I just won an SSK auction on ebay, looking forward to joining the club. ;D
My '87I feel like I've seen that one before. It's very clean. I almost regret selling 3 SSKs as I hunt for a small keyboard for school use.Show Image(http://img.tapatalk.com/c6e4d811-640d-12e0.jpg)

Iknowright? It's a couple days older than me too :)
It's sad but I think so too ^___^
I'm sure I could kill a man with it because it's that rock solid
that industrial is gorgeous Snoopy.
You got the other two without keys?!
Is that a genuine industrial SSK? From what I've been told and digging around seems a bunch of people converted other keyboards into industrial SSKs with shells bought from Unicomp.I'm sorry, but it's only a fake one... Have a close look on the second picture and you see it. :)
Can you take a picture of the back label if it is?

Agreed. They're IMPOSSIBLE in the Uk though!
Great job Snoop. I have a few questions:This one is from 91. The keycapset is 2-piece (except some modifiers). Afaik they usually deliver 2-piece keycaps, except when you order blank blacks; these are one-piece.
What's the date?
Were the keycaps from Unicomp 1 piece or 2?
My SSKs have black barrel plates (or whatever they are called), can you tell by the color when the approximate manufacture date was? Mine are both from Dec of 1987.
It really needs the Salute...or OG :)

I suppose I should add one of my SSKs here. I somehow managed to acquire three of them before realising how valuable they are: and in that regard, as much as I'd like to spray or dye one of them black (assuming I could find white-on-black keycaps to match), maybe I won't. Apologies for it being a little grubby, I guess that's a side-effect of someone who often eats at her computer.Show Image(http://christinehedley.com/images/bits/unicompspacesaver.jpg)
My planned "mod", inasmuch as it is one, is to get hold of some keycaps from Unicomp to UKify it.
Edit: forgot to mention, they're dated 2004: which may not be as desirable a vintage as some, but I love them. :)
Very nice, cause its iso :) One doesn't see those often (original iso)Yeah, I'm glad I managed to snag myself some of them: my clumsy fingers aren't so good with the smaller return keys. :D
Hey Snoopy, whats a red clack?
My question is how do I turn on/off the numpad functions? My computer seems to boot into the numpad sometimes. And for now I've been unplugging the re-plugging the board, but surely there's a key or combination to press to turn the numpad functions on or off...

So, exactly how much of a unicorn is the Industrial SSK? I've decided I want an SSK and I really like the look of the industrial one, but I'm afraid it might be a futile search.

Really love this keyboard but I'm beginning to itch for something to slap on it, like an APL set from unicomp or a clack or something
I love every bit of this topic. That's my dream board, impossible to find here in France though.

How about red/green/blue legends ?

Wonder if they'll do a set with embedded numpad secondaries.

does somebody have some good pics of the unicomp apl set?
I received this beauty today: it's the bottom one, a '91 vintage IBM 1391472 SSK, next to my other SSK, an Unicomp ISO layout UNI04C6.

Sorry for the bad quality of the photo that doesn't do it justice.
It's got a precise and consistent feel through all the keys - really superb work of love by phosphorglow. This is #5 of a set of 6 SSK that were pretty badly beaten up and are now back to life. Really an amazing work!
Were those the ones with the coloured backplates, or am I thinking of something else?
Were those the ones with the coloured backplates, or am I thinking of something else?
Right, it's the red one: http://phosphorglow.net/2014/05/21/grungy-rusted-and-broken-ssk-no-5-december-4th-1991/
There were 4 of them left when I ordered it, and phosphorglow suggested this one considering my preferences and style of typing...
I have to say he totally nailed it, the more I type on it, the more I love it. I'm not new to Model M's (I have 5 more) but this is definitely the best overall.
Mine just left on a trip to phosphorglow's for a full reconditioning/bolt mod/LED mod... Cant wait!!!!!!!
Maxx does awesome work. I got my plate painted raspberry. And UV LEDs added. Too cool!!

How do you like the LEDs? I thought it was an awesome idea. I told him to go with the greens because I thought it suited the board (as most keyboards, specially old ones, used green indicator LEDs). He wont even have my board in his hands for a few days, so I may change my mind, but I think I'll stay with the greens.

I was absolutely blown away by the transformation! Maxx sent me some before pictures while he was in the process of restoring it and they had me a little worried if it would turn out or not. It's like a brand new board now though! Completely flawless! He even had to get new circuit membranes printed for this batch of SSKs. He said that they were by far the worst he's restored but that didn't stop him!

