Title: Splited, low profile membrane/mechanical keyboard for laptop
Post by: svhVP on Wed, 18 July 2018, 02:54:05
Hi.
Is there any Splited, low profile membrane/mechanical keyboard for laptops on a market? It would be nice to put it on  standard laptop keyboard and enjoy travel with ergonomic keyboard instead.

Welcome to geekhack :)

This may sounds like a good idea but resting a truely split board on the built in one will result in keys being pressed on the build in keyboard.  Even if you disable it this may cause permanent damage.

You could get something like the Atreus (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54759.0) which is a split layout but in one piece, but if you have a big keyboard it might be sat entirely on keys.  Plus it's small and column staggered so you'd have to learn to type again...

How wide is the laptop?  Are you looking for standard layout or not bothered?

Edit:  Missed the slim part.  Don't think the low profile Kailh switches have arrived in a split board yet but that's what you're after.

I would love to try these but it's almost imposible to find keycaps. Novelkeys only.

Iris (https://keeb.io/collections/frontpage/products/iris-keyboard-split-ergonomic-keyboard?variant=2650673709086) is a DIY split ergo keyboard with two versions: one for Kailh Chocolate switches and one for Cherry MX-compatible.
It does need a USB port though. There is no version with Bluetooth.

The kinesis freestyle is a high quality membrane keyboard. Get the 20" separation option instead of the 9" for extra flexibility, even though those bastards charge like $20 extra for 11" of cable.

Edit: missed the low profile part. Ignore me.

Check this out: Helix (https://dogbone.design/helix/ ) seems to meet your requirements, it's a splited ortholinear keyboard that supports Kailh low profile switches  :)

BTW. I forgot: Goldtouch Go!.
Standard QWERTY with horizontal rows, not vertical columns or ortholinear.

Also absolute and utter garbage (had one for travel, almost made me stay home forever).

It doesn't make sense to optimize Anything for the laptop,  because the laptop itself is incredibly UN-ergonomic.

What good is better hand-comfort, when your neck is broken.. or if your eyes are burning from having to look at the tiny 15 inch..

Get your wurk done, go home, use DesktopPC w/ Ergodoxxx.

If you continue with that, KPRepublic just started selling kailh low profile complete keycaps sets for a very reasonable price. Despite that. Blank keys are only available from Novelkeys and here, the switches are far cheaper.

The new Acer Predator Triton 900 has mechanical keyboard.

Hopefully Acer will introduce these keyboards on less expensive, every-man laptops as well.
