Kinda off topic but does anyone have a link to a tool that can open the Model M? Need to do the bolt mod. Been to a couple stores and none of the tools i've found fit.

Any decent socket set should have the 7/16th long throat bit you want.

Might be 7/32 idr

It's the 7/32 that you need for the case. 1/4 for the ground cable if I'm not mistaken. This kit has all you need: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006OBFEK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Very nice, my parents first computer was a Packard Bell with a 486 SX2 processor.

Either way, I finally got my Kishy done aside from paint, but that will have to wait as I am not doing that myself.

Here is a quick pic.

Damn I'm old! I remember my 386 DX 33 Mhz which I could boost to 40 Mhz, while it was running, by pressing the "turbo" button. And that was far from my first computer: first computers were 8-bit beasts :)

It seems to be pretty easy; if you have a pre-assembled xwhatsit, then I think it's just a matter of installing it in lieu of the original controller, like so:

Unfortunately, my 3277 seems to be one of the original IBM beam springs, and the controller and pad card are on the same PCB, making it impossible to use an xwhatsit. :(

Beamsprings use a completely different protocol I think, so converter wouldn't do. You need a whole controller and with capsense xwhatsit is the only option (for now; there is some development on this front)

@emdude, perhaps you could pluck out the controller chip on that one, and connect xwhatsit with some ribbon cable to the pins? Not the nicest setup sure, and may involve some precision soldering, but maybe it's doable?

Got my 1398601 finally opened. One broken rivet, that's it. Was expecting much more. Am doing the bolt mod anyway since it feels off around the enter key.

I bolt modded my Model M, and I love it. It feels so fresh and responsive. I would advise anyone with a unsatisfactory BS experience to do this mod. I only had one broken rivet and it feels so much better nonetheless.

Very cool.
TBH, I dont think I noticed much of a difference.
I didnt use mine as a daily driver, but I had 20 broken rivets and never noticed a feel difference.

Potato pic of the new arrivals

M2 has some springs bent and two springs stretched out which would often actuate the switch even when keycap was not depressed, so I took them out. I'll need to get replacements to do the board justice. Quite an interesting board to say the least.

An IBM model M 1394428 terminal board. has some weird caps. not sure if it works. first i need to get another teensy... guess it would help if any documentation existed of it or if i could find its counterpart. I'm assuming the model number shows few results because it is english layout.

Bought two model Ms (and my first buckling spring boards) Thursday evening. I took an old mothballed machine to test them, waiting a PS/2 to USB converter...

I don't have a suitable 5.5.mm driver right now: cleaned both keysets, cases and top barrel plate, no broken rivets judging by sound and uniform feel. :)

The one I'm currently typing on is an ISO white logo model 1391413 with the French Canadian layout, made in Mexico and dated June 5th 1989.

The other one is a bit of an oddity around here: a Greenock board, white logo model 1391402, France French AZERTY, dated December 12th 1990. My plan is to convert it to the French Canadian layout, which is partway done. As you can see it is also missing a few keycaps; might get fancy and ask if they have any of those NOS Industrial cases left over...

Regards,

Darkshado

it looks like a modded 101 case cut into a ssk. notice the cuts on the top and bottom. Plus, the ssk didnt have such a large bezel at the top.

Yep. That's a cut case. And i made an error, so it's a bit too much cut, but luckily the nav cluster just fits. There's an FSSK PCB inside actually.

For some more cutting (and gluing), that's an M122 from a regular case put inside a F122-like bottom case from another M122, and covered with a top case from an actual F122 :)) I used the top case from M122 on my F122.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
