should definitely be an 'opt-in' thing, and not on by default.

I would think the numbers wouldn't tell you much considering many posts aren't very long.

That would probably result in a very slow WPM score, seeing as that is only one "word".

And hey I didn't say it would be practical... just cute  ;)

And what about those of us who proof-read our posts and make minor corrections before we submit?

Discrimination!  Get off my lawn!!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yeah, I don't see how that would work; I have to actually think about what I'm going to say next, then go back and proofread, etc.

What would be kinda cool is if we had our own kind of racing lounge, perhaps where people could replicate some of the longer posts on the forum in a race.

You'd probably want Characters per minute.  Anyway, I'm one-finger-tap-typing this reply on a tablet while reclining on a couch, so I don't know how APM would be relevant to always be shown, as it doesn't reflect proper typing speed.  As mentioned, editing and deciding what to post will also kill APM numbers.  While promoting thoughtless and poorly edited / typed replies by those who will want to top the APM charts.  Which is just silly.

This. Although it could help if we have a board option 'ignore any posts over 10 wpm'

(This post was not written by macro, but it could have been. Plus I can cut and paste to a very high speed and accuracy)

What if I typed up my post in notepad and then pasted its contents into the message box? Then I'd have the highest WPM on the whole entire forum!

I think that a high WPM count on a post would be mostly an indicator that maybe you didn't spend that much time on the quality of your post.

I often click Reply and then think a while before I type. Then I read what I have written, and maybe edit it a bit. Then I click Post.
I often do a whole lot more editing if I quote another message, because I often reduce the citation to the one or two sentences that my post is a follow-up to. I also try to avoid too many levels of nested quotes.

I don't think so. While I make posts oftentimes where I already know exactly what I'm gonna say, sometimes I make a post that requires time to consider.

I type all of my posts on a piece of paper using my IBM Selectric Typewriter, and then I have my secretary transcribe them for you here.  Her WPM is off the charts.
