[IC] GMK Phosphorous — Group Buy is live!

Group buy is LIVE here!

Meine Damen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs, Ladies and Gentlemen...

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to GMK Phosphorous, a set I have been working on for these past few weeks.

History

One day, not long ago, I was browsing RAMA WORKS' website, contemplating the M60-A in Moon, and I took a closer look at their renders. It had a simple grey and blueish-cyan keycap set, which I immediately fancied. Since RAMA and I were DM-ing back and forth about my M60-A Moon pre-order, I asked about the set. Turned out that it was just a render and they suggested I just go make it myself. I started mocking up the set that same evening.

The Moon colour on the M60-A from RAMA WORKS is a cool grey which I really fancy but the icing on the cake was the phosphor filled enamel product code and RAMA logo. These two colours inspired my own colour choices.

224733-1

Objectives

I wanted to make GMK Phosphorous as affordable as possible, while retaining the character of the set I had imagined, hence I dropped the NumPad from the Core kit. I also decided to skip a separate Novelties set, deciding to go down the minimalistic route and include a select few unique keys in the Core kit itself.

Caveats

My inspiration was based solely on the M60-A Moon. Yes, I realise there are similar looking keycap sets out there, "but this one is mine" (as they say, meaning that I did not use them for inspiration). I was actually working on another set (which I put on hold) because I fell in love with this colourway.

220534-2

Huge Hugs

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who helped me with everything from choosing colours, to pointing me in the right direction, to supporting my idea and helping me not give up. In alphabetical order (apart from Yuliia at the top, because she's had to endure a lot of PMs from me!):

  • NecrowomanX
  • Abec13
  • ISO_Returns
  • Janglad
  • Langelandia
  • NecromanX
  • Oblotzky
  • Oldcat
  • RAMA WORKS
  • Ryan

I humbly apologise if I forgot to include anyone!

I'm liking this a lot! Sucker for dark themes and the light blue shade is very nice.

However, I've got this nagging feeling I have too many GMK sets... Hopefully it goes away soon :D

Is there a reason you wouldn't just do N9 and N5? Seems really similar to the pantones you've chosen.

Also, why use "Num lock", 2 line, when you also use one lines such as "Print", "Lock", "Pause"? I'd change to "Num".
In addition, because you're using icon mods and (hopefully) one line modifiers, I'd also change the icon for divide and multiply on the numpad to the alternate versions.

Edit: also, why did you include a third 1u ISO key? Since you omitted the numrow, it makes no sense. :) Just remove one of the additional iso specific keys to save on the base cost.

Quiet similar the stock keycaps of certain Leopold PD keyboards
Then again, these are PBT Double-shot (better IMO, but harder to produce) and not readily available.

It's fine that it's not N9, but a lot of us have a set with that color. Any way to show the two next to each other? (Does N9 have an approximate Pantone?)

I could ask someone to try to render both colours next to each other, to show the difference. I'll keep this in mind.

This is a very rough estimate of Pantone colours which are "close to" N9, with Cool Gray 11 C for comparison. Do not use this for reference — a good quality photo would be better.

That looks quite good! I did not know that. The legends are more cyanish I believe, but hard to tell. Still, a very nice keycap set.

I told Moridin to consider this. Since this year is 350 anniversary of discovery phosphorus by Hennig Brand in 1669 why not commemorate it (the first element to be discovered that was not known since ancient times). I added 1669 by his initials. Maybe even make H and B blue like "P"

GMK works in RAL colors. When you move to samples I recommend ordering a few candidate RAL chips - https://usa.ral-shop.com/product/ral-p1-sample/

I think that if you do that it should be with 2 extra keys, so you can still have a clean base if you want. Which shouldn't be a huge issue since you left off numpad (thx for that by the way).

What are your thoughts on the base kit only having 65% compatibility(Koyu and M60) with a U80 compatibility kit for TKLs?

