Dodgy's Keycaps
« on: Wed, 16 November 2016, 20:45:02 »
Hey all, I just realized I didn't make a thread on Artisan Services.
I put a site together, and have my first wave of caps available for sale:

http://dodgymk.bigcartel.com/

11/18/16- All orders up until this time have shipped, if you didn't automatically receive an email with your tracking # from paypal, shoot me a PM or email and I'll send it over to you. Thanks!

11/20/16- Had a few more orders trickle in over the weekend, they're going to go out first thing this Monday morning.

10/8/17- New place, new setup, new caps and ideas in the works.

I hope everybody likes them!

Don't worry! I'll be making more of them for the next round.

Definitely expect some more white caps and lighter colors in general for the next round.

I only had one opal available! I was so disappointed that it was the only one out of 6 that made it through QC. I'll be making some more though for sure.

There's still a few caps available on the site, if anyone still wants to get in on something.
And I just I want to just thank everybody for their support- it means a lot to me.  :thumb:

Damn, I was about to pull the trigger until I saw how shipping doubled the price.

Maybe I'll bite next time if I want more than one! (That nebulous Cartel though...)

Any chance you'll be doing one in a white+black swirl colorway? (Similar to Porcelain, Antler)

I actually did a about 6x each of cartel and blanks in a classic marble but they all had errors except for the one posted above- all the stems were messed up. Quite disappointing. I'll most likely be doing more for the next round though, I really loved the way they looked.

I just discovered your caps, and love them! The lichen is great.

And explore Nonsequiturland for a moment, your tag line made me think of this story, with which I became a bit obsessed back when it happened:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2011/dec/13/prolific-egg-thief-700-jailed

It was just such a wonderfully British story.

Wow. That was super interesting. I'll definitely read further into all of this, thanks! I guess I never imagined collecting eggs but I can see where the fascination comes from, so much variety and beauty in them. Those poor golden eagle chicks though :(

Glad you like my caps! There'll be more Lichens in the next round, perhaps a few resembling bird eggs too.

Awesome, I'll keep an eye out for your next round!

For some reason, that story just fascinated me. I guess I can connect with the obsessiveness about a strange hobby more than a little, and the mental image of this  50-year old, repeat-offender ornithologist-thief in tweed balancing on a limb to nick eggs tickled me.

I didn't know the slang meaning until I just looked it up, but there is the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918... And back when I was temporarily insane and considering taking the LSAT, I ran across the random fact that sovereignty claims on islands are partly justified by birds pooping on them. (The islands, not the claims.)

I've been quiet for a while, learning how to work with CAD software in between a terrible work schedule which is finally over. Since I didn't have time to cast I started working on a cap that I could have CNC machined. I posted about this on Reddit some time ago, but I'd like to keep things relatively up to date here, it's nice to have things cataloged in one place.

Here's a few pictures of the prototypes, one in aluminum and the other in stainless. Some measurements and parts of the design have changed between the two (shine-through holes on both sides now). I've been using them daily for a while now and really enjoy them.
179866-0179868-1179870-2

I'll also use this as a master for my cast double shot caps, the tolerances and overall profile are a lot better than before and the inlay space is larger & deeper.

As for the machined caps, I was thinking it would be cool to have the "inlay" interchangeable so you could really make the cap look any way you want. The inlay I had machined uses an o-ring which holds it in place really nice and snug (and aligned). Right now the red casted inlay sits slightly high above the cap, which isn't desired, but I thought it looked nice so I wanted to post it. I think there's a lot of exciting possibilities for different inlays/inserts... Different metals, wood, stone, casted, etc...

Aside from that, I finally got my hands on a synth, so I've been spending a lot of time working on some ideas for sculpted caps. I really missed sculpting so it's great to be doing it again.

I have about 50 caps that still need to be sanded and polished from a few months ago, hopefully I can get cracking on those in the next few days and maybe run a small sale.

Anyway, I guess my question is- would anyone be interested in this machined cap idea? I'm going to start casting again either way, but doing both wouldn't be too much to take on.
