Oh man, this can't come fast enough now. I bought some cheap PBT caps in Cherry profile, and it turns out they're too shallow for my keyboard (most keyboards, I would assume). They hit the side of the switch top, causing my Gateron Silent switches to be almost clicky ones. Very annoying. Can't wait to have me some deep, rich, thick, DSA bois instead :)

Update:

We plan to place the order with SP by this weekend.

TKC is currently doing some back forth with people wanting to change their orders.

I assume the situation is similar with our proxies as we wait for their totals.

Keep in touch ;)

Yes, I'd say this was a very successful group buy.  And how about Colevrak kit's orders being almost 10% of Alpha's?

I'm glad to know you both like the graphs!  :)

The final numbers don’t include the extras that TKC and myself will buy.

We should place the order either today or Monday. I need to confirm some details with SP, first.

I will keep you updated.

Yes. I sent out the order so the proxies should be getting their invoices shortly.

PS. I added back the teal 1u "=" key to the numpad kit and 1u Fn to TKL. :thumb:

Honestly I am surprised that the overal final order count wasn’t higher. The colorway on the set is rivaled only by the inimitable DSA Honeywell (I decided on this one instead of the Honeywell. Why? Because of the novelties. Otherwise it would have been a paralyzing decision. :) )

Now the only thing left is determining which of my boards will get this keyset. Have a Plaid, a Core both of which I love. Preonic from a GB is coming this fall as well as the CandyBar. Cant wait for the early Christmas and facing the decision as to which board will be my daily driver.

Okay, so I'm about to send the graphics for the novelty legends and I would like your input...

Obviously, the legends in the original renders aren't 100% accurate. I based the following render on SP's documentation:
  • Modifier legend height: 0.100", ~0.015" line thickness
  • Number row legend height: 0.150" (I think?), ~0.020" line thickness
  • Alpha legend height: 0.187" (I think?), ~0.020" line thickness
Proposed novelty legends:
  • (Pi, e) legend height: 0.125" OR 0.150" (same as number row)
  • (Phi, h-bar) legend height: 0.187" (same as alphas)
  • ~0.012" minimum line thickness (variable)

Option 0: Original renders (for reference)
Option 1: (Pi, e) @ 0.125" height
Option 2: (Pi, e) @ 0.150" height

Poll: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdM52K2dW2fEOzQ99JiX7_SYu6RqpegcVRNhf7icPZrRdICBQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Remarks: Option 1 is closer to the original LaTeX size ratios. Option 2 matches the symbols on the number row. Another option could be 0.133" (not shown), which would match the original renders better.

Open to other possibilities.

PS. Hyp/sin/cos/tan legends are in the regular Gorton Modified font @ 0.100" (same as other modifiers and same as DSA Dolch)

Option 2, seems clearer / more consistent to me, yet also sufficiently close to renders. Option 1 a touch small.

I think I’m leaning towards option 2 too, mostly because they need to compete with the much larger and clearer alphas. But honestly, either way will probably look great.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Definitely leaning towards the 0.150 inch legends for pi & e.

I think either way would work, but I just wanted to make sure. It's actually kind of tricky because the LaTeX (CMU) font has a variable stroke, whereas the rest of the set is fixed.

Basically, I fattened the symbols to meet the minimum line thickness, while rescaling to the desired height. Seems obvious, but I wanted it to look right without redesigning the symbols with a fixed stroke.

I'll leave the poll open for a bit, but I'm going with Option 2 for now. :thumb:

Where will they be used and how?

Alpha colored caps => match numericals. Go with option 2.

Mod colored caps => match mods. Go with regular Gorton Modified font @ 0.100"?

I realize it might be overkill to go with both, but I suspect they'll be used both for numericals and mods so going with just one of those heights would make them mismatch the other, I guess. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • 0.100, 0.100, 0.100, 0.100 (uniform, modifier height)
  • 0.100, 0.100, 0.150, 0.150 (LaTex proportions)
  • 0.150, 0.150, 0.150, 0.150 (uniform, number row height)
  • 0.150, 0.150, 0.187, 0.187 ("Option 2")

Last option should be something like 0.225 for phi & h-bar (respecting the 1.5x ratio with pi & e), but that's much larger than any legend on the set. (I think) the alphas are 0.187. There are many other possibilities as well...

