Nice cheap mechanical keyboard that doesn't break?
« on: Sat, 17 December 2011, 21:04:37 »
Well christmas is near and I am thinking about buying a mechanical keyboard. I am looking for something cheap (Below $100, lower the better) that has a "noisy" feedback when you hit the keys. I am very addicted the the clicky noises it makes when you hit the keyboard. I've heard about the Regular Blackwidow that costs about $79 but I don't want something that just looks good but has a poor build quality.

Please post some suggestions below!

I live in U.S.A if that matters from where I buy from.

Thanks alot! :frog:

I will sell you my ABS M1 Gaming Keyboard, the thing is very sturdy, one of the best feeling switches I have used but I just got tired of the "click" sound that you seem to be addicted to.

I wrote a review of it here:

Review Link

Used it for a month until the clicking got to me and my wife (then gf)!

It's no longer available on newegg but if you read the reviews, the main complaint was that it was loud.  Now, it is most certainly clicky but I don't know about loud.

Newegg Link

Anyway, I kept it in the original box and it's in pristine condition and I'm never going to use it again, it's yours for $50 shipped CONUS, just PM me for Paypal address to pay and it's on its way.

I am very interested in this, is it dirty under the keycaps? Dusty? I don't mind a few dust but I don't want it to be a dust storm behind those keys.
How old is it?

How about Unicomp? You can't get noisier and more durable than that. It doesn't look pretty though.
That's basically brand new Model M clone so you can be sure it will last about the same as original IBM keyboards made in 1980s some of which are still in daily use today.

No dust.  Like I said, I used it for about a month and then put it back in its box and shoved it in my closet.

For all intents and purposes, it's new!  Bought it January 2009.

And if you want cheaper, an IBM Model M. $50 used on Ebay in most cases.

Second the recommend for the Model M.  If you want tactile and clicky, the only boards in the same league are the older/harder to find IBM boards, but the Model M is the OG 101-key layout so it won't feel odd to switch back and forth with other more pedestrian keyboards and it is still compatible with whatever PC you're using (maybe you need a PS/2 to USB adapter, but that should be it)

If it weren't for the racket, I'd probably still be driving an M daily.  For some reason people in an office seem to think that a keyboard should be quiet, hence my subsequent foray into Cherry-land.
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

Just to clarify, unicomp makes a few keyboards based on the model m.
Model M is the original and cheaper, but I'd prefer a new keyboard under warranty.

I think if you use the definition of a mechanical keyboard that doesn't break and look up the term, you will find the model m. Barring a hall effect keyboard, finding something more durable would be totally impossible.

So I easily also recommend unicomp.
