Hi all,

Welcome to the NEW interest check for SA 8010. With a new house and renovations that have taken up his free time, FRANCO has passed this project on to me to run, so let's go!

I've reworked the kits to be more GB-friendly, trying to stay faithful to FRANCO's original vision for the set while taking into account recent trends with SA kitting/sales, lessons learned from running SA SAIL, and some requests from the old IC thread. Since I didn't have easy access to the form responses, I've created this new IC to gather everything in one place.

GB Date: March 1-31, 2021

Vendors & Pricing

Kits

Alphas

I decided to break up the original base kit into alphas and modifier kits for more flexibility with overall kit breakdowns. F and J are homing keys by default.

TKL

Modifiers for TKL and 60% support. Extra white keys give the option for an all-white HHKB bottom row, like the original 8010 keyboard.

Specialties

Extension kit for 65% and 660 layouts, as well as Mac bottom row swaps and the elusive 2u Shift.

Numpad

I think this one needs no explanation. Like F and J in Alphas, 5 is homing by default.

ISO

Enough keys for physical ISO support, with option for either an alpha or a modifier for the extra 1u key next to Left/Upper Shift.

Ortho & 40s

This kit has ortho support in combination with the Alphas and 40s support in combination with the Alphas and TKL. Includes a bottom row 0 key for 4x12 ortho boards.

Split Spacebars

Small spacebars and Alice support.

PROG

Keys for lefthand macro columns.

Please fix the IC form so I can use it without a Google account (because I don't have one, and very much don't want to have one).

Also, please, please add colevrak, or at least dvorak, kit. Alternatively an alpha kit with the logic symbols only, not even the '.', ',' and '/' keys, to add complete freedom to those who like interesting layouts. Would fit really well with the general weirdness of the set, which I really like.

UPDATE 2020-10-29: Upon image searching "decision data 8010" and further reflection I think it is quite perfect as is. :-) I'd still like to be able to use the IC form though.

While I'm all for a Colevrak kit, it was discussed in the last IC that this would be prohibitively expensive due to keeping the dual legends correct while changing around the letters.

I don't think a mono-legend symbols kit was discussed.

Small update today, but brought back the Modern numpad kit from the first IC. Full details below and in the reserved post:

- Moved 7u spacebar from TKL to Alphas
- Moved 1u blanks from TKL to Specialties
- Removed 1.25u META key from Specialties

- Added bottom row 0/ key to Ortho & 40s kit

Another update, mainly revolving around the Modern kit, but a few other tweaks (and reversals) as well:

- Moved 7u spacebar and 1u blank white keys back into TKL kit (blanks are for HHKB, so it makes more sense for them to stay in this kit)
- Removed non-homing 5 key from Numpad kit, so 5 will be homing by default (like F and J in Alphas)
- Added more options for bottom row 0 key in Ortho/40s kit
- Revised Modern kit to shift integrated numpad up by one row. I was never really happy with the initial design of this kit, which is why I didn't post it originally. Bottom row 0 can look really awkward on certain layouts. The benefit of this configuration is that 789 will be in their proper places, thus helping to orient yourself on the number row. Please note, 4x12 ortho and 40s is not supported by this kit. Thanks to konstantin for the help on this kit.

As a small ortho user, you would prefer the numpad to be in the standard, modern orientation, correct? I guess the good news with that approach is that no more than six new keys would need to be added to the ortho & 40s kit, as the 456 row would be able to be reused from the base alphas. I think Fredington already had a mockup for this.

If he decides to go that route, my suggestion would be to keep the extra keys in the modern numpad kit, and only put the bottom row 0 keys in the ortho kit (which is where they currently are). The reason for this is that there might be some non-40% users out there who like to have their modern-orientation numpad start on UIO instead of 789, so they would be able to make use of these keys as well.
Edit: Actually, doing it like this poses a different problem. So I'm not sure what the best approach would be here. So far, including it in the ortho & 40s kit like you suggested sounds viable, if a couple of unnecessary keys are cut.

Hi, I don't intend this to be disrespectful to either you nor jae, but how hard is it to grasp that prototypist is not an EU vendor? I see this on like every other group buy, and its so frustrating. The reason we have regional vendors is to avoid expensive shipping and individual customers avoiding to have to deal with customs. BOTH of which are not achieved with prototypist as a vendor. I could just as well order it from Australia, or the US with a slight increase in shipping costs. Stop using any UK based company as an EU vendor. Its not an EU vendor. Its a vendor with closest geographic proximity and nothing else. Please speak to one of the multitude other vendors in the EU: mykeyboard, Keygem, and oblotzky (who runs a ton of keycap gbs on his website) just to name a few.

The same also applies in reverse to UK customers where sales are with EU vendors, which is worth keeping in mind.

Problem is that this GB date is March 2021.

That's a fair point - what the situation will look like by March is unknown. But to be clear, there is no situation where you both pay VAT at checkout and pay customs. It will be either or.
