There were recent group buys with 3u spacebar, but this is the first one with Minila support. ;)

Congratulations, voodoo6k, on a successful group buy launch.

This is a very nice, understated set. I especially like the CP colour legends. I think this might just have to be my first ever group buy. :-)

There is however one thing that bothers me slightly; I was interested in the Numpad kit, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be full NorDeUK coverage for the Numpad, as the R4 "," key is missing from both those kits.

I tried searching the GMK Database for other sets with the CR/CP colour combination, but didn't have much luck. Most WoB sets seem to be CR/WS1, for example. Certainly the NorDeUK extensions. Does anyone know another GMK set where I could find an R4 "," key in such a colourway?  If not, I might have to forego the numpad kit. Either way, it's not a huge deal. I'm sure I'll be quite happy with the rest of this set.

Thanks for making it happen.

That's a very nice set, close to the thinkpad spirit.
I'm kind of sad that the French layout is not supported though. I usually don't mind as I'm touch typist, but for this one, I would have like it (essentially to brag at work!).

I'm not sure that you will be able to find a "," key for numpad. The difference between that and "." is quite small, that's why it's never (?) included.

I'm kind of sad that the French layout is not supported though. I usually don't mind as I'm touch typist, but for this one, I would have like it (essentially to brag at work!).

The French layout (AZERTY) is mostly used in France and Belgium so it wouldn't be able to pull enough numbers. Even in Canada the French Canadian layout is QWERTY.

Thank you for this amazing set, definitely all in on this one.

Nice to see this hit GB finally! GLWGB

Thanks, thanks!

If you can find a OG WOB french iso for the alphas, then you can make your own GMK Thinkcaps!

That's really a good idea, I've got to look into that !

For the few GB I've followed where there was a French layout, the numbers were extremly low. It's clearly a niche. Canadians use a modified qwerty, that allows to type letters with accent. Despite it's a smart layout, I couldn't get use to it...

Also these would be in CP colour just like Thinkcaps, if I'm not mistaken. I've been using the Canadian layout in different variants (legacy, multilingual, bilingual) since childhood and I'm quite thankful for QWERTY.

I added a new forum signature BB code.

Thanks to everyone who has joined already!

It follows Dixie's line of Circles deskmats. Take it or leave it ;)

I'm not a graphic designer, and my usual guy @OneCreativeMind is on hiatus. I like the Circles.

It's actually quite difficult to come up with an original design that's true to the IBM/Lenovo/TP heritage, while not infringing intellectual property.

Did Dixie Mech stop taking orders for the RGB mods? Its the only item in the group buy that I can't add to my cart.

::EDIT::
Well, never mind. I closed the tab, came here to post this and then followed the link on this page back to Dixie to try it again and this time it added to the cart. Either someone was faster than they had any right to be resolving the issue, or I must have had something cached oddly in my open tab.

Either way, about to pull that trigger. Great set!

GB progress update:

1. I've taken the decision to cancel the Ortho & 40's standalone set. It's something I insisted on and wanted to offer for a long time, but the current sales numbers (one week in) are too low. In fact, they include a (very kind) buyer who had committed to getting 30+ sets for their keyboard shop, so the actual number is even lower. :(

We had a long IC phase and many people signed our form. More than 1500 entries overall, with 365 for the Ortho set specifically. I tried something experimental despite my vendors' warnings, and it didn't work out. I'd rather have tried and failed than not give it a shot. I'm terribly sorry to the 20-some buyers who already bought the Ortho set, you will be refunded in full.

2. I remain very optimistic for the rest of the GB, with the TKL set already at more than half way to MOQ! The other kits are priced competitively. Thanks again to everyone who has joined this group buy. :)

Edit: now showing 40s/Ortho kit has been canceled.

Man I was really on the fence with this one as it was "simple" but it turns out that simple and classic just work in many circumstances.

Ordered a base kit since I was eyeballing GMK WoB but didn't need it right now. At least with Thinkcaps you get a classic Dolch with colored accents and that Thinkpad vibe can't be beat.

Wow. I wish I hadn't waited to purchase the Ortho/40s set. I didn't think it would matter if I bought it in the first week or the last. Sad!

Yakk.shop is myself and we're working on a smooth transition to another Canadian vendor, due to unexpected circumstances.

Edit: Deskhero.ca added to the crew. Welcome aboard!

So sad about the Ortho kit's death. Was going to try to get a couple other sets go to make up for it but its just not possible with my board. I was looking forward to modding a trackpoint onto it too  :-[

Ouch. Was planning to get both TKL and Ortho/40s kits next month...
I reckon the numbers would have picked up by the first week of Dec., but oh well.

