see this go into production.

I'm in for 2. Gonna be building a couple for my friends! :thumb: ;D

Been into the idea of left-numpads recently, following.

-
I'm interested. Make a custom piece that could convert a square to circle for the knob, so it can still be flush with the top.
That way, a customer can put it on either side. Sure a simple adjustment on the PCB wouldn't be that hard.
This would also be perfect for people who do not want to use a knob at all. Two birds...
-
I'm so on-board for this keyboard.
I'd rather it be knob-free, but it's not a deal-breaker if this board has a knob. This layout looks perfect for me. I'd use it mostly as a TKL with a bunch of macro keys on the left (for programming in Visual Studio). I also do enough Excel that I'd have the numpad transform into a real numpad occasionally.
EDIT: Please keep F13. I'll make use of every key.
-
I love the idea of a fullsized southpaw and the polycarb version of this looks so good!
-
I want this.. ;D
-
Definitely interested in this one..
-
Been trying to use my numpad with my left hand, found that it's not so bad. So I'm warming up to the idea of a southpaw board.
If you can keep it at the target price of 250-300, with mirrored keypad and knob on left, I'm in.
-
Ticks the right boxes for something I've been looking for (fullsize, southpaw, proper spacing for nav and numpad).
Not keen on the encoder. If it's for volume control, I prefer to use a DAC or amp to control volume rather than the OS for quality reasons. And if it's for something else like searching/scrolling, it's in an awkward place with the hand floating above the number pad for an extended period. The mid-board positioning strikes me as form over function, it looks better there at the expense of long term usability.
Edited for typos

waiting for GB!
-
Not much else to say other than I need this; please let that e-white with rose gold plate come to fruition. :)
-
I am just so excited for this. The price range would be so on the spot as well.
-
Yep, I'm sold on this case. keeping an eye out for this
-
Looks awesome! Not sure about the knob so a knob free option would be great :P
+1
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that is not into that trend.
It’s already full size. Personally it’s cleaner to be knob free. Keep it simple ;)
-
Finalized Price, MOQ, third colour, and plate options :)
We're slated to start GB after 3C fulfillment, hope to see you there :)
-
So what's the results of the knob poll? Has that been finalized as well?

Exciting news, looking forward to the details!

Nice! Any chance we can hear what the board will sound like?
-
Count me in!
When’s GB?
-
Any date and vendor for the gb?
-
Now this is what I've been waiting for.
-
Eagerly waiting!
-
looks great, perfect for work
-
Ok, a full-size board? Finally?! Count me in! Only one question, what the heck is the knob for? Also a suggestion, the teal color is very nice, would love it a bit darker though, like a kind of dark emerald.
-
A full size! I can’t wait. I’m definitely in.
-
have you ordered any protos yet?
-
Confirmed southpaw is a bit of a downer for me, any chance a normal full-size unit would be produced? :(
-
This keyboard checks all the boxes for me!
As a person working (occassionally) with spreadsheets, the numpad is nice to have and the southpaw layout means that I don't have to move my hands from the mouse to they keyboard back and forth.
-

The original post explains that this feedback can be given in the survey...
Personally I am all for southpaw keyboards.

Yep, I submitted my IC form as such. Hoping it pulls through and has a teal option, this would looks stunning.
-
So what's the results of the knob poll? Has that been finalized as well?
We're evaluating that when we get the prototypes in, estimated to be in a few weeks. As of right now the poll is a very very even split.
Any date and vendor for the gb?
Date is not finalized, expect it to be late this month or early next month. We would want to fulfill our existing 3C orders before starting something new. As for vendors, there's only us for now.
Confirmed southpaw is a bit of a downer for me, any chance a normal full-size unit would be produced? :(
For this round, due to us wanting to keep costs low we've opted for one layout, however the future is yet to be decided.
Nice! Any chance we can hear what the board will sound like?
When the protos come in I'll build one and upload the soundtests :)
have you ordered any protos yet?
Yep! We're expecting them to come soon. Once we're satisfied with the final design, then we'll start the gb.
-
Great news, all. Keep up the good work and looking forward to this. :)

