Question about separate Numpads on Mac OS X
« on: Wed, 08 March 2017, 09:30:43 »
Sorry for the ignorance — I'm a novice.

Does a numpad get automatically recognized along with a separate keyboard?

I have a full mechanical keyboard from WASD (I do use the number pad a lot), but I like the form factor of the smaller keyboards. So I ordered a new, cheap mechanical 68-key keyboard. If I then buy a separate Numpad will they both work when connected at the same time? Are there any issues with these functioning together?

I use a Mac OS X.

Thanks!

The OS (operating system) will know that it is a numpad :)

You can use both at the same time.

Fellow OS X user here.
a) Should be just fine. Both working at once.
b) There are some num pads that say "Windows only" which seemed odd to me. Here's a link:

I further found that:
This         Generates
Key          This
--------     ---------------------
000          Generates 3 key strokes: 0,0,0
Home       doesn't do anything
Email       doesn't do anything
Calculator doesn't do anything

But the numbers, +, -, *, /, Delete and Tab all work fine.
Today's quote: '...“but then the customer successfully broke that.”

Excellent, thanks. Are there any mechanical keypads to recommend?

I wouldn't have known this as I'm not a Mac person but a few days ago I watched a Hak5 video about the Rubber Ducky that described the difference between Windows and Mac HID devices; OSX looks for a specific ID associated with Mac products. If it says works with Mac you're golden. If not you should ask whoever sells it. It's somewhat rare to find a new HID device that can't speak to OSX but from what I understand it happens from time to time.