Personally, I still prefer Option 2. Keep in mind that, even on the reference calculator, the legends are all different sizes.

They don't have to be consistent in size-- they just have to look consistent.

I think the optimal height is something in the range 0.133~0.143 for pi & e, but I'd rather keep it simple and similar to the regular DSA legends.

Okay, I just got what you meant... but I have no idea what that would look like. I'd have to provide a center line, but that would still look similar to the first/second row from the previous post, at least in scale. Imagine a fixed line width.

I think you should just do what you think looks best but yes, option B is nice because it’s optically proportionate.

Hey... it's me, the DSA Scientific guy...

Update

✓ Order placed
✓ Graphics
✓ Payment
☐ Production (started)

The order was placed shortly after the group buy ended. About ~1 week to compile the proxies' numbers and evaluate how many extras we would each get. Well over 100 in total.

The vectors graphics were finalized and approved a while back. We re-confirmed various details about the legends (eg. equal size Numpad symbols, scale of novelties, etc.)

All our proxies (ahem) have finally paid, just last week. There was an error in the invoice SP sent, and it took an extra week to get the updated invoices. The good news is, detecting the error now means less delays in the future.

We were quoted at 10 weeks (~end August) for production end/shipping. However, that included several weeks for in-house custom colour matching, which was already done (last year!) when I ordered the samples. So, there's potential for cutting down production time quite a bit, depending on whether they need to redo the colour matching. I haven't got a newer time estimate (other than 10 weeks). For now, they have started to work on various molds. Therefore, we can say that, for all practical purposes, production has started!

I will update when I have further information.

Cheers!

I doubt it.

You could ask SP to make some while the group buy is in production, but it will be very expensive. If you can gather 10 people, then it could be around $15 each (that's my guess from a previous quote).

You could ask SP to make some while the group buy is in production, but it will be very expensive. If you can gather 10 people, then it could be around $15 each (that's my guess from a previous quote).

I asked and the price is $50 for a single teal 6.25u spacebar!

Well, I know a bargain when I see one!

There’ll probably be some extras. The last numbers are probably combining the vendors at the end even if they were purchased throughout + vendor purchases?

Yeah... it did boom on the last day, but many extras were added after the buy ended.

Basically, that's the final order we sent to the manufacturer. It accounts for all buys, errors and extras.

It wasn't really necessary to publish it, but TKC posted these numbers on their website, so might as well... for historical purposes.

Does anyone know if there will be sets to buy through the vendors after the GB is finished? As in whether they bought a bunch of extras to sell themselves? I stupidly passed on the Ortho kit, might want to pick that up as well since I started getting into ortholinear and split keyboards only after I bought this set, and it looks so amazing on ortho layouts.

Is this set still expected to ship on August 12, as it states on TheKey.Company?

I haven't got any news from SP about DSA Scientific (even though I'm in contact with them for another project).

Not sure where TKC got August 12 from... August is still the expected ship date, derived from the 10 weeks ETA (after order).

I will update as soon as I have more info!

Following up on this. Aug 12 is only 4 days from now. Is that when it will ship from the vendor, or is that when it'll ship from vendor to customers?

No no no... August 12 on TKC's website is wrong. I looked at GMK Skiidata and the date is the same, so it must be a placeholder date from when they overhauled the website. (no idea...)

I still have no date from SP on shipping. The "August" shipping date is calculated from the normal DSA doubleshot production time estimate, which is 10 weeks from payment.

As far as I am concerned, production should finish and ship to the vendors in August, assuming there are no delays.

As mentioned in the previous post, I will update as soon as I have further info.

Updated our page. Spoke to Melissa yesterday. We are on track for delivery before the end of August. I set the ESTIMATED fulfillment date as 9/01 and will update again when we get more info.
