Have people choose from that image? And then give them measurements accordingly?

Well I think we already have the proportions (the actual Japanese Flag) but we need physical key-mounted measurements so they can alter the design of their dot in the manufacturing process.

A keys is about 150mm in height. The dot's diameter relative to the flag's height is about 2:3.5. So...the dot should be about 85mm. (I used a crappy ruler).

95% (I make careless mistakes). I took very quick measurements using a cheap ruler. It'd be best if someone verified.

I multiplied too much (1.5cm = 15mm not 150mm). Its the cap is 15 mm, the diameter needs to be about 8.5mm.

I haven't had to measure anything since A-Level physics.

Good thing I said I wasn't 100% sure, also I was right about me being careless.

That's pretty much the measurement I came up with; 12mm would have been 90% of the key itself. If that is the consensus that everyone wants, a 6mm diameter dot, I will send that in. My measurements come from a rough look using a inch-based ruler and a converter so I am in no way certain.

Japanese flag: In 1999, Japan adopted new legislation on the national flag. The legislation set an official national flag with 2:3 proportion, and the sun disc at 3/5 of length in the center with BENI-IRO on white field.

So a 1 unit key will not look right.

... That's why we're doing it as a modifier or potentially a capslock, so it won't be square.

And every key being LOD would be absolutely hilarious.

You may need to get this done with annother buy. But I'll try and do something to the image. I'm just worried about the whiskers being too thin.

Are you interested, in this design only. Or would you care for a different one? I'm quite the talented artist, you know? ; p.

EDIT:

I have taken the cat thickened the whiskers and removed some. But anyway, I've got a copy I can edit now. So if you're really interested in getting this done, we could give it a shot.

That specific image was more of an example, I'm a fairly terrible artist myself, so I had to just find something proper and edit. If you don't mind, you're very welcome to make your own, but initially my post was mostly to check if anyone else was interested (Cats are awesome, so who ain't?).
The original looked like this, but as mentioned, I'm not necessarily interested in this specific art, so long as it's a cat, I'm all happy :3

The large number of colors would be hard to reduce to a 2-shot key, and I'm not sure what limitations there are on dye-sub.  But yeah, I would be in for a nyan cat key.

This has to be done. I'm most certainly in for one. But to my understanding this wouldn't be possible to do with a doubleshot keycap, correct? Regardless, make it happen !

It would be very imporacticle for a doubleshot keycap. It's got way too many colors. Unless you're looking for the outline of Nyancat (but that would just be retarded).

I'm brainstorming ideas on how it could look for a doubleshot. But, it's not gonna work. There's just too many colors. Even if I retain Nyancat's border as black and use grey for body color, the poptart would look wrong.  We could use grey (body color) on yellow/pink (poptart color). But that would mean no eyes/mouth.

Any dyesub guru know if it's possible with dyesub

Could this be done with dyesub and would all the multitude of colors make this cost through the roof?

Also, would it truly be nyan cat without the sharp, blocky look?

If it's doable, I'll get started on it after I eat my dinner (KFC ...too lazy to cook). Does it need to be like one SVG per color? Or can I just lay it all down on one file?

Why not make it multiple images; like a dye-sub set. Create a Nyan-stream across the F-row or something.

Why not make it multiple images; like a dye-sub set. Create a Nyan-stream across the F-row or something.

If you can make keycaps that have like rows of colors (of the rainbow). Then yeah.

Also, almost done with the picture

EDIT2:

I realized that the program didn't make my "pixels" touch

You can do all the colors on one svg. We're probably going to have to do a really medium blue, but guys. I just had the most EPIC idea ever:

NYANCAT AS BACKSPACE

RAINBOW OF KEYS GOING ALL ALONG `1234567890-=

basically, 2 different rainbow keys, one where it waves up, one where it waves back down, alternate the keys and it looks like a rainbow trail!

Edit: looks like some of you had similar ideas lol.

The SVG doesn't need the lines for the pixels, since the size of the thing is way too small to be able to see the lines between them... it'd probably just mess it up somehow knowing how complicated the process is.

It would be a 3key design, with Keys 2 and 3 having extra quantities based on what people would want.
I like my Browns more than my Blues.

I fear we won't be able to get enough people in on this to make it worthwhile.  But a nyancat number/function row would be epic as hell.

We could probably get gizmodo, etc. to post about it even.
