WHERE ARE YOUR ICONS?

Probably hidden for the purpose of screenshotting.

Why would you hide your icons? They're there for a reason.

You don't need icons at all.
On my netbook and on my desktop I have a blank grey background (or some nature wallpaper with light filter), no taskbar. If I want to run a program I use Win+R. Works like a charm.

Because I don't like to see them. I prefer to see an unadulterated wallpaper. Does that bother you?

/too bad. =)

Please ignore the unfinished Chrome download.

I have icons that I never use, and, except for the bottom row, the games are organized by engine for the most part, besides BF1942 sitting between 2 Frostbite Games.

Why would you organise them by engine?

It just seems to make sense to organize them like that to me. It makes them relatively easy to find, about as easy as any other categorization would make it. I personally can't think of a purely better way of organizing them, as I tried just grouping all games together, which especially now would end up in a cluster****.

Huh, I generally sort my games by genre or playstyle, not engine, since engine doesn't really matter in how a game is played. Other than the Source engine. All Source engine games play pretty much the same. But any other engine and I generally can't tell which one it is when I'm playing a game.

In my steam library (which is where I usually launch my games from) I do have it organized by genre (except for Half-Life and Counter-Strike, those get their own category), because while the engine thing works when you have a few games (like the ones I have installed), for 60+ games, I need to sort them by genre.

I haven't found anything at work that ran on XP and won't run on 7 (yet).  We mainly haven't replaced these machines because they are working, and because it takes a couple of days to reinstall all the development tools on them.

No they look pretty much exactly the same, except you've gone and cluttered your win7. If anything win8 is even more cluttered with the explorer ribbon and whatnot, and in my mind the whole metro ui is just more convoluted clutter.
Edit: I think what you really mean is that you like win8's use of solid colours and hard edges over the gradients and whatnot in 7. Although getting 7 to look like 8 is a piece of cake.

Also, you can mod win7 much more to your liking than you can with win8, and I'm not sure win8 will really ever catch up since the whole customization scene has died down quite a bit after Vista. It was really strong with XP, didn't really lose all that much traction with Vista, and then took a while to get some really proper stuff out for 7. There is some good stuff for 8 out, but you're far more limited in choice than with 7, and by the time 8 has catched up I expect it will be obsolete if the scene doesn't speed up.

There is not as much custoscene I think for 8, because the default theme is so damn good for once. It already is sleek and minimalistic style and you can make it pretty much any color. It probably takes care of style complaints for most people that hated Fisherprice or glass stuff in the past.
I've been into Windows custo for like a decade at least and there is barely anything I do for change 8 besides some icons replacement/removal. I like the 'metro' style icons for everything, and always have to get rid of those awful 'film' overlay icons for video files. I might have a go at tweaking around the msstyle a bit to move some things around (want to move stuff like the menu and ribbon collapse buttons up into the titlebar) and 'fix' the file preview pane. Pretty simple mods really.
Vista, 7 and 8 msstyles take a LOT more work to do than XP so there have been less for that reason. Also MS likes to change how things work, where resources are kept in each release a little and it sometimes takes awhile for everything to be relearned and discover limitations.

Remember themes in XP?  They had to be signed by Microsoft, and they only ever signed like about 3.

So hacks appeared for each service pack level to allow custom themes to be installed.

Thousands of those abound!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Eh, while the default theme in 8 isn't really bad, that's not always the main reason people customize windows. For many it's just about variation or making it more personal.
I think the reason for the reduced scene is because a lot of the members have sorta grown past it and have other things that take up their time and attention, and as you say; there's more work to be done than there was on XP, so there's not a whole lot of new blood.
edit: also, quite a few have moved over to either Linux or OSX over the years as well

If you go on deviantART and look you will see quite a few new custom styles, but the majority of the stuff that gets released there is either downright terrible or completely unoriginal at best. If you're lucky you may catch one of the good releases though.

It's still like that; to use custom themes you still need to mess with UXTheme.

I wish it was still possible to use the Win95 look in Win8. So much wasted space with the new panel and stuff... Moreover, it's *slow* via RDC.

Tell that to our department's admin. Or don't. There's no point in doing so. He's a MS fanboy.

Edit: I think what you really mean is that you like win8's use of solid colours and hard edges over the gradients and whatnot in 7. Although getting 7 to look like 8 is a piece of cake.
yeah, that's exactly what I mean. the flatness of it is more minimalistic. I don't consider the bright colors to be very minimalistic.
