How to get some Cherry MX "Cylindrical Type" Keycaps?
« on: Tue, 05 January 2010, 07:43:01 »
hey

i'm in the process of building a small selfmade keyboard
i got the pcb, know how to get the switches, but the problem lies with the keycaps...

due the design need 1 row of "uneven" ones (a/b)
but i can only find "even" keycaps (d/e/f)

does anyone know how i can get keycaps like these?
single keycaps or whole keyboard doesn't matter

Well, Elitekeyboards sells a set of blank Filco keys.

They are "uneven".

Any Cherry G80 should have these 'ergonomically shaped' caps with a different angle for each row too, so you could buy an old one from ebay.

That said, you could even use caps from a Cherry G81 as well.  They use the same interface.

thanks both of you
guess i'll just order a g80-3000 now since i need the switches anyway
i don't think they are angled enough though but we'll see
(used to about 15 degrees angle on my belkin n52)

I need the ESC and F keys (1-12) to go onto Cherry browns for my split Kinesis Contoured project. Are you saying the keys from a Cherry 81 series will fit on the stem of a Cherry brown? I see some $20 range keyboards on Ebay. For what it's worth, I would like to get the narrowest keys available.

I also would like a defunct Cherry board to cut and mount the switches onto. Any idea where to get that little item?

Thanks

i make a "gamepad"
belkin n52 encasing (modified) with its great ergonomics and d-pad
but adding my own keypad with 7 more buttons and a even more comfortable more ergonomic key layout
all hooked up to a new pcb

Just be aware that the Cherry Corp keys are pretty low profile.  Like 1.5mm lower than a Filco key.

Filco

One advantage of the key coating is the flash pictures look better on the Filcos.
thanks it looks like the filco keys will be a must-have for my project
still waiting for delivery of my cherry though after i got the wrong keyboard deliviered yesterday :-/

Cool, I like N52 mods.
[-IMG]http://geekhack.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=5514&stc=1&d=1257178276[/IMG]

cool
wouldn't have thought there are much other n52 fans
your thread, especially the part of the different switches and their springs, was very informative and interesting
made me order linear keys for now to eventually build your praised "reds"

and btw
the logitech g13 is really poor
don't waste your money on that one

i mainly don't like mine because its way harder to find the right button
there is no real parking position for your hand on the g13 so you have to get in position like on a regular keyboard
on the n52 i don't ever have to look at it and easily find each button blindly

also the terrible joystick...
even modded its easy to lose grip and the way for the thumb to trigger a button-press is way too long
might not be that bad if you use it for analogue input
but digital its terrible

today i finally received the last of 3 keyboards and did some testing
here is my personal opinion (mainly agrees with yours):

black (default): terrible
white (default) terrible

blue (+blue spring): best for typing / pleasant sounds / tactile activation point
black (+blue spring): best for gaming / no sounds / unfortunately also no tactile activation point
white (+blue spring): it could be like a silent blue but the "huge tactile bump" is just a bit too huge and makes pressing the button too exhausting

I noticed this, too, in my SPOS 'board.  The grey switch in the spacebar is basically a white.  I swapped the spring with Scroll Lock, or something, because the spacebar was too stiff.  After the swap, the tactile bump almost seems to hitch and makes the spacebar stick a little.
