So after a long 14 days of shipping, I received my first (ever) artisan cap! I think it took so long because this little guy had customs enthralled...Show ImageAwesome art! And it matches...Show ImageBad pic I know. I took a lot of photos and that's the best I could do. The lighting here is horrible It looks amazing in person. But yeah, thanks Binge! I absolutely love it and it will always be cherished as my very first artisan.

Quote from: Binge on Tue, 08 September 2015, 10:37:05So I'm going to make as many forced patina keys as I can, but it's not exactly a great process. If I get exhausted from the process there will be more copper keys. The idea is to get ammonia to evaporate salt which quickly tarnishes and patinas metal in contact with the salt. The technique is aggressive and TBH even with a respirator my nose was pretty ****ed up for most of yesterday. I still faintly smell ammonia in everything. The first key I did without the respirator and that was a bad idea. A well ventilated room was not enough. In case anyone missed the first key,Show ImageYou need a vent. Ammonia isn't what I would consider too dangerous, but OSHA does. Get some duct work going. It is an irritant and the OSHA limit is 35 ppm for 15 minutes, if I remember correctly. A mask isn't going to help much. Full respirator is required for NH3. Maybe do it in a sealed system with a water trap. If you still get the smell in the air, mist water to get it to aggregate and wash it off of the floor.

Hey Binge! I've been reading this massive thread and I'm trying to get into making some of my own artisans. I want my caps to have more of a matte finish, is there a specific resin I should be using to get this effect?

I want my caps to have more of a matte finish, is there a specific resin I should be using to get this effect? No. If you have questions regarding the chemicals in the casting process please be sure to contact your chemical manufacturer before requesting the support of other artisans. I do not say this to put off friendly communication, but I believe that unless you understand the materials you will fail to become competent. As to the topic of finishes please continue to refine your sculptures. The easiest way to think of the solution to your problem is: If your sculpture doesn't have a matte surface you will not get a matte finish.
