Anything with modern 1800. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Are  American Pastoral and I Married a Communist good also?  I only ask because it seems they contain references for The Human Stain.  There was also a film adaptation.

American pastoral is good but very complicated. I don't remember if I liked the Communist novel. I would like to suggest you to start with the shorter or simpler books, like Indignation or the human stain. Nemesis is also interesting.
