I wish, Win7 won't display animated gifs as wallpapers... something XP would ;_;

I don't even care about wallpapers these days. I don't use graphical launchers, icons on desktop, taskbar (although it's there) or window decorations either. All I need is a vertical panel with clock and systray (to turn on/off Redshift and IM), KRunner, Yakuake and then the applications themselves.

Also, nice avatar - the lighting is fantastic!

Nice. There are a couple here too: http://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/pbqr5/solarized_based_gtk/

Had to tweak it a bit because I wanted the darker base color for the backgrounds of things but it was a good one to start from.

Well it almost doesn't matter, to be honest, as most software is available on most distros.
You can run both Fluxbox and Gnome Shell on your setup.

If you want a fun time tinkering you should try Arch Linux, though. You'll learn a lot setting it up.

I disagree. Arch specific configuration don't even need to be edited that much. What I liked about the Arch setup process is that when you're forced to make decisions (how to manage repo sources, what window manager to use, etc) you learn about the things you're doing. You'll learn about the different components of an OS by installing Arch.

If you don't want the hassle of the long config, though, I recommend #! (crunchbang).

Its so hard to find nice wallpapers which work on a monitor at 1600x1200 :(

Think I need a new monitor, is there a thread around here which can recommend me something decent but not over priced?
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Hard to find? I use google image search, just set the image size (larger than 2MP, 4MP) in advanced search option can always find something. It never hurt to have a higher res, it will downscale it and it will look even more crisp.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
