Can you recommend a good starter flashlight? Not too big on EDC. I generally only carry my phone, wallet, keys, and maybe a pair of earbuds.
I suppose I wouldn't want to invest too much in a flashlight if I don't know much about them in the first place. Maybe suggest a good sub ~$30 one? (If that's even a price point for a quality flashlight.) Battery type wouldn't matter either.

$30 for a decent flashlight is doable, but for a higher quality light it is stretching it a bit, considering the battery cost as well, ill make a list of a few different options.
To start off, the bottom of the still worth getting barrel: Mainly from chinese companies, or knockoffs of better light's, Stay clear away from knockoff lithium batteries, like ultrafire, but the flashlights themselves are okay.
Firstly, a knockoff ultrafire light that claims to put out 1000 Lumens, in reality it puts out 500, but for $3-5 USD...... It's dirt cheap, that's a very high lumen to dollar ratio, it does not include the battery or charger, and runs off 18650's , and if it break's.... well who cares at that price as long as you get some use out of it. I'd say the same thing with most of the sub $20 lights on amazon, as long as they take an 18650 and have decent reviews, they should be fine for light to moderate use, they just dont take to much abuse.

Now for a bit more serious light, that is still a fairly good deal, the ThruNite Neutron 2C, it's about $30 USD, and takes the standard rechargeable lithium cells like 18650 as well, though again not included, it claims 1040 Lumens and thrunite is usually a lot better with there claims.
http://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Neutron2C-V2-CW-Flashlight/dp/B00MO0IT84/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1452995654&sr=8-16&keywords=thrunite
For any of the lights that dont include batteries, id highly reccomend either thrunite, or nitecore batteries and chargers, they usually go for $18- 20 USD for a single cell and a charger. just stay away from cheap no name or chinese knockoffs like ultra fire if you dont want any chance of burning your house down..., they usually are unprotected lithium cells.

Now the light that im getting for my daily driver, the thrunite TC12 has a built in USB charger and an included battery for about $70, with a 1000 max Lumen output, and many other lower output option's.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll be sure to check this out when I have some time.
Ive had a four sevens preon for ages. It takes AAA but is really bright, handy for a pen style light. They have just updated the design and the new one looks even better.
I'm a big fan of the Surefire GX2. Nice and lightweight and waterproof as well. Great camping flashlight.

I have a Surefire G2 LED that I bought about 8 years ago, I think the one you have is the next generation? The thing that got my goat with the G2 was the soft button on the end that was not an actual button. I ended up finding an after market supplier which made a clicky tail cap for it.
Does yours come with a clicky tail cap standard, also I have much hate for C123A batteries. They are so expensive, I was able to get them from work but when that dried up I pretty much stopped using that torch. Now it just sits in my car as a just in case item.

Has clicky button :)
Dude, I love cr123's. Quite cheap on Amzn. Back when Surefire was the only one who made them they were ultra spendy. Now they're around 20 for a 12pack.
Rechargeables like the big 18650's are excellent but heavy for the amount of maH in comparison.

Ah got ya, I think the first and last time I bought them was like just after I got that torch. I can't remember the exact price because drinking and life but I do remember thinking **** that I aint paying that much. Then work started supplying them and it was all good for a couple years. But then work stopped and that is when I went to foursevens preon.
Have you got any rechargeable torches? I think it is a good idea but for me it is easier and more reliable just to carry spare batteries.

My grandpa used Maglite, my father uses Maglite, and I use Maglite. I have 2; a Maglite Mini that I have had for more than 13 years that belonged to my dad, and a big 'ol 5 D-Cell whompin' stick one.
edit - a coworker has a Fenix PD32 that is very nice. Thinking about getting one as well.
I want to get a few that run on standard non rechargeable batteries, like AA's. I've had a couple cr123 lights forever ago, but i just really dislike non rechargeable non standard batteries. Having to carry a few extra rechargeable batteries around or on me is worth it to me, i can usually get about 3 hours per 18650 on my 600 lumen light. The torch i want to get will go 2.5 hours on 800 lumens or 1.6 on 1000. then again i have a pile of 18650's from all of the laptop batteries i've pulled apart, i just have to store them and charge them a bit more carefully since they are unprotected.

Wait, did you just pull the laptop battery apart and they were on the inside? the 18650s?
Yes, most larger li-ion packs like the ones used in normal form factor laptops just use a bunch of 18650's tacked together connected to a balanced charger, but the reason the packs go bad is one cell goes below its threshold voltage and kills the overall capacity of the pack.
I got these 5 Sanyo cells and two more that are in my backpack from my fujitsu lifebook's bad battery, all of the cells are still usable for at least a medium power flashlight. I have some more in one of my drawers from a dell inspiron.

That is some nice re purposing there, a rechargeable torch would work great with all those spare batteries.
There is actually a subreddit for flashlights. I got a recommendation from there and just ordered a Thrunite ti4 to carry as my EDC. It should be here on Tuesday or something and I'm really excited for it :)
If you're looking for a recommendation, maybe you should check out that subreddit too. They're really helpful around there. :)

For sure, those are good folks :thumb:
I want to point people to the BLF-348 (http://budgetlightforum.com/node/43488) community buy, which is nearing its close. $7, stainless steel, and a very nice Nichia 219b - I've looked around, and not much can really compete with it.
That actually looks really good and is pretty cheap. Any idea if it's been completed yet? I can't tell if ordering is over or not after reading it. They said something about shipping mid-march, so I'm kinda assuming the buy is over...

Yeah, it's a weird GB. By replying, you reserve a light and you can order it when they're ready to ship. But it's still open.
i have the s30 baton too. also have the s2 baton and m22 warrior.

Any pics of the S2?
I have two BLF-348's coming and a LiitoKala lii charger coming in the mail =)
The flashlight does not have circuit protection? Huh.. another thing to consider
Ah ok. I can see why you'd only want protected batteries in that flashlightThe flashlight does not have circuit protection? Huh.. another thing to consider
The flashlight does. But i still like to use only protected 18650's since it does its own charging. Its the 18650's that i pull out of laptop packs that dont have internal protection that i like to monitor the voltage on myself.
What's the best pocket friendly Single 18650 light. ?

What's the best pocket friendly Single 18650 light. ?I literally just got back from a weekend of fishing and by fishing I mean me sitting there getting drunk while other people fish and holy **** so many bugs. Now I know that your allergic to anything that does not come in a vacuum sealed packet so you may want to order a copy of Basshunter for your PS1. That way you will live 5.25 hours longer.

I've got the hat with the net around it and i made a small hole for a drinking straw.
You are set then.