Just those loose rusty springs rattling around inside the case would be enough to put most people off (me included!)
Do you mind if I ask what the restoration cost? Not an exact figure, if you'f prefer not to tell, just a vague idea - $100, $200?

Actually, the front right corner (arrow keys) does not fit properly.
I would strongly advise against using a 42H controller and membranes for this project because of the way they are almost integral and have to be folded too tight.
If I could figure out how to solder to traces on membranes I could make it fit a lot better.
Is that specific to the 42H?
I love it. ClassyShow Image(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/23/b7dd4f6004abc51156aa5e2aac6f615a.jpg)

Today I received my first IBM Model M Space Saving Keyboard. I got it from elecplus via the DT forum. I got bumped up the list luckily. Woo hoo, congrats man! SSKs are so beautiful, aren't they? Really looking forward to seeing more sweet SSK pr0n pics from you in the future.

It's complete, alright! Beautiful keyboard!!! I'm tempted to grab some RGBs myself, but we'll have to see.
Do you guys have any suggestions for cleaning the shell? Mine isn't exactly pure white (you can see the photos), and I was wondering if there is an additional layer of dirt that could be removed with peroxide or something?
Maybe it's because they are using the brilliant white keys from Unicomp on it? Been there done that. The only thing is to actually paint the shell a glossy brilliant white to match I suppose.
Otherwise it just looks wrong. I wound up giving the set to another GH member.

what I always wanted to know... is this just a sticker over the normal oval notch, or did they use another/modifier mold to fit that sticker?

One weird thing about my new SSK, it's apparently had some of its keycaps replaced. One Alt key has a green legend and one black. Many of the keys are single-piece while others have the removable caps. On an '87 board, which ones would be original, one-piece or two-piece?
I might just buy a full set from Unicomp with blue legends!!!
I might just buy a full set from Unicomp with blue legends!!!
Please be sure to get the set on the Pearl/Pebble. The brilliant white set looks wrong, and they don't have a long brilliant white spacebar either. I am not even sure if they have the special keys for the SSK in those sets. You might have to custom order it that way. Never hurts to ask!
Good luck!
By special keys are you referring to the smaller legends for the number layer? Or are there other keys I'm not thinking of that an SSK has that aren't on a full-size Model M?
By special keys are you referring to the smaller legends for the number layer? Or are there other keys I'm not thinking of that an SSK has that aren't on a full-size Model M?
Yes, I am referring to the secondary numpad /scroll lock legends, as well as the NumLk/ScrLk key.
number row: 7 8 9 - =
tab row: U I O
home row: J K L :
shift row: M . /
Those keys have the secondary numpad and on the front have the scroll indicators.
If it's not necessary, you can go for that. The only other key is the NumLk/ScrLk.
I think that's the 16 keys that are different. Correct me if I forgot something.
Oh, and the Alt keys are green.
^^^That is a nice looking keyboard you got there^^^^^
But your missing a leg, could you use one from a normal size Model M?

The missing leg doesn't bother me - I don't use the legs.
I bought one from Cindy too and paid someone else to refurbish it. I'm pretty nervous at the cost of shipping that as well. At least, the cost is spread over a few months. My second SSK! My problem is postage. Pretty much every SSK I've seen comes from the US, and postage adds around $60 to the price. Then convert that to Aussie dollars and the price goes up by another 20% or something.
At least I have my Lexmark SSK (on which this was typed)!
I hate those permanent cables, especially the curly ones.
I hate those permanent cables, especially the curly ones.
I love permanent cables but despise coiled cables.
Micro-USB is probably a better choice than the more common mini-USB.
Excellent, fohat. Congratulations :)
Mine has also cleaned up pretty well, although I just used a kitchen scourer on the writing on the bottom of the case, which has almost completely gone now.
I still need to fix the sticking Shift and Enter though. Maybe the barrel inserts need a slight alignment adjustment?

Yes it can be done. I was going to make a picture, but I think you can do this without one. All you need is a narrow screwdriver. Gently nudge the pin on the key in the direction of the hole. Insert the key again, adjust again if necessary. You can use a Q-Tip to make sure the hole is clean too. With a little persistence, you will get it.
And be gentle. Don't break the pin.