There's a couple of buys that have done this recently, canned kits midway through a buy. It's kinda a crappy thing to do.

I was hoping to buy the Ortho/40s kit next month since I had so many things to buy this month(All the new 65%s and BFCM stuff.)
Now I kinda feel bad for not getting it sooner.

Yeah we're at around 430 base sets. I'll send the current numbers to @dvorcol for a nice graph.

The Ortho set being cancelled is purely a financial decision on my part. Usually, vendors will buy out kits. Look at Yuri R2, for example.

I had committed to buying the remainder of the Ortho sets. After week one, Ortho sold around half what was expected relative to TKL and other kits. The form data suggested that we needed around 1000 TKL base sets for Ortho to hit an MOQ of 250. A few days from the finish, we're still at around 500 TKL sets. While that's actually not bad, it's not enough for Ortho.

Consider that I'm not a full-fledged store with capital on hand. I was ready to buy a fair number of extras, with the help of a fellow keyboard store (not even part of this GB!). However, I'm simply not in a position to buy 100+ sets, ie. dropping [a large sum] one year in advance during a global pandemic. I took a chance and it didn't pan out.

Totally understandable. I've never run a GB but I can see there's much more to it than coming up with a compelling and original colorway, and producing some renders. Thanks for being a creator.

Is there not usually a huge surge in sales in the closing days of most group buys?  With 5 days still to go, these MOQ could be met?

Well, Ortho40s has been cancelled for weeks now if that's what you are talking about, hottrout. I was planning on buying it, actually. I suppose it would have been smart to make very clear that the Ortho40s is a maybe and that it depends a lot on first week sales. I guess, then a lot of people (including me) would have prioritized this and bought right away, and I am guessing we may have ended up with around 120 kits sold? Add extras to that, and we might be looking at 200 kits (pure conjecture right here), so that voodoo would still have had to spring for 50 kits. I guess it was a question for voodoo to leave Ortho40s open longer and still have to cancel it at the end because of lackluster sales, which would probably not have turned into additional TKL sales. I, as a result of all this, bought two bases, but just because I want to be able to switch out the kit after it's all shiny (and I got a 12% discount for BF on CandyKeys). However, I'm quite sad the board I was looking to fill with this set is no longer supported (Adélie).
In conclusion, to me, the only way Ortho40s would have made it is a much lower MOQ, maybe 100? But that would have meant (i guess) 20-30$ higher price... Not sure how many people would have taken that, I feel that overall this is getting much too low sales (e.g. comparing to the 80082, which is pretty and memey, but this one here is a true classic), so that is just reflected by what we are looking at.

This is the first GMK Groupbuy I participate in. Thing is: These thingys are tooo expensive (speaking of GMK GBs as a whole). Why? Well, because I am from Germany, and stubborn as ****, with the following reasoning: I can buy a whole ISO-DE Kit with all I need for ~100 Euros. Without all that ANSI-overhead. Without all these MOQ-Hasseling and such. If done right. And it was done right in the past (German Dolch GB, WoB@Candykeys, ...). So, wait and be patient. Be strong against every SUPERCOOL set (and heck are there LOT of cool ones). And I did this very well. Ignoring these subforum for most of the time, cause reasons. And then there was the newsletter from Candykeys. Thinkcaps? Good sets? No sending to the states and back to Heimat? And, fffs, no Drop (Drop is cancer for private GBs)? Well, you got me. Finally, my third GMK-Set. Well done, Sir, well done - it takes much to get me. I bow my stubborn head!

Also, what layout is that? Looks super weird, but I kind of want to try it. I really dig the spacebar/layer controls.

That's a Filco Minila. It's one of the first OEM compact keyboards that were available on the market. It's still fairly popular in East Asia.

Is Candykeys the best place to keep tabs on production status?

Sorry for the delay... Dixie Mech will be communicating with GMK so it's best to follow their social pages.

277/937 * 100 = 29.56 or 30% actually.

Referring to the fact that only 277 people ordered the numpad kit compared to 937 for the TKL kit.  This is a pointless observation to make on the basis that almost no keyboards designed and made by the community have a numpad.  In fact in the last year I don't remember anyone designing and running a GB for any full size keyboards.  Personally I would love to see some full size designs coming to the community and I also ave to say, that I almost always order the numpad kit when ordering, just in case.

Also interesting to note that NordeUK kits, although understandably lower,  were still significant and important for many people, myself included.

