Pumpkin Carving Contest [LIVE]
« on: Wed, 14 October 2015, 21:45:00 »
As mentioned in the Pumpkin Carving thread, we will be hosting a Pumpkin carving contest now through November 1st.

Rules:

1. We will select 10 of the top creations from the group.
2. Your pumpkin doesn't have to be the best in terms of artistic talent, it just needs to show you really put effort and thought into it :)
3. Post a photo of your pumpkin from different angles - you must include a piece of paper with your geekhack name and the date on it in all of the photos
4. We will then post a poll with the top 10, and the 3 designs with the most votes will be the final winners.

The Loot:

1x Multi-color Grumpkin in topre or mx stem type

Just cause I have the tools does not mean I know what to do with them.  ;)

Having NOT done any pumpkin carving - hey, I am in Asia and it's not a thing - I presume, just using a kitchen knife is not enough and could be hazardous, right? And how do you dry the inner part after the innards are taken out? I just don't want it to grow mucus, that will be disgusting. But I think it will be a fun project with the girls... except, I don't think we sell BIG pumpkin here. Alas!!

For anything with detail you will want to use a relatively small knife.  If you only have small pumpkins they will probably be harder than the ones we get for halloween over here, so mind your fingers.  Our halloween pumpkins are basically inedible and are really only good for carving (which is kind of a shame really when you think about it).

You don't really dry out the inside.  You take out the seeds and then use a spoon or an icecream scoop to get rid of all the stringy stuff and then you go to town on the outside.  :)

Ahhh, I didn't know that! They should be relatively cheaper then as they are probably rejects. Our pumpkins here are really small, think coconut or watermelon, so I am not even sure how practical this project will be for me. Looks like I need to do some grocery shopping this weekend with the kids.

I carved a pumpkin today.  I don't really have different angles, but I do have different lighting.

Light:

Medium:

Dark:

I used a rotozip tool to define the letters into the pumpkin and then put some glitter on them for effect. The rest was carved with your traditional cheepo pumpkin carving tools. I put two sets of micro lights inside it to light it up (those work really well!). Glue dots were used to affix the spiders.

Now I have to roast up them seeds!

Here's my entry. Have not carved a pumpkin in my life and decided to start this project with the kids. Unfortunately, I'm able to entice the interest and loyalty of my 4 year old. The elder one decided to go out with her mother.

Absolutely! She was so excited and photo bombed to her grandparents via whatsapp.

What we did was super primitive - I saw those craving in youtube - they are just superb! One girl even use drilling bits to drill holes to make flower patterns. Its just so amazing! No way we can compare to what you guys will be coming up with but the experience is definitely priceless :)

Good work Belfong, the slightly ragged edges and imperfect shapes make for a scarier pumpkin and that's the point :thumb:

One thing though - you're supposed to have your name in all the pics to enter so you might want to take some more!

Thanks suicidal! I'll take some more photos with the identification.

Interestingly, on the imgur album, I've had comments at how dangerous it was to use a scissor to carve. I didn't realise the hazards!

@Bad - beautiful zombie pumpkin! Wow, you are so talented!

I can't believe you used scissors! That seems difficult. Turned out great though, nice detail.

You gotta be dead to be mummified, then if you've moved enough to disturb your wrapping you must be undead therefore it's a zombie as well as a mummy?  This is an attempt to cover for my previous stupidity, can't even use the excuse that it was late when I posted :-[

Sad news, carvers.  I attempted to bring my pumpkin inside today to ponder a carvin' and to my surprise it was bruised (?) and one entire side was mushed in on itself.  :(  I've only had the dang thing for a day!  :|

Definitely no carving for me - at least for now.  I may be acquiring another 'kin this coming weekend.

First time ever carving pumpkins and new to GH (have been a lurker for quite a while now)! I wanted to be different and do a 3D pumpkin carving instead of cutting straight through. Took way longer than I expected and was pretty hard. Super happy with the end result though.

Have some in progress pictures as well as a timestamp and final form!

Here's my entry - first pumpkin I've done without the help of my parents when I was a kid. It's a lot harder than I thought! My hole on top was too small so scooping out the mess was a bit interesting, lots of fun though!  :)

UPDATE: My pumpkin died after 4 days??.. RIP
It looked scarier at least. To the trash it goes!

As you can probably tell, I'm a professional pumpkin carver in my time off.  Who needs all these fancy pumpkin tools when you have a pocket knife and a rusty spoon?

Feeling that it needed a little something else, I tried to light it with a candle.  That wasn't working, so I grabbed a white 2x3x4mm LED, attached a resistor to it, and attached it to a 9v battery to make it light up.

2. Your pumpkin doesn't have to be the best in terms of artistic talent, it just needs to show you really put effort and thought into it :)

You should still submit! I am not the most artistic either and might carve a pumpkin just for fun :P

Well, if you want to "cheat", you can do a pumpkin stencil.  I think some of the pumpkins in here may have done that.  I drew on mine with a sharpie, then went to town with my bigass pocket knife.

I've never really bothered to put much effort into carving a pumpkin before... tried to do this freehand. It took way too much effort and I think I could have still done better, oh well!

Somehow I was kinda expecting shark teeth or something :))
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

With any luck I'll be getting a pumpkin tonight to work on tomorrow! Kinda excited though worried how much of a mess it's going to be haha... Anyone got any tips for emptying one out?

Thx alot baldgye!  :)

I just used a big spoon for the emptying part which worked quite well actually.
Emptying wasn't as messy as I expected, but its still the worst part... =)

Id recommend covering your workspace in newspaper xD

Could only get a small pumpkin and this was my first time attempting to "peel" as well as cut holes, it was going pretty well until I cut my finger half way through doing the nose so only the teeth are as intended, but nevermind.

Nowhere near the quality of some entries but I don't care as it was fun and I have a bowl of seeds to roast (another first for me :D)

Man, there are some really awesome pumpkins in here!

This is my first time carving, and I just picked a Jake the dog from Adventure Time. Nothing amazing but I had a great time, and a lot of pumpkin seeds to bake (yum!).

EDIT: Not sure why this one was uploaded upside down but I'm going to leave it like that..

Not sure we can compete with some of the entries here, but my girlfriend and I took the opportunity to carve some pumpkins for the context and added them to her parents' pumpkins this afternoon in preparation for the neighborhood children tonight. Very traditional styles, but it was a ton of fun; she picked the pumpkins and cleaned them, and I did the carving. See if you can tell which two we did and which three her parents did  :p

I call the big one "The Vandal", guess the inspiration  :))

I guessed "The Vandal" was one of yours but not the other one.  Looking again three do share a style of nose so I should have got the other one too but I'll settle for 50% :thumb:

I've been trying to upload these for a while now...

But I see someone has made a better version.

I spent forever carving my niece's and nephews pumpkins. Then drove home and carved mine.

It was gonna be a Harry Potter thing (my costume) but then free handing is difficult and was tired. Bro fist is easier, but I'm no good at letters

Also I don't know how these picture actually look (on mobile and just uploading)

I have no idea how you all made these. Everyone who submitted deserves to win. The talent here is shocking.
