G80-11802LPAJA: Before and After Cleaning
« on: Thu, 12 February 2015, 09:11:31 »
I have Sturmfrau's G80-11802LPAJA for cleaning and retr0brighting since I have too much free time and love all things keyboard.

He picked this up when his office did some space clearing.

The keyboard works but the Pause Break is acting weird.  It actuates but doesn't stay actuated when the key is held down.  Average time is 7-8ms using EK's Switch Hitter.  It might need a little cleaning or the soldering needs to be reflowed.

I can't test the trackball right now since my mobo only has one PS2 port and i think both need to be plugged in for it to work.

Anyway, here are some before pictures.

This is why you shouldn't wrap cables around a keyboard.

Bonus pic!

Slapped on a GMK red Esc and some RGB Modifiers!  I didn't have a green 1x shift so I used the Fn. :p

Same here...when testing it, I kept hitting the below N and m.

Oh yeah, uploaded the pics of the inside and a comparison of the key caps.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is surface cleaning the case with soap, a toothbrush, and a sponge.  Then hopefully I can start retr0brighting first thing on Monday morning under the sun.

That is a cool board, are you going to do anything funky with it or just get it cleaned up?

No, nothing funky since it's not mine.

I offered to clean it up for Sturmfrau as an excuse to get my paws on the keyboard and take photos to document it. :))

Nice job. I'd love to know more about how you retrobrited the case.

Thanks man!

So...on retr0briting, I only have one pic since I forgot to take pictures so please bear with all the text. :p

I decided to soak both the upper and lower halves of the case in a single bath to ensure that they would lighten to the same extent and match.

I used:
  • A large plastic bin
  • 2 liters of 10 volume / V10 / 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 500ml of 20 volume / V20 / 6% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 scoop OxiClean
  • Enough tap water to submerge the cases in the bin (estimated at 4-6 liters)
  • three drinking glasses to hold the cases down

I put the case in the bin, weighed them down with the glasses and poured in the hydrogen peroxide.  Added tap water until the cases were submerged.  Added the OxiClean and swished the mixture back and forth in the bin.  THE MIXTURE WILL BUBBLE AND TURN YELLOW.  It looks like watered down mountain dew.

There wasn't enough direct sunlight outside so I started by an upstairs window.

Here's a picture:

Yeah, I tried to retr0bite an iPhone case...it didn't work.

I checked it every twenty minutes and mixed the solution.  After forty minutes I found a big enough spot of direct sunlight outside and took the bin outside...aaaaand I promptly forgot my phone and camera.

Outside in the direct sunlight it started to bubble A LOT more and become MORE yellow.  Forty more minutes in the tropical sun and it was done. :thumb:
