Which high quality 1.5mm thick keycaps should I get?
« on: Mon, 08 May 2017, 22:48:04 »
I'm looking for high quality 1.5mm thick keycaps (preferably with black dyesub) for my TeamWolf TKL keyboard with 6.5g R5 Zealio switches. Money is no issue for me. Is Cherry profile the best one for typing on Zealio switches? These are what I'm considering purchasing:

http://www.geekkeys.com/geekkeys-dark-grey-dyesub-thick-pbt-full-keyset/ < I've heard that these are made by gateron and if that's true, I'd rather get this over Gateron Blanks

http://imsto.cn/index.php?route=product/product&path=62&product_id=108
https://zealpc.net/collections/keycap-sets/products/cherry-original-blank-black-pom-keycap-set

I've heard that Leopold keycaps is the only one with the average of 1.533mm keycaps while gateron is 1.371mm: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=71690.msg1754614#msg1754614

I've also heard good things about IMSTO, GMK and BSP keycaps.

Which one should I go with? And are there any other high quality keycaps that's 1.5mm thick with black dyesub? Thanks.

Given that 3 of those options are sold out I'd go with the geekkeys or originative set.

Also, yes, cherry profile is the best option.

But that's purely subjective.

There is so much personal preference when it comes to keycaps from profile to material to color preferences.

I don't get all the current hype over exact thickness requirements etc.

Also there is a lot of misinformation out there because people just spout off information like it is gospel when in reality it is completely unfounded, mostly opinion and sometimes flat out wrong.

The best thing to do is if money is no option is buy a few different sets and try them out and see what you like.

I happen to be a fan of leopold caps but also use leopold keyboards.

But I agree with JQ cherry profile is the best.  :))

The honest truth: all those listed above are great. If you want blanks, go for the the gateron pbt. I can't confirm that the first link is in cherry profile, though. If you want legends, I would lay up a bit more you buy JTK or enjoyPBT (I would get the ePBT). The ePBT can be purchased from AliExpress and you can get some JTK from originative's.

For ABS, there is nothing better than GMK, and I would recommend GMK over basically everything above, even though it's ABS (not all ABS is created equal). Find what keyset you love, and go with that.

It's becoming the PBT is always better than ABS idea that really has no basis in fact.

While thick keycaps do feel better than thin keycaps a difference of < 0.2mm isn't going to matter.

Agreed. The only real difference that I can think of above .7mm is in sound.

I am pretty new and I found the same keycaps you listed there.

I ended up buying the ePBT Japanese with Sushi keys as my first set from Aliexpress (same as kbdfans.myshopify.com), and I really enjoy them. I feel like the thickness is just right, and they sound really good on my keyboard (B.mini EX X2 78g Zelios with Zealencios).

I am on the same boat as you where I've heard great things about all of these, I want to get a GMK set at some point.

edit: The set I received did not have any problems with them.

Here are some pictures I took with my phone: imgur gallery

I currently have the Originative Classic Black set made by MOD keyboards that you included a link to on a Code 104 MX Clears. Couldn't be happier and they appear just to be as thick (if not more) than my Vortex Dye Subs. Great price imo for a solid Cherry profile PBT set.

The link: https://originative.co/products/classic-black

Also, I really like how dark / black the keys are. You can just barely read the legends. Close to being a blank set.

If you're using thickness as a gauge of the "quality" of keycaps and measuring down to a thousandth of a millimeter I don't think there's a set of caps anywhere which will make you completely happy.

I ended up ordering the black Leopold front printed keycaps from the eBay seller called widebasket.

But I also want to get the black dyesub keycaps as well.

For black dyesub keycaps, I've narrowed down to either Originative Classic Black, IMSTO black dyesub or EnjoyPBT black dyesub, which one do you think is the best between the three?

I know IMSTO is still out of stock, but I'm willing to wait if it's better.

I decided to go with the https://originative.co/products/classic-black because the other 2 has scooped keycaps. I'm very happy with these flat originative keycaps and they feel amazing. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Only downside is that the Teamwolf TLK doesn't use cherry stabilisers so I'm waiting for better hot swappable TKL to come out.

I know I am biased but great choice!  :thumb:

I love my set!

I'm one of the weird ones that enjoy digital caliper comparisons. From what I've seen in photos (not owned) Ducky provides some pretty thick PBT keycaps
