I have the first version of the 6G. It's a OK keyboard. But I think 7G is overpriced, has a huge, plastic palm rest, and some strange key shapes.

Your HP, with regards to Ctrl/Fn/Win/Alt/Space, is using the layout that Dell had used for ages. I'm not sure if they still do, but I believe they were the first to use it (in the laptop world of course), and used it consistently for a very long time. Despite quite different actual keyboards, my Latitude CSx has the exact same layout as my Inspiron 630m, and I've seen older Latitudes and newer Inspirons with the same as well.

It works really well. The space between Ctrl and Alt is approximately comparable to a desktop keyboard so you can use Ctrl + Alt shortcuts without looking for the keys first.

As partially Danish I tip my hat to my compatriots for their excellent design work. Hopefully this board comes down in price (if it hits $80 then I think I can convince a lot of OCNers away from the G110). The short right shift key might be a problem for some. I was planning to get a 6gv2, but then I noticed I tend to hit right shift here:



So I went ahead and got a 7g with micro backspace instead.

I wish I'd figured out before buying two full size boards, that I really should never get a full sized board, ever again.  I need my num pad embedded or detachable.  Really, I haven't used a num pad for gaming in ages, though.  I use my numpad for work, calculator & atrophied number row laziness.  I'm glad the steel series is out there, because there's definitely some people for me to recommend it too.  

I'm really used to the fat enter, from my years of silicone roll up silliness.  I have to admit, I'd have problems using that small shift, I noticed that I barely tag the corner of the right shift.  However, I know from experience, that I'm actually fine with a regular one key sized backspace.  In summary older layout worked better for me, than the new one.

I like my Filco ansi layout, better, though.

I don't use right shift. I might have learned to use it along with proper touch typing but apparently Cherry Blacks (I ordered this board) aren't the best for touch typing. I'll still give it a shot.

I gotta say, when I move the "WASD" gaming cluster to use the numeric keypad, I totally missed what the big deal was with NKRO and the WASD cluster.  It just works fine on all keyboards on the numeric keypad.

Totally contradicts my experience. Being la lefty, I check that with every keyboard I get my hands on. Three numpad keys in two rows didn't work with any of dozens of boards I tried except true NKRO-boards. I've heard it's possible, but it's certainly not common.

I have tried the blues and browns, blues were too loud for me, and the browns were too light. I like to rest my fingers on the keyboard, and i dont like pressing keys by mistake. Currently use a tarantula, probably would have something different if i found geekhack earlier.

Ignoring the dead key, how is the board?

I have impressions in the thread but I definitely miss it now that it's gone. Can't wait for the replacement because this G15 feels like **** compared to it. Things I like:

- It feels solid. Very solid.
- Cherry MX Black switches are very smooth. After a day or two, unless you hate them immediately, you won't be able to go back to using tactile switches.
- The font on the lettering is a nice and legible size.
- It's very minimalistic. No wasted space on the board.
- Lack of wrist-wrest is very comfortable.
- Full NKRO if you use the PS2 adapter so that's good.
- The LEDs for the lock keys are a nice color and not bright.
- The media keys work well and lack of left Windows key is great.

  I respect that tactile mechanicals aren't a part of your background.  Plus you're gaming over typing, not typing over gaming, so it makes sense.  Are you saying if you ever feel the blacks are too tiring, your only hope is cherry reds?

I guess that's right about the reds. I haven't tried mechanicals with tactile bumps so I guess that was a pretty bold statement for me to make, you're right. I should have said rubber domes. I still don't think I would like tactile bumps a whole lot though after how much I liked the blacks. Part of what I like about them is that they're tough to press. It's hard to describe. Have you ever tried pushing an object down against the current of a constant, fast stream of air? The object is always being pushed back up with a sort of smooth, elastic and untiring force. That's what black switches feel like to me. Literally like typing with a smooth stream of air resisting my keypresses.

The aspects of the blacks that make them the best choice for gaming do not necessarily make them the worst for typing. Typing on it isn't necessarily bad, just different. Foreign. Awkward. Uncomfortable might be too strong. Unnatural describes it a bit better. People still like typing on blacks but because it feels so unnatural, the number of people that don't like them for typing outweighs the number that managed to like it.

I know they are not anything like the worst for typing, unless you've got an RSI prescription for low force boards only.  I'd take a board with cherry blacks over rubber domes, cherry ML, scissor switches, cherry blues (my audible issue) and probably some others that haven't came to mind.

The pipe key being moved to a weird spot for that gigantico enter key kills it for me.

Although it does remind me of something... the IBM Selectric II!

It took me about a day to get used to, and when I had to RMA the keyboard, I keep missing the enter key on my replacement G15 because it's not gigantico like the 6Gv2. Still, way too much wasted space for a single key.

A bigger enter key will probably work for me.

On the other hand, I just realized they moved the '\'  key to the bottom, that may be a problem =/ A remapping wont solve this issue.

Yeah. The larger enter key takes the space of the \ key and as a result right shift had to be shrunk to fit it there. Not that big of a deal for me but I do like having / and right shift adjacent.

I do type || or |= quite allot, this will take some  getting used to. will feel different as compared to my laptop.
