[IC] HOLO Custom TKL Keyboard (GB has been launched)
« on: Mon, 05 March 2018, 00:09:16 »
HOLO Custom Keyboard

Introducing HOLO- a new winkeyless TKL custom keyboard.
Designed at preserving a sleek and minimalist look, we did away with the bottom piece thus the name.
The whole keyboard will be milled from a single block of aluminium to avoid any gaps or color differences in anodizing.
Feel free to provide constructive comments on what you like or don't like and I will take them into consideration.  :)

How does the hollow case sound?

Yep, I was just wondering this too.  I would say quite different depending on the surface you have it on.  I'd like to hear it on a wooden surface and then on a gaming mat.  I figure those two surfaces would include the majority of users interested in the board.

damn this is some cool stuff!

just thinking like if we are able have a full rectangular ring of rubber (black or clear in color) instead of some rubber bump-ons, which will eliminate the gap between the board and the table.

either like this
190520-0

or this
190522-1

I am definitely getting one! And it will be even cooler if I can have a "SAN HOLO" engrave on the back side, lol one of my favorite DJs

I will test it out and let you guys know when I receive my next prototype, as this one has couple problems and will not be assembled at the moment.  :)

Thanks for the input! I'll see what I can do there but it's hard to make the surrounded rubber feet happen though. Rubber feet will have to be customized and it might cost quite a lot.
The original idea I had was to leave some gap at the bottom which allows this under glow effect from the bottom of the pcb.

Watch the anime and read the manga [spice and wolf]. It's a much more adultlike and realistic romance story than most that gives me diabetes every time I read it :)
Anyways, is there a price estimate? And a possiblity for an optional bottom (I like the aesthetic but I like weight too)?

Maybe we could make some Holo-inspired keycaps  ;) .  I'm thinking light brown alphas with white lettering based on her ears and tail.  Maybe something inspired by her clothing for the mods...

I’d join a combo set for sure, lol.

@Icy, any chance you could perhaps add an Acrylic or Polycarbonate diffuser to the bottom? Nothing massive, just to cover the bottom? I like the design, but having a fully open bottom makes me think I’ll type solder onto my deskmat eventually. :(

And watch Spice and Wolf! :p

I don't have a price estimate for the board yet as I am still waiting for the price quotation on the plate and pcb. I will let you guys know as soon as I have it. I need to see how the board would sounds when the second prototype arrives, and I will assemble and test it out. If the board is good with the current design then I might just leave the optional bottom out of the place.

If the board is good with the current design then I might just leave the optional bottom out of the place. But don't worry there is quite a big gap from the bottom of the PCB to the table surface.

I will see what I can do when the second prototype arrives and might be changing the design depending on how it sounds.

Without a bottom, doesn't the sound resonate off the desk and make it much louder? Seems like a strange design choice.

Well it depends on what kind of surface is under the keyboard if that's the case. And the louder the better when your favorite switches are 2010 cherry blues and artistotles. :)

The design might seem strange but you never know, just want to try something new here after trying all the other kustoms.

For anyone worried about the PCB being exposed, could just make a transparent acrylic / polycarbonate sheet layer that goes under the PCB and gets screwed on to the case with the same bolts as those connecting the switch plate/PCB (probably with some spacers inserted between the switch plate and the acrylic sheet).  Can add some underglow LEDs to the PCB to illuminate it when in use.

I think it would be a good idea to use a smaller logo or at least have some spacing above the logo. As you can see on the linked picture the upper edge is not straight because the engraving of the logo starts there, for me this is pretty ugly.

Also any idea about iso support and pricing?

Agree with this... I think the logo design is just fine, and suits the theme of the project -- but being able to see its edges like this from the 'seated' position is a but less desirable to me.

If it were just a uniform cutout.....      |____________|  .....itd be *slightly* better..

I don't think you're going to see the cut edges from a normal seated position, because of the bevel on the rear edge.

Thanks for the great suggestion, Photoelectric! That would be a great way for anyone wants an extra layer protection at the bottom.
I will work on it.

Underglow LEDs was something I had in mind since the keyboard has an open bottom.  :thumb:

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I have added the extra spacing to the top and bottom of the logo.
Hopefully it would look more sleek when you see it from the top. It's not finalized yet and I will see how the prototype turns out. :)

It's definitely a unique design I will be curious on how final prototype looks. to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of the large logo on the back but probably not a deal-breaker.  Always nice to see something different thanks for thinking outside the box. Could be interesting
