Caught Evil Dead 2 over the weekend, the original Evil Dead movies (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, & Army of Darkness) are easily my most beloved horror movies of all time. If you haven't seen them yet & consider yourself a horror fan they are must watch movies. Sam Raimi at his best IMHO. The 2013 remake was alright but made a big mistake by not including the comedy the series is known for. Also the Ash vs Evil Dead series on Starz was spectacular, it made for a great throwback to the horror & comedy from ED2 & AoD. :thumb:

My favorite movie of al time is ED2! I still loved the remake though, and I loved it because of the lack of comedy. The serious turn of the movie made it great for me. imo they would have never caught the charm of the old one if they tried to re-create the comedy.

I do see where you're coming from about the remake & kinda agree with you. Trying to recreate the original ED horror/comedy vibe would've most likely really bogged down the remake. TBH it was a good movie, I more meant it was just alright when compared to the originals. Although I do remember hearing some rumors that Raimi intends on crossing over both Ash & Mia's universes at some point which could be really cool if done right IMO! Not sure what the veracity of that rumor was & haven't heard anything else about since unfortunately.

Rewatched Stage Fright, Sleepaway Camp 2, The Burning, and The Prowler this weekend. All hold up well after 25+ years  :thumb:

I've never seen Stage Fright or The Prowler but Sleepaway Camp 2 and The Burning are both really good.

Definitely check both out if you're into 80s slashers. Stage Fright was pretty great for what it was/is; the whole film is contained within a theater so no one is out in the open.

Not particularly a horror fanatic: cheap gore does nothing for me and I have no time at all for torture porn. I like the Scream films which are mentioned earlier, and also Event Horizon.

Another series that I did enjoy:
  • Ginger Snaps
  • Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed
  • Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning

The Prowler is just good fun, not the best movie in the world but you could do much much worse. Best watched drunk with friends imo haha

The Scream series was anti horror pretty much, a not so subtle jab at the slasher genre haha. Great, great movies though.

April Fools Day's ending might be one of the few 80s slasher twists that holds a candle to Sleepaway Camp's

Sleepaway Camp is the only movie that has ever contended with ED2 for my favorite movie ever. The twist is most likely 70% of that reason haha. I'll check out April Fool's Day tonight!

I don't think it's been mentioned here, but BASKIN from 2015 was great, and on the darker end of the spectrum. Super underrated.

Watched Raw the other day. That was pretty great.

Off the top of my head here's a couple of other flicks from this decade:

Coherence (2013) - Probably not a horror, bit more sf, but defo creepy and unsettling.

Never saw the original It. Might try to watch it this weekend. Was not interested in the remake whatsoever, but the buzz around how good it is has me intrigued.
I'm not one for horror films (gore makes me uneasy and jump-scares are too much for me), but I'm very keen on checking out this new one.

Just saw It last week. I saw the orginal TV mini series and also read the novel by Stephen King and gotta say, the latest iteration is pretty close to the book I've read. Bill Skarsgard is awesome as Pennywise the clown.   Go see it!

Haven't read the book either, but I went this weekend and it was great! I'm not a fan of jump scares, but the couple that were in this film weren't too much, and I really enjoyed the film. Solid 8/10 is what I would give it. Been thinking about it since I saw it and I definitely want to watch it again when it releases.

Never mind hands reaching up, just come to Straya - we have poisonous snakes in the toilets here (on a regular basis, apparently).

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Ended up going by myself as well. The wife agreed to watch it, but after hearing about it from some friends she declined. She watches the most violent TV shows but when it comes to children being harmed she can't do it.

More popcorn for me!

Society

SYNOPSIS:

Bill is worried that he is ‘different’ to his sister and parents. They mix with other ‘upper class’ people while Bill is more down to earth. Even his girlfriend seems a bit odd. All is revealed when Bill returns home to find a party in full swing. Not for the weak of stomach

I'm not even going to write a full review for this, because it isn't exactly the best movie I've seen. What I will say about it, is that the last 30-45 minutes of this movie are pure unadulterated nightmare fuel.

~6/10~

Phantasm

Synopsis
A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a lethal arsenal of terrible weapons with him.

I went into this movie, expecting it to be a color by numbers horror movie about a weird and possibly homicidal funeral director, What I got was a **** storm of crazy. Every character in the movie is just a little bit off it seems. The younger brother essentially stalks his older brother, the older one is somehow never rattled by anything (you'll see what I mean), and there is a random appearance by an old psychic grandma who never shows back up. Aside from it's weird characters, the plot barely makes sense, and nothing is explained in the movie. With all that being said, this is a great movie.

Lot's of good gore, the music is FANTASTIC, the Tall Man is very memorable and creepy, and the movie overall looks great. It reminds me of Giallo in so many ways, with the erratic scene changes, creepy music, and vibrant gore that pops out of the screen. It's no wonder after seeing this, that there is such a huge cult following.

Watched this movie on Prime called Hell House LLC, about a group of people documenting them opening a haunted house for Halloween. It was pretty good, not too long, had some creepy bits to it as well. Really the only qualm I have with the film is that the ending was kind of weak, but some people might think otherwise I'm sure.

