Keyboard EROSION?
« on: Wed, 25 March 2020, 15:16:53 »
Hello Geekhack,

My keyboard randomly stopped working after a Windows update. It wouldn't read my Ducky one 2 mini. No lights, no typing. I deleted the firmware and re downloaded from Ducky website still no luck. Plugged into different computers still no luck. So I took it apart and found this. Is corroded? Shorted out? Its pretty much new. I bought it for Christmas and have no memory of spilling anything on it.

Have you tested on another system?
If it worked before the update and you did nothing, odds are the update dumped the drivers it was using. Win10 did this to my 3d printer, it updated and could no longer find much less load a driver, it was one of the final nails in the coffin for Windows for me.

The other option is a bit more ominous, you had a power spike that fried it or a Windows driver physically damage it, which actually can happen, particularly with something not using mainstream firmware. One of the more common ones is drivers forcing monitors to run out of spec (refresh rates).

First thing I would do is test on another system and stop using it on the one that broke it until you can get it working again, otherwise you may be running in circles trying to fix something that isn't broke. You also may be doing more harm than good as a bad flash could brick it and it clearly has a problem with that system.

And clean off that corrosion (wipe with alcohol and let dry). If it survived what did that, while there's a slim chance, odds are it's not the fault here. The timing is convenient.

Thank you for your information. I have cleaned off the corrosion and tried plugging it into another computer. Still nothing. Anything else I could do? I have emailed ducky support and have yet to hear from them.

Look it over with a magnifying glass, retouch those spots with an iron (will void warranty), and start testing with a voltmeter.