Hi all, I've updated the price to local currency!
-
I really love the idea it looks so clean and productive
-
too bad the navy color is removed.
-
I was looking for a good full size. With this price, this might the best. Can you share typing test of this keyboard ?
-
Very interesting offering. Is the GB going to be a raffle or FCFS ?
-
im in...but take your time with the GB cause i just joined the protozoa mysterium gb and im quite broke. hahahaha
-
This looks like a board I can use at work, I'm strongly considering.
Also super interested what comes out of the HEX.50
-
Will this come with south-facing switch orientation?
-
Will this come with south-facing switch orientation?
From what I can tell from proto board pic shared on discord it is south facing. So get your GMKs ready.
-
Super pumped for this.. amazing design, and price!
-
Since the HEX 3C hasn't ship yet I'm guessing this will be in GB in September right ?
-
Will plate and PCB be available for us to buy after GB?
So I'll grab extra during check out.
-
Were any PCB pics ever posted? I can't find any.

Yes during the Group Buy you will be able to buy Extras!

FCFS!
too bad the navy color is removed.
We weren't confident with the Navy we received for 3C, so we would like to take some time to fine tune it before re-releasing the colour

Prototypes building soon!

Depends, right now we're sorting the 3Cs and are almost shipping it out, so the GB could be anytime from now.

I posted some in the discord, do join!

$420 for a full size keyboard is really good value
-
Count me in!!!

Hey Kasterborous,
How many 6.C will be available? will there be any hard cap?
Also, this is a long shot, but i'll ask any way. Will there be a 2nd runs? I feel that this will be gone in 45.2sec. :p
-
Well, I found my potential endgame. All in.

I love the look of a custom full size, good luck with the group buy

How is a higher Minimum Order Quantity a good thing?
Unless you mean Maximum?

That's how I read it as well. Which would mean that Hex uses MOQ to mean Maximum Order Quantity. Which is a bit odd considering most GBs use it to mean Minimum Order Quantity.
-
Great price and MOQ!
-
I love this so much - one of the few GBs I'm ready to hop on right now. Like others have mentioned, MOQ = min or max?

After much internal discussion, we've decided to do something unique with the GB.
After the quantity of 300 is hit, we'll keep the page open for 30 more seconds so people who have slower internet or want to order add-ons can do so without having to rush.
We hope this alleviates some of the stress and urgency when dealing with FCFS Group Buys. Cheers!

SoonTM. Could be next week, or this weekend if everything on our end goes well. We're getting the prototype built right now

I just hope the knob will move to the left side of the board.

Are you worried it's hard to use on the right? Far left seems very far away, and might make the board look unbalanced.

Is the limited polycarbonate version not happening anymore?

Can you share the image of the gasket that to be used? are they off the shelf or proprietary.
If its proprietary do we get extra if extra pcb+plate is purchase?

this is gorgeous! i cant wait to see what this looks like in white with a nice blue set of keycaps and the teal plate. count me in :thumb:

Just theory crafting here since I've never had a keeb with a rotary encoder.
If it was placed on the left corner, you'd have a lot more free space to actually touch and turn the knob. There you could use c. 50% of the circumference of the dial (plus from above). Where it's placed on the renders currently, it looks like you'd kind of have to rely on the 25-ish percent to the "north" where no other keys get in the way. I suppose it also matters how tall the knob actually is. If it's taller than the surrounding caps then it won't matter as much.
It's possible I just have fat fingers
-
I'm in!
-
Oh i'm so in
E-white southpaw full size. I've been waiting for that (lurking)
-
I was on the fence until I saw the numpad layout options and the inclusion of split right shift and split back space 😁😁😁 Full size boards never looked so appealing

We're gonna be updating the thread soon with some changes :) chances are you won't need extras for it
-
Looks so pretty and Im always a fan of full size :) first time seeing the numbers on the left but...I dig it :D
-
This is fantastic! Hope to know more about it soon and would definitely join the group buy!

My wallet is ready for this GB.

Hi all! I've updated the post with our final gasket implementation method :thumb:
I'm also prepping the GB post as we speak :)

Are there any pictures of the bottom or is it just a plain aluminum?

I'm regretting not joining the group buy now. I was concerned about incoming clash flow that worked itself out after all. Will there be extras?

In love with the southpaw with that design. If there are extras how can I be sure to get in on it quick?