Overall I'd say it's worth an hour and a half of your life and is perfect for this time of year.

Perhaps not horror in the traditional sense of monsters and gore, but still preying on real fears: Sanctum is based on a true story.
A film about a diving/cave exploration team mapping an unexplored underwater cave system in the jungle. An extremely tense experience for anyone with anything close to claustrophobia, thalassophobia, or asphyxiphobia. I actually found myself breathing irregularly along with the movie as it forces the characters into cramped time-sensitive watery tombs over and over. Some great set design in this as well.

JIGSAW

Synopsis
After a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement officials find themselves chasing the ghost of a man who has been dead for over a decade, and they become embroiled in a new game that's only just begun. Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift of life? Or is this a trap set by a killer with designs of his own?

Went to see this with my wife as it is her favorite series of Horror, and had some low low hopes for it. I watch the saw movies as a guilty pleasure every now and then, but none have been as good as the first two films. I do like to see the new contraptions of death every now and then out of curiosity. This one was really no different, just trashy creative ways to kill people, a twist at the end, and a mediocre storyline.

~4/10 overall 6/10 deaths~

The Babysitter

Synopsis
The Babysitter, directed by McG, follows Cole (Judah Lewis), who is madly in love with his babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving). She's cool and awesome in all the ways Cole is not. One evening while Bee is babysitting, Cole witnesses the unthinkable. Now he must survive a night full of first kisses, first broken hearts, and first encounters with homicidal maniacs (played by Bella Thorne, Andrew Bachelor, Robbie Amell, and Hana Mae Lee).

I went into this with very low expectations, and came out of it very happy, This movie was surprisingly good. Very upbeat and the comedy was great, making it feel almost like the Scott Pilgrim of horror movies. Lots of parts of the movie I didn't see coming, while others were very predictable. Overall this was just a fun movie to watch for fans of older horror movies and B horror, but don't go in expecting some sort of thrilling masterpiece.

~7/10~

Forgot to add there is one annoying thing in this movie, the vine dude. He just inserts vine humor into rando situations.

I remember seeing a movie called The Cave that was similar to Sanctum, but I think The Descent take the cake for cave and/or cave creatures movies.

I'm admittedly a beginner to this genre but one part of The Descent spooked me harder than I've ever been spooked.. I'll never forget it

The only older horror movie I've seen is The Exorcist but there are a number of, mostly mainstream/supernatural, newer ones that I enjoyed, at least :

  • 28 Days Later (My favorite)
  • The Sixth Sense
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Disturbia
  • The Unborn

I like horror but have a bad habit of judging a book by its cover when it comes to older horror films. Thanks for the suggestions in this thread Dude!

I watched the Saw series recently.

Good effects, some interesting ideas, and the plot twists in the first few movies are great.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original Dawn of the Dead. It has a healthy mix of action and horror and is very b-movie, but it's definitely entertaining. It's got a different tone than Night of the Living Dead, but that's not a bad thing, and the infamous "political" undertones of the original aren't really there (do expect lots of jabs at consumerism though). Tom Savini plays a small role, in addition to his primary role of designing the zombie makeup, and he does a good job of stealing the scene.

The movie's action elements are a bit toned down--after all, the film was a low budget movie. There are actually times you might feel sorry for the zombies as well. The movie does a pretty good job of reminding you that the characters are in real danger, even when you get sucked into the "coolness" of their behavior. And it establishes relatively early on that none of the cast is safe from death. Despite this, it's one of the earliest zombie movies to actually develop a female character--we see her go from "nearly useless" to "quite genre savvy" over the course of the film.

The gore isn't spectacular by today's standards, but it was notorious at the time for nearly netting the movie an X-rating. There is one particularly hard to watch scene near the end, although hardcore horror fans won't be too upset by it. I wouldn't really call the film a gorefest, suspenseful or scary, but it's a classic for a reason, and pretty much every zombie movie since has drawn cues from either it or its predecessor.

My recommendation on Romero's Dawn of the Dead: well, you won't find it (legally) online. At least not for streaming. However, if you can get your hand on the Divimax DVD, you'll get one of the most complete cuts. You'll have a hard time buying it new though.

The remake is really love it or hate it--I liked the directors cut, and I don't really see how running reanimated corpses is any more or less plausible than the typical reanimated corpse, but a lot of people take this issue seriously for some reason.

Definitely second The Descent. Just make sure not to get the US cut. Sure, the original ending is depressing as ****, but it's much better than a cheap jump scare that doesn't fit the movie's plot.

I watched the Saw series recently.

Good effects, some interesting ideas, and the plot twists in the first few movies are great.

I randomly watched Saw 3 while drunk one night and didn't really care for it, but after being prodded by a friend of mine, I sat down and watched the whole series and to my surprise, I actually liked them!

Oddly enough, I prefer the newer Dawn of the Dead.  I don't have anything against older horror and in fact, I prefer it a lot of times, but I just feel like Dawn of the Dead 2004 was a better film for my tastes.  The original definitely has it's place and set the tone for lots of horror movies to follow, and it's also a great movie, but the lack of Ving Rhames and zombies babies puts it a bit behind.
