Differences between Realforce 86U and 87U
« on: Wed, 28 July 2010, 22:31:30 »
Now that I've gotten the feel of a decent mechanical keyboard (I now have two "Majestouch Tenkeyless Tactile Touch" Brown Cherry keyboards: http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=filco_keyboards,majestouch_87key&pid=fkbn87meb), I've been bitten by the bug and have gained a decent understanding of the art and magic of mechanical keyboards.   That is, except for one piece of wisdom - what the heck is the difference between the Realforce 86U and 87U?

Here's the 86U: http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless&pid=rf_se0500

I can find this answer anywhere.

Thanks,

Dan.

Blue LEDs.  The 87U has Blue LEDs in the key caps for CAPS Lock and NumLock.

The 86u lets you swap Ctrl and Alt, so you can press Ctrl with your thumb. This could be really useful depending on which one you use more frequently.

I believe this is the case.  Also, the 86U does not have the virtual numpad; it's more like the Filco Tenkeyless this way.

IIRC, the 86U has no lock lights.

No, I mean Ctrl and Alt, unless Elitekeyboards made a mistake on their website:

ok, sorry, I thought you meant the actually keycaps. Yeah, the dip switches do make that possible.

Thanks.   It sounds like there's nothing of significance (for me) between the two.   I'm happy with my two Filco's.   Of course, it might be nice to try out an 86U...  :yo:

somebody knows if the 87U will be back on elitekeyboard some day*?
it seems better than the 86U to me, with the LEDs, the pseudo-numpad, etc…
Hoping to hear from you again, your dearest friend, sam113101.

Right you are.  I got a 103u from elite that had this configuration, many argue with me because it's supposed to be 35/45/55 but that's what I got.  The Realforce 101 was a 30/45/55 board and I wondered if my 103u was mistakenly fitted with 101 domes.

I never noticed the 86u was like that.  For me, I strongly prefer 35/45

The box for my 103U says 30/45/55 (Elitekeyboards shows the same).  Maybe I didn't quite get what you were trying to say.

Ah, got it.  I thought it was a little odd that they would drop the weight all the way down to 30g. on those keys.