Getting colors closer is nice, but TBH if N9/N5 makes this cheaper at a lower MOQ that might make a lot of people happy amidst the current GMK flood.

Also N9 now matches Terminal, Q:01, Skidata, and Nines; you can do lots of interesting color combinations, and having this in N9 would be fun. IMO it would look GREAT with Skidata as a kind of homage to the garish blue case of the original Skidata terminal.

Thanks for all the comments in the IC form — those are invaluable. My biggest regret is NorDEUK because there are currently 7 (seven) people who have declared their intent to purchase it and we would need at least 40, to buy out to an MOQ of 50... 😞

Re 1: I wanted to be as close to RAMA's Cool Gray 10 C and the phosphor filled enamel as possible.
Re 2: Noted.
Re 3: Which key are you referring to exactly? It's probably staring me in the face, but I am apparently blind.

Personal preference i know, but those single line "lock", "print" ect are the reason i ended up selling some of my sets, way uglier than the og way of doing it imo

I have no personal preference either way, since I don’t use TKLs (apart from aesthetics and consistency), so curious what others think. Let me know.

I like the "one word" versions on the 1u keys. But the Caps Lock key might need something more than just "Lock", it looks kind of bare that way.

I like the one line 1U keys personally, but I wouldn't pound the table for it or anything. I do like the idea of custom colors though, N9 is a little dark for me.

Edit: also, why did you include a third 1u ISO key? Since you omitted the numrow, it makes no sense. :) Just remove one of the additional iso specific keys to save on the base cost.

The reason I (and presumably others) like it is because it looks cleaner and therefore I prefer it with icon mod sets. If there are no icon mods, I don't care for it either. Also, it looks cleaner with numpads that don't use sublegends. Aesthetically I see no reason to mix clean elements of a set with cluttered ones.

So for sets with text+icon mods, go for sublegends on the numpad and two line 1u mods, imo anyway.

In any case, mixing both like this set does is a sin in my books. Even if he won't use 'num', at least change the rest lol. Inconsistencies are my biggest gripe.

Is there a reason you wouldn't just do N9 and N5? Seems really similar to the pantones you've chosen.

I already replied in Discord that the Num Lock key was an oversight and it will be changed to Num. 😉 Errare humanum est.

hey, nice set, I'm intrigued.

the 40s kit has a 1.5u return key but its depicted as a 1.25u key (I'm being lazy and not checking if its been mentioned until now).

Either way, having 2x1.25u r3 keys makes this a very attractive kit for me (and other Katana60 owners...

Love the shade of blue, looks soo good against the gray. Big fan of the periodic table phosphorus P alpha as well. It looks awesome on Carbon and I'm sure it'll look similarly good here.

Feels appropriate that we get a Rama cap with this one. Hoping for Moon Gray with blue enamel infil, possibly the periodic table design, although might look a little odd having something that's basically an alpha in the Esc position... I'm sure some awesome ideas for it, can't wait to see more!

It’s supposed to be 1.5u. 😕

I personally like as much text as possible (i.e. Control over Ctrl, Caps Lock over Lock), but everything has to be in one line, as per Emir suggested!

Everything should be on one line now, after the fix. Apart from the novelty “p” key, but I guess that’s understandable.

love the P Novelty Key! Is there a set with all Elements instead of Alphas?

No, sadly. It would probably cost a fortune.

I think I've just fallen in love with yet another set. Thanks for giving me this thing that I never knew that I needed.

It would be prohibitively expensive if someone tried to do it as a doubleshot set from GMK because of all the new molds required, but it would be feasible to do it as a dyesub set.  At that point it's not much different from using a custom font.  It's similar to what was done for XDA Scrabble, but without licensing costs.

Well, all the novelties kits are always completely new moulds. While it costs a lot, I wouldn't say it's prohibitively expensive (as it's done regularly).

Correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK GMK don't do dye sublimation, just double shot injection moulding.
