Title: [IC] TGR-910 CE
Post by: yuktsi on Wed, 06 September 2017, 12:04:46
(https://i.imgur.com/i3clQej.jpg)

To be frank, I hadn't spent much time typing with the Jane/Jane CE. And that's because I am quite a fussy person, when it comes to the typing feel of a board. In a way, I am quite particular about the bottoming feel/sound. The Jane is just not as good even with a few of the screws removed from the plate. My guess is because of the plate and the weight. The plate was based on the Duck Orion. The quantity was too little back then, I wasn't so keen on increasing price in order to have the weight made like the one with 910.

To those who don't know what 910 is, here are some photos from Ferdi, 910 R1 (http://imgur.com/a/tmk9W). I've been using the same board for just over a month now. Which is rare in my case because I normally switch my daily driver every few days. I know I'd mentioned that there won't be another round for 910. But with all the jigs already made from the last round, I am hoping to make a little profit with this CE round. Especially after forking out much to fix/remake all the sub par boards from the first round.

Weight
I had some hard time deciding if I should keep the same weight design as the R1 910. The weight of the R1 910 was machined from a 18mm thick brass block, with the tolerance of only 0.2mm, it's certainly not an easy process. Using a 2.5mm or 6mm flat weight like the Jane will make the process a whole lot easier, but will need to compromise typing fee. And also the cost. It's not an easy decision to make, really. Nevertheless, the weight of the CE will the same as R1

The bottom case is probably the only major difference between the R1 and CE

Color, Delivery, Switch Plate, Price, Quantity
I would still very much like to complete the whole GB within 8-10 weeks time. Yes, the community is being very understanding with delays, but it's still some level of stress for me to bear. I would like to keep the choices color limited for this round, gray and black, perhaps silver too.

To keep things simple, brass will be the only switch plate option. I am hoping to get at least 20 orders. 20-30 boards are the sweet spot for me to complete within 8-10 weeks time. Price should be around $300 like the R1.

I could use some advice on the choices of color and plate. Any critics or suggestions are welcome too.

TBH, I haven't decided yet, but I do hope to make more of these from time to time. I would also love to have some made with a different material other than aluminum, such as stainless steel, titanium...

Acrylic looks awesome. Titanium would probably be a must buy for me with brass, stainless steel, or STONE for the weight (please do stone, that would be amazing).  Sand blasted texture on titanium is a thing of beauty.

So VERY much this!!! These clear electronics were such fascination of my youth. Remember being stoked to get this bad boy in college.

Also dating myself here, but I loved this very Walkman as a little kid. Seeing the electronics and record/ playback head and the tape moving- all to listen to music. Frigging magic!

Sorry to throw the thread on nostalgia, but like others have said, I would be thrilled to see something like this Polycarbonate 910 come to life for a few units just so whether I get one myself or not, we could all enjoy seeing more keyboard art out in the wild. Awesome designs, Sam!!!  :thumb: :thumb:

Why do you need a new PCB made? You do prefer QMK huh?

Speaking of PCB, this is the PCB I made for Elaine's project, but she didn't like the color. I am planning to do the same for the CE. Matte green with the gold immersed finish at the soldering pad. What do you guys think?

Green PCBs are underrated
I feel we overdid the whites, and love the green again.
Very much like the matte green and gold, while purple is always my color of choice this stands on even ground with the Zeal60 pcb for colors I like.

Wow, that another level of glossiness  :blank: I had the Tris PCB made in glossy/normal green, the appearance nowhere near the one that you just shared. I am so jealous of your 86u, have you thought of replacing the case with one that is made of aluminum and comes with the winkeyless blockers?

Would a brass insert for the 910 logo in the top right corner be possible?
That's a really good idea. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that. I just requested for a quote for the brass blocker, let's see how it goes.

Thank you  :-*

That's the ideal plan, I've come across 89u's for a makeshift WKL Realforce, but aluminium WKL Realforce is definitely a long time want of mine.

Well, you know my view on this from R1 where I didn't have the best luck out there, maybe it's better this time, though I'd have to get a different PCB made.... probably still worth it  :thumb:
Why do you need a new PCB made? You do prefer QMK huh?

Speaking of PCB, this is the PCB I made for Elaine's project, but she didn't like the color. I am planning to do the same for the CE. Matte green with the gold immersed finish at the soldering pad. What do you guys think?

I think my head would explode if there were a polycarbonate case 910 with a full polycarb plate. I would hunt one down and do terrible things for one.

Please.

Yeah, I really need QMK, well, anything with less input delay than BMC and Jigon. I play rhythm games a lot and I'm used to the delay of QMK/TMK/O2D implementations using a 32u4, BMC and Jigon are just a bit slower which throws me off a lot.

Ok but again in not nerd terms sir

There are two microcontrollers that are commonly used for our custom keyboards, the 32u4 (used for QMK,TMK and O2D) and the 32a (used for BootmapperClient/ps2avrGB and Jigon).

From my personal observations I came to the conclusion that the time from when you press the key to when it registers on the computer on 32a implementations is a bit longer than on 32u4 implementations.
In the grand scheme of things this does not matter for 99% of users, but if you are playing rhythm games with very tight timing windows and are used to the faster one it makes a very big difference.
Let's say your timing window is 30ms, which means there are 15ms before and after the perfect timing that it still counts, let's just assume the increased delay is 5ms higher (this is NOT the actual value as I can't accurately measure it). This effectively makes your hitwindow 5ms smaller as well as making every hitsound appear 5ms later than you'd expect it, which will make everything feel wrong.

Q: "I don't play these games, why would I care?"
A: If you don't use any of the other features QMK offers that BMC or Jigon do not offer you have no reason to, even for normal competetive gaming it does not make any significant difference.

Quite interesting- thanks for the explanation, I was wondering as well...

I love the level of nerdiness and detail we all care about here- and all for different reasons. Programming, gaming or just for a kick ass way to get work done every day, it's pretty cool that we all choose to dive deep in this mechanical keyboard world. I like it and enjoy hearing things like this that make one board different from others and even motivate you, kawasaki to the (seemingly to me- really difficult!) world of designing your own PCB.  :thumb: :thumb:

I've yet to study in detail, but can QMK be implemented by simply replacing 32a chip with 32u4? I can share you the schematic drawing if you need.

I still haven't looked into converting but I think that's basically it, well it probably needs a few different capacitors and resistors to drive the controller, but the other stuff should be the same or really similar.
It would be really awesome if you could share any of those PCB files with me, it would definitely make my job a lot easier.

It's all TBD until Yuktsi drops the form. There are lots of hopes and dreams floating around (come on Polycarbonate!!), but Sam has to decide what's feasible for production. He runs some of the best buys in the bidness, so whatever he comes out with, it will be awesome and will be done right.

I'm truly in love with the clear case. Any chance of a run of them? Either way gonna try my luck for one of these.

The matte is definitely nice, personally more of a fan of glossy PCBs

From an 86u, the color is gorgeous in person, very emerald green.

I hope the acrylic insert will be offered too?

Holy... this board is amazing. Feel like the demand will far outnumber the supply!

It's all TBD until Yuktsi drops the form. There are lots of hopes and dreams floating around (come on Polycarbonate!!), but Sam has to decide what's feasible for production. He runs some of the best buys in the bidness, so whatever he comes out with, it will be awesome and will be done right.
This totally sounds like a comment Elrick would post under an LZ IC  :thumb: .

I like the good old Elrick. He's a funny dude.

12pm eastern in USA?

That's how I read it but would love some clarity. Now I'm assuming it's noon on Sunday in NYC.
