Ordering: Custom double-shot OCN ALPS key
« on: Wed, 21 April 2010, 18:54:26 »
Do you own an ABS M1 or other Alps-compatible mechanical keyboard? Do you love OCN and want to show it to the world? Here's your chance!

This is what you'll see on your Esc keys (or other keys, such as the arrows or WASD) when you order a custom OCN keycap.

What is it?
This is a keycap for Alps compatible mechanical keyboards such as the ABS M1, Dell AT101W, and Filco Zero, bearing the OCN flame in black and white. This is a custom order from Fentek Plastics, and they are some of the highest quality keycaps money can buy. They are made from impact-resistant ABS plastic, using a double-shot injection molding technique that offers the highest contrast and clarity possible on keyboard keycaps. These keys are so durable they should last the better part of a century before fading or otherwise wearing down.

Will it work on my Logitech/Microsoft/Razer or Cherry MX or IBM buckling spring keyboard?
Unfortunately no. The keycaps are compatible only with Alps-style switches. Many keyboards have used these switches; the most common in use on this forum are the ABS M1, Dell AT101W (and variants), and Filco Zero. The keycaps can be modified to fit Cherry MX switches, but it takes some work. We may do another run for Cherry MX switches some time in the future.

Do I get anything else?
You'll get a nice certificate of authenticity with some basic info on the key and mechanical keyboards. Also a padded envelope with a stamp, and free tickets to heaven*.

*not actually true

Does it come in colors other than black and white?
Not right now, but soon! Fentek charges an additional fee for color changes, which would drive up the price for everyone if we offered multiple colors on the first run. Since black and white were most popular this will be the first, and cheapest, run. If this is successful we will do special edition colored keys, for a greater price. Speaking of...

How much do they cost?
The keys cost $6.00 each (including shipping). I tried my best to see if I could get it under $5.00, but there's no way with shipping costs. This is still an excellent value for the quality of the keycaps and the community spirit they represent.

How can I order?
Simply send $6.00 per keycap to Paypal account mikeandrewp@gmail.com with the message "I want x keycaps" (x being the number you paid for).

I will get the key, right?
We need orders for fifty keycaps for this to be a reality. I think we can do it if everyone with an Alps board makes an order. I'll also be placing orders at several other sites. If the minimum of fifty is not met and I can't make up the difference, your money will be refunded to you in full. You have my word.

When can I expect to receive my key?
In approximately four to six weeks. Three to four weeks for Fentek to fit it into their manufacturing, then a week to ship to me, then a week to ship to y'all. This from the instant we reach quota, which shouldn't take too long hopefully

;)

Anything else?
Yes. I'm not making any money on this; in fact, I expect I'll lose money, definitely if I have to pony up to make the last few orders to 50. I would very much appreciate any donations to help cover shipping costs. Just send it to the aforementioned paypal with message "Have a brewskie" or, alternatively, "Donation", and you will have my eternal gratitude (protip: send your donation as separate from your order so I don't get confused).

Anyway, get to ordering! This is a deal of a lifetime, and these keycaps will never be this cheap again!

I don't have an Alps board in regular use, but out of curiosity, will you take international orders and would there be additional cost?

Also is it a white logo on black key, something like this?

It would look like that, yes, that's a very good rendition. :)

To the UK should be $5+$5.45= US$10.45 or £6.80

Having some trouble with OCN moderators though... The sales section moderator apparently can't read more than a paragraph into a thread before deciding it's against the rules.

Do you want our shipping addresses in the paypal message? Or do you plan to collect those later by email?

When you send money for goods your address is attached. No harm in including it in the message though.

I was planning on sending $$$ as a gift so the he wouldn't get hit with paypal fees. I'm not sure if the address info shows up in that case.

Yes, as a gift please, and include the shipping address. Those who don't include it and/or send it as a gift I guess I'll have to send an email to confirm a shipping address.

Yeah, when I got a little closer to my monitor (I sit fairly far back), I could see them.  It was still a good job, though.

10% of the way there!

Hey, if anyone feels like getting, oh, about 80-90 to fill in every standard sized key cap on their board, feel free to do so. It would knock the price down to ~$3/key. :)

It stops it from being bumped.

He didn't even read it. He saw the word "order" and "OCN" in the same sentence in another thread, and closed the ordering thread within a minute, and the vote thread within two minutes of that.

It's pissing me off. At least Manyak has said he'll put in a good word.

What a crock of ****. *headdesk*

Hmm...for ALPS...

Wouldn't be interested myself but I have a friend who might be. Doesn't do the whole mechanical keyboard thing (I've tried) but he might like a keycap just to have one anyway, and he's on OCN. He'll be in touch if he's interested when I tell him.