I've thought about making one of these myself out of paper or something, but at $7 to buy one, why bother? Although Phosphorglow's website seems a little wonky right now and there's no way on the product page to choose a color when you add it to your cart. So maybe I'll hold off until PG gets the site back up to full steam.

Understood. I can't wait to see when his site is back up and everyone can see the work he does! It's just incredible what he can do. BTW you can see what colors he does offer with the underlays.
Colors: Red, green, light blue, royal blue, yellow, golden yellow, orange, raspberry, pink, and metallic copper.
Very cool thing to have actually.

My board finally arrived to me the other day. I believe I have the same controller. Typing on it now, I'm really pleased with it, it's like a completely different keyboard. If it weren't for a ding in the case that's still there, I would swear it was a brand new SSK!
Also, I had him put the caps lock LED under the Ctrl key because I swap my Ctrl and Caps. I haven't seen anyone else with the LED under the Ctrl key.

Thanks! I can not believe how solid this thing is for being almost 30 years old. I do not have to bolt mod it yet and the cable is pretty much perfect still. Only one minor flaw and it does not affect the keyboard at all. I did pay a lot more than I would have liked to but in the end after typing on it for a day I feel it was worth it. :)

Am coming to Brighton, Victoria later this year. Look forward to finding some nice vintage boards on eBay.au! Mainly interested in Model M these days but want to try an Model F at some point, just not that keen to mess about with conversion etc. Would like to do a bluetooth Model M mod in due course as well. Hardly an easy travel companion but the clicks are just to die for.
I am overly paranoid. I have this fear that these dyesub legends will fade away... lol ... It's like I am afraid to use the SSK :P
I need to rotate it out. Help me!

They have lasted this long, I'm sure they will be ok :). have a few keys that are pretty smooth, while the rest are pretty textured but that is not a big deal to me.

Just use it! Isn't that what you bought it for in the first place?

My only two buckling spring artisans:I like the checkkey because it goes with just about anything and is shaped like a keycap. I actually used it instead of putting it on a key I don't use much. Looks nice Belfong 8)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/T5vtVRu.jpg)

Once piece caps just feel so much better and are all around nicer.

I have boards with both. The two-piece are slightly weightier and feel like they transmit less of the click back through the key (and your finger). If I compare them side by side I prefer the two piece.
In a blind test I don't think the average user can tell the difference.
I've thought about hot-gluing the 2-piece caps together to see if they get more of a 1-piece feel. I have a bunch of spares, I just haven't tried it yet...

I guess you could, but that defeats the purpose of the 2-piece caps. I really honestly can't tell a difference between them.

What worn away legends are there? They all look intact to me.
Just Curious, I am trying to contact Maxx at phosphorglow.net to try to get my SSK fixed, but he has not responded to me yet

I want to get the case black as well but I'm not very confident in my painting skills. Might have to practice on some of my regular Model Ms

Get black fabric dye and do it yourself. Very easy.
Looks good. Painting isn't difficult either, just have to prep right, but I personally would not modify an SSK in a way that couldn't be easily reversed.
$20?I know! I had just started reading up on these here on GH and the unbelievable prices they go for and then--wham! I was too shocked to even move the first time I saw the pictures. I had to check everything twice. I take it as a gift from the gods for all the hard work I've put in this year. Having two must be pretty awesome.
I hate you :p
Mind you, I can't complain, what with having two of them :))
Just cost me a bit more, that's all.
$20 is a great price! I was happy to get a NIB for $150! I have not opened it yet... maybe never will!Such unbelievable luck, and I'm one of the most unlucky people I've ever met. I wouldn't open yours either, although you're missing out on the fun of using it. I still have yet to start using mine yet. I'm going to have to get a numpad first.

I read that F10 replacement as "Go to Hell" and immediately wanted it.
NICE keycap set!! Are those all one piece or two piece caps?? I've always preferred the earlier SSKs since I like the one piece units. They just have a slightly nicer feel imho. Even though others disagree.

There is a difference between these 2 piece caps and the 1 piece that I have never heard mentioned before. The 2 piece caps are actually slightly larger around the perimeter when compared to the 1 piece keycaps. I noticed this because the Y and U keys were touching. Then, I noticed that the gaps between all of the keycaps were narrower...interesting...

I am more curious than ever. I would think the regular controller would still allow you to use the extended features of the SSK without any problems, would it?
I believe it's the same controller for the SSK if I am not mistaken.
But I could be.
I just bought one of these. Does this count as well?
