[IC] The Silmarillion
« on: Wed, 07 August 2024, 22:38:27 »
Hello everyone, this is CHAOSERA, today we bring you our new keycap set——The Silmarillion.

The most gifted Elven smith, Fëanor, crafted the three Silmarils, which contained the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. When the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, stole them, Fëanor and his sons swore a blasphemous oath, determined to leave the Blessed Realm and seek revenge at all costs. Thus began the hopeless wars of the First Age. A lord who challenged a dark god; a wanderer who defied fate; a fugitive who seized a Silmaril; and the greatest mariner in history… These heroes, fighting for a bright future for the world and resisting the darkness to the death, forged one of the most tragic chapters in the history of Middle-earth.

The Silmarillion is a comprehensive historical account of the world of Middle-earth, particularly detailing the ancient ages not touched upon in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It tells the story from the creation of the world to the events of the Rings and the Third Age.

Layout:

Complete set of 288 keys, including two BASE sets.

In this design, the primary script used is Tengwar. This script was created by Tolkien for the Elvish languages. In the Middle-earth series, the Tengwar script was invented by the Noldorin Elf Fëanor. Initially, Tengwar was used to write the languages of the Elves of Valinor—Quenya and Telerin. Later, more languages began to use the Tengwar script, including Sindarin and the Black Speech created by Sauron. "Tengwar" translates directly to "letters" in Sindarin (singular form "têw"). The script was brought to Beleriand by the Noldor who fled to Middle-earth and was widely adopted by the Sindar Elves. Prior to this, the Sindarin language was written using the Cirth script (Dwarvish runes).

For accuracy, I spent some time studying the Tengwar script and chose Quenya grammar for this design. If there are any mistakes, I kindly ask Middle-earth linguists to provide corrections.

Sections:
Main Part pcs:87

There are 87 keys in the main part. It is worth mentioning that the Quenya language does not have the character "J", so Sindarin is used instead.

The translation of the spacebar text is: "One in the high heavens, one in the deep sea, and one in the flames of the world's core."
Aside from the ones in the core of the earth and the deep sea, the Silmaril that ascended into the sky was also part of a tragic love story: Beren, for the love of Lúthien, gave his life to take this Silmaril from Morgoth.

Spirit Part pcs:43

This section contains the second set of numbers 0-9, 26 letters, and 7 symbols.
Based on the English alphabet, it includes some names or short phrases from The Lord of the Rings with Quenya translations.

A-Aragorn
B-Bilbo Baggins
C-Cave troll
D-Dwarves
E-Elves
F-“Fly you fools!”  This is the last sentence Gandalf says before falling off the cliff.
G-Gandalf
H-Hobbits
I-Isildur
J-“Juicy and Sweet” This phrase is said by Gollum.
K-King
L-Legolas
M-“My Precious” Gollum's iconic line, stemming from his obsession with the One Ring
N-Nazgul
O-One Ring
P-Power
Q-Quest
R-Rings
S-Sauron
T-Tom Bambadll
The main character in the Middle-earth historical novel The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. He also has a significant role in The Lord of the Rings. Immune to the power of the One Ring, he is one of the most mysterious characters in the legendarium. Unfortunately, the movies do not cover this legendary figure.
U-Underhill
V-Victory
W-White Shores
X-Axe
Y-“You shall not pass." Gandalf's line when confronting the Balrog.
Z-Zenith
[/center]

Numpad:
The numbers 1-9 represent the nine Nazgûl, and 0 is "Nazgul" as the collective term for the Ringwraiths.

1.Er-Murazor The Witch-king of Angmar, second son of Númenor’s 12th king, Tar-Ciryatan, and brother of Tar-Atanamir.
2.Khamûl
3.Dwar of Waw
4.Ji Indur Dawndeath
5.Akhorahil
6.Hoarmurath
7.Adûnaphel the Quiet
8.Ren the Unclean
9.Uvatha the Horseman

Since the original work does not provide names for the other Ringwraiths besides the Witch-king of Angmar, these names are derived from the Middle-earth games.

Seven Symbols:
These represent the seven Dwarf-lords, kings of the seven Dwarven clans. The seven clans are Longbeards (Durin's Folk), Firebeards, Broadbeams, Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, and Stonefoots.

zNum Part A & Num Part B pcs:17+11

This is a redesigned version for the Nine Rings, harmonizing with the Spirit Part.

The Quenya translation is: "They are the Ringwraiths, the Nazgûl, the most fearsome servants of the Enemy. Wherever they go, darkness follows, and their cries are the sounds of death."

I'm very concerned about the legal side of this, but it's a fun set. If everything is good, then I hope for the best

As a Tolkien fan, this is an incredibly unique and thoughtful design, probably an insta-buy from me. However I too would be concerned about the legalities of using the IP as it is presented here.

I like it, but I'm pretty sure Drop has an exclusive license to Tolkien's IP, at least in the keyboard realm.

Hello guys, thank you for your suggestions.
I am also a fan of the Tolkien series.
In order to pay tribute to those great works, I made this set of keycaps, and most of the patterns are original.
Of course, if there is any infringement, please contact me and I will deal with it immediately.

There's no "if". This is infringement.

I wish it wasn't. This looks much better than the horrendous LOTR sets Drop has released since Corsair took over.

I'd probably buy it.

I agree wholely with the other comments, this is a great set that it appears a significant amount of effort has been put into.

I'm not an IP law expert but my understanding is that such a product is best released under license, you could argue that it's derivative but if this were a GB I'd really not be comfortable with placing an order for this with such a question still outstanding, and I suspect a lot of vendors will wisely avoid it on the same grounds.

With regards the name, the  word "Silmarillion" is subject to active trademarks in both the US and the UK for categories of goods that in my opinion a lawyer could argue keycaps to be - novelty items.  I suspect the Tolkien estate holds the trademark more broadly in other territories too.

With trademarks, there's little to no room for fair use, especially as a product name - in order to remain protected, the holder has to be seen to enforce their trademark. Thus it's highly likely this will become subject to legal issues with the name as it stands.

As others have said, this is almost certainly infringing on a range of copyrights owned by a notably active copyright holder that has a licensing arrangement in place with an existing vendor.  Quite apart from whether the tolkein estate would take umbrage at this, the license holder would intuitively find this problematic and detracting from the value of their license.

It feels like it would be a bad idea to group buy in its current form.

None of that is to say that the concept is not great, and some of the artwork on its own, with an appropriate font (not something that is someone elses ip) might be a gorgeous set.