It feels like there has been at least one 1800 that ran in 2020? I don't like this layout so I don't follow it closely. And this one currently in IC: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=109390.0

Like you say virtually no customs include a numpad and I strongly prefer the cheaper base kit that will cover the really popular layouts 60, 65, TKL. Because then we might as well devolve into making these massive base kits to appease everyone.

I skipped on my fair share of 130/140/150 base kits even though I liked the design. At some point with so many sets running every month there is just no need to pay that much on already extremely expensive pieces of plastic.

I tend to agree that numpads are more popular than some people seem to think. Only reason why it's separate was to allow for two base sets (considering GMK pricing).

The extra R1 and media keys make the numpad kit more worthwhile as standalone and full-size; neutral colours also help in general.

To be honest, I always consider the most popular pre-built keyboards when designing kits. For example, in this case the K2 and for DSA Scientific the Vortex Race 3. Incidentally, these are both 75%.

Estimated shipping (for the US vendor) is November 2021 (Source: https://omnitype.com/blogs/timelines/gmk-thinkcaps). So, just lay low and be happy when you get a shipping notification. My personal realistic expectation is early next year. Peace!

+1 for rachel. honorable mention for roy (tears in the rain!). also, i think 2049 also holds up to repeated re-watches. and answers the question left hanging at the end of the original. brilliant the way gaff shows up in the sequel, made me smile. and you might like the three shorts made in connection with 2049 release to fill in more of the story, if you haven't already seen them  :thumb:

and voodoo: my apologies for the brief thread-jack!

azzipa, thanks for the link, I had not seen them but I had heard of them.  Just watched them and they are great.  Years ago I bought a set of the whiskey glasses that Deckard uses in the original movie, I should dig them out for a drink and watch 2049 again soon.

As an avid ThinkPad enjoyer I am bummed I missed this one

There will likely be some extras available when it finally drops.

Ja, see here: https://omnitype.com/blogs/timelines/gmk-thinkcaps

However, don't believe the date there, since the info from GMK is relatively old. Lots of other sets that ran before ThinkCaps have since been pushed farther back, so my optimistic guess for ThinkCaps would be late Q1 2022 (like March), my pessimistic guess is well into Q2 2022. Just conjecture, though.

Best,
Johannes

Hi sefixmm,

We did round 1 of samples and will be doing round 2.

That's about it for now, thanks for asking. ;)

Hey everyone,

It's time to send in the graphics for the novelties. After months of not thinking about this set, a fresh look made me realize that the media keys* should probably be left-aligned.

Most GMK/Cherry legends are left-aligned, with the exception of the win and menu keys. For cohesion, I think left-aligning is best.

What do you think? Poll: https://forms.gle/BNbWhSYEfLJMjTZv5

Left-aligned vs centered

PS. I had to slightly alter the icons in order to meet GMK's requirements for minimum line thickness. I went with the open source Font Awesome play/pause and volume icons.

(*) Only the icons shown above will be modified. Dots remain the same.

I prefer centered, but in reality, both are great.

Edit, after looking at a keyboard with a GMK set, everything is align on left, so, yes, left is better  :)

Yes, any pics of the sample ?

Blue was matched to a new T420 keyboard. Here are the samples compared to a Lenovo Preferred Pro:

Show Image

In reality the colours will seem darker.

Got my accent kit in today and was quite disappointed. I know you said it will seem darker in reality but I believe this is a departure from the thinkpad blue entirely. This picture is with me drowning it with light to make it as bright as possible. Any normal or natural light it is still very dark and I see it as more of a dark grey than a blue as shown in the second picture. Not sure if the accents kit ended up with a different blue than the base kit pictures from above but I could not get it even close to that hue of blue.

I found the blue to be very subtle in shade, but it seems pretty close to the classic Thinkpad blue.

I don't disagree... the blue colour behaves strangely under low light.

We got samples of several RALs and Pantones, but in the end we matched the blue Enter key from a new T420 keyboard.

It definitely looks better on a board, but I'm still disappointed that not everyone is happy, particularly those who don't have a Thinkpad to compare to.

Came here to say I am also disappointed in the blue. It’s not saturated enough, and it’s darker than it should be.

Anyone else still waiting for their order from CandyKeys? Apparently the Rama caps are either lost, or still in transit, which is holding up those orders.

Although the blue is a little muted, I really like the overall set and the colours.  It was a long time coming but very much worth the wait.

Has anyone in the US who ordered the RGB mods from CandyKeys received their order? My order was "shipped" about 3 weeks ago, however, there is no tracking.

Yes I am in the UK.  Did you order anything else along with the caps?  Sometimes this can delay the order if something else is not ready to dispatch.
