I can't seem to put the board into bootloader mode to install a custom layout. I unplug it, hold the escape key then connect the USB cable but it just seems to turn on as normal and the QMK toolbox doesn't pick it up as an available HID.

Anyone able to offer some advice?
I don't have mine to confirm yet, but reset should be Fn (key next to left arrow) + Esc.

Odd. It appeared to work briefly as QMK toolbox picked it up but Windows then did its "installing device drivers etc" then toolbox lost it. Since then I've not been able to get it to work again.
I think you need to do it while plugged in, rather than while plugging in.

That's what I did after your suggestion. It's as if it wiped the escape binding once windows installed the drivers for the board or something.

I'll try again later today

This is all very odd. I connected the keyboard to my macbook and it picked-up it was available to flash there. I tried with my hex file (created from config.qmk.fm) and it errored with "see --debug=51 or greater for more information". After that the board was stuck in bootloader mode (even after being disconnected and reconnected). I had to load the default hex file back into it to get the board working again but now it won't go back into bootloader mode and the macbook doesn't pick it up either.

I've never gotten along with QMK :(

Ok I've figured out the bootloader mode issue you may all want to keep in mind.

It appears that the firmware pre-loaded on the pcb uses the mod+esc to enter bootloader mode but if you load the default firmware from git it changes it to holding escape during connecting your keyboard.

Now I just need to build a hex file that actually works....

Got my Space65 yesterday! Was super excited... so excited, in fact, that I soldered all my switches on without testing the PCB. Turns out my `\`, up, and down keys don't function (not even with tweezers on the PCB). I have a second PCB which does appear to work, but all of my switches (and thus my plate) are now on the first PCB. Re-flashing the firmware doesn't fit, and I can't reset the EEPROM without getting this error:

Code: [Select]
>>> dfu-programmer atmega32u4 flash --force --eeprom /Applications/QMK Toolbox.app/Contents/Resources/reset.eep
    0%                            100%  Programming 0x80 bytes...
    [ X  ERROR
Memory write error, use debug for more info.

Soooo I guess what I'm saying is make sure everyone checks their PCBs before you start soldering, because I just got totally hosed.

Sorry to hear this. Not sure what's caused the issues with the keys, but I've been informed the eeprom issue may be due to QMK Toolbox - apparently you should try being on version 0.0.9?

Odd as the hex files generated from there wouldn’t flash for me. Had to create one the old fashioned way (with help!)

Okay, I've solved the problem thanks to some input from some folks on Discord.

For anyone else that experiences this, if you are using screw-in stabs, the screws will short on the backspace key, which will prevent the pipe, up, and down keys from functioning. Here is a picture that highlights the issue:

If you have a thin plastic or rubber washer, that should work, as would kapton or electrical tape. Once I resolved this short, my three keys started functioning again.

I am. Seems like the brass plate is just a hair too thick. After screwing the brass plate in, I can feel the brass plate is slightly higher than the top plate (especially in the corners) by running my fingers across the edges where the brass plate meets the top plate. When I screw the top and bottom plates together with the brass plate installed, there is definitely a slight gap between the top and bottom plates.

Has anyone had any luck with the brass plate? Mine also doesn’t sit flush with it. Along the edges there is a ridge in a few places maybe from the machining? Since the ridges are on the back side of the plate I was planning on taking a grinder or file to them tomorrow to knock them off. Not sure if the plate is too thick overall or if the ridges will solve it.

Update: the plate is not brass. I ground the ridge down and then the brass dipped coating chipped away and now it’s all peely looking. Maybe it’s copper underneath? I can’t tell

The plate is PVD coated brass. The coating you see is PVD, then you have the raw brass underneath.

Quite a few people have holepunched/cut their feet to allow access to screws, from what I've seen.

It’s very subtle. since it’s a sandwich plate when you fully install it and then screw the case together it seems ok except if you look at the side you can see the brass plate showing through the seam
