Introduction to Digital Menu Boards for Restaurants
In the fast-paced world of restaurants, captivating customers and driving sales requires more than just delicious food – it requires an immersive dining experience. Enter digital menu boards, the modern solution to traditional static menus. Digital menu boards for restaurants have revolutionized the way businesses communicate with patrons, offering dynamic, eye-catching displays that showcase menu items, promotions, and branding messages in a captivating manner. In this article, we'll explore the benefits, features, and best practices of digital menu boards for restaurants, and how they can transform the dining experience for both customers and restaurant owners.

Understanding Digital Menu Boards for Restaurants
Digital menu boards are digital displays that replace traditional printed menus, offering restaurants a versatile platform to showcase their offerings in a visually engaging way. These boards typically consist of high-definition screens or monitors mounted in strategic locations throughout the restaurant, such as near the entrance, above the counter, or at individual tables. With dynamic content management capabilities, digital menu boards allow restaurants to update menu items, prices, and promotions in real-time, providing greater flexibility and control over their marketing efforts.

Benefits of Digital Menu Boards for Restaurants
The adoption of digital menu boards offers numerous benefits for restaurants looking to enhance their operations and customer experience. Some of the key advantages include:

Increased Visibility and Engagement: Digital menu boards capture the attention of customers with vibrant visuals, animations, and videos, effectively showcasing menu items and promotions in a way that static menus cannot.
Enhanced Branding and Ambiance: Digital menu boards allow restaurants to reinforce their brand identity and create a cohesive ambiance through customizable designs, colors, and themes that align with their branding guidelines.
Improved Customer Experience: By providing dynamic, interactive menu displays, digital menu boards empower customers to explore menu options, customize orders, and make informed decisions, enhancing their overall dining experience.
Real-Time Updates and Flexibility: With digital menu boards, restaurants can easily update menu items, prices, and promotions in real-time, enabling them to respond quickly to changes in inventory, seasonality, or market demand.
Cost Savings and Sustainability: While the initial investment in digital menu boards may be higher than traditional printed menus, they offer long-term cost savings by eliminating the need for frequent printing and reprinting of menus, as well as reducing paper waste and environmental impact.

Content Management Systems (CMS): Digital menu boards are typically powered by user-friendly CMS platforms that allow restaurant owners and managers to easily create, edit, and schedule content for display.
Dynamic Templates and Layouts: Digital menu boards offer a variety of pre-designed templates and layouts that can be customized to showcase menu items, pricing, images, and videos in a visually appealing manner.
Dayparting and Scheduling: Restaurants can use digital menu boards to schedule different content to be displayed at specific times of the day, such as breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, or happy hour specials.
Integration with POS Systems: Many digital menu board solutions offer integration with restaurant POS systems, allowing for seamless updating of menu items and prices based on inventory levels and sales data.
Remote Management and Monitoring: Restaurant owners and managers can remotely manage and monitor digital menu boards from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easy to make updates and track performance metrics in real-time.

Even the AT Model F begins playing with it just a bit, but for the main cluster that's the basic idea, and it's pretty consistent on the XT Model F.  I can certainly appreciate the mod-colored keys going down the left and back up the right of the main cluster, though, especially as the principle eroded over time.

The switch mechanism is distinctive and satisfying.  I haven't pulled the trigger on a vintage board yet, but I have a core memory of pingy, clicky, tactile Model M and F keys, and some people just want to keep typing on them.  Throw in some respect for sturdy workmanship and muscle memory, and it's not surprising.

Dumb question: why do people buy these keyboards today, in 2024?

Besides the collectors, I mean.  Is it because they want to run terminals, terminal emulators, or point of sale stations?

I have some not-so-fond memories of the 3270 PC.  My company bought many of those, and then doggedly insisted on depreciating them over the industry standard five year lifespan of all other office equipment.  Notwithstanding the rapid pace of technological innovation that made them practically obsolete, in much less than five years.

Yes, they're big, and in some ways, still impressive.  Would I want one on my desk today, to type on?  No thanks.  There are better choices.

When you look at the Model F, the colors have a consistent meaning: One color if it types something, and the other if it does something, with numpad + and - as the only exceptions.

For some reason I didn't realise that the colours had that meaning, but now that you've said that, it's so obvious.

I was always confused with why the hkkb had the alpha colour on the top left for the beige keycap set but now that's pretty obvious now.

Still prefer mod |\ for hhkb because it looks nicer but that's pretty cool nonetheless.

Agreed also the "`~" and "\|" keys should be defaulted the same color as the modifiers, not the alphas on standard kitting.

On regular ansi keyboards I don't like mod pipe and tilde, looks weird to me, especially on something like a tkl. Though the layouts that I normally use (tsangan/hhkb stuff like that) I do like the `~ key to be the mod colour, while the |\ key is alpha colour, just feels more right.

When you look at the Model F, the colors have a consistent meaning: One color if it types something, and the other if it does something, with numpad + and - as the only exceptions, but while I don't know 80s productivity software well enough to say with any certainty, I almost wonder if some programs simply didn't echo them as characters.  The Model M's F1-F4 and F9-F12 muddy the waters a bit more in return for easily distinguishing the three clusters, but it generally maintains the convention.  I can see the symmetry in mod-colored tilde and backslash though, and I have boards with each.
