A topic after my own heart, I love horror films! Some of my favourites are The Shining, The Ring, and The Thing. Also a massive fan of the Alien and Predator franchises, although I think those aren't really pure horror.
The movies that are really dark, and you can't see notin' and something jumps out at you really loud, those are super scary..
I've yet to find a scary movie with much substance that is scary..
I suppose if it were narrated too well, and coherent, then it'd cease to be scary..
I suppose really distorted faces are still kinda scary..
Yeah, the original Alien was quite horror-y as well. Amazing film, that. Although I also loved Aliens.A topic after my own heart, I love horror films! I'd say the original Alien was for sure a horror movie, but after that they were more action oriented. Predator I'd agree, but still great movies!
The shining is one of my all time favorite movies as well, the build up and suspense is unreal, not to mention the Kubrick visuals.
The movies that are really dark, and you can't see notin' and something jumps out at you really loud, those are super scary..They are neither true horror NOR are they scary. All they do is startle you. It's not frightening, just annoying if anything. All the best horror films manage without it.
Rest in peace to your discussion thread. It seems as though tp4tissue has discovered it at its inception.
What a true horror story.
Watch "Hush" on Netflix -- leans towards the thriller side, but man -- its very good!
"A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence
when a masked killer appears at her window."
also "The Den" on Netflix is freaky af :-[
"While studying the habits of web cam chat users from the apparent safety of her own home,
a young woman's life begins to spiral out of control after witnessing a grisly murder online."
In all fairness, I've been watching horror from such a young age (I first saw The Fly and Hellraiser 2 at age 8) that I don't really get frightened anymore watching horror films. Some horror video games can be much more potent than films, though.
Yeah, the rest of the series went downhill rather quickly. 1 and 2 definitely stand out, they're pretty amazing, the awful special effects notwithstanding xD .In all fairness, I've been watching horror from such a young age (I first saw The Fly and Hellraiser 2 at age 8) that I don't really get frightened anymore watching horror films. my first was "I Know What You Did Last Summer" followed closely by Scream 1 and 2, so im partial to the slashers haha. Hellraiser 1 and 2 are amazing movies though, imo by far the best in th series.

Well it wasn't CGI, but it wasn't very convincing either :p . 1 and 2 had some of my favorite effects ever though! I always loved to 70s - 80s practical effects. Beats cgi any day.

I recently went through a lot of old Hammer films, the ones with Christopher Lee as Dracula, and as far as "classic monsters" go, those are some of the best I've seen. Peter Cushings is the best Dr. Frankenstein ever put to film.
also, DudeSnail, if you're not a member of Cinemageddon, what are you doing with your life? Based on some of the **** you've been posting, you would love it there.
Horror movie junkie here.
I watch horror movies since I was a kid (like 5 years old).
It's about 15 years I try to watch just what is worth it: I don't want to waste time on terrible movies, basically if a movie scores less than 6 on IMDB I pass to another one.
Nice thread, I am also a big horror fan, sadly I saw till today almost all good horror movies (I know so far), I am hungry after new stuff. I also love to watch splatter movies, gore movies, all the funny stuff :D
ok, I forget to mention my GF and I love booth horror and splatter movies, the films I didn't saw have she in most cases already seen (its funny on our first date we watched two splatter movies). We booth rape and revenge movies but there are not such many of them.Nice thread, I am also a big horror fan, sadly I saw till today almost all good horror movies (I know so far), I am hungry after new stuff. I really love the Shining, such a good book too. I've also watched Psycho which was pretty suspenseful. Another one is the Exorcist, though I have to say I wasn't horrified or scared, but really intrigued by the priest. TBH I don't really like movies that are too gory, I remember I recently watched a gorey one on the plane, and it just made me very confused...
Silence of the lambs watched last night. disturbing af. hannibal is a decent followup but not quite as disturbing
I liked the conjuring 1&2 and Annabelle also decent.
I need to watch more of these movies

Event Horizon - Hell is only a word; where we're going is much much worse.
1408 - It's an evil f'in room!
The Conjuring
The Conjuring II (both are the true story the Lorraine Warren wouldn't talk about until after her husband had passed)
i'm going to watch some of these :thumb:
Re-watched a bunch of the old Hellraiser films again recently; man, those films just remain good. I can't think of anything out there that's like Hellraiser. It's not the type of horror film I usually watch as it's not particularly scary, but the universe it's set in and the atmosphere is somehow really compelling. Back home I even have one of those puzzle box props for on my desk (a cheap one). I keep wishing I'd brought it with me D: .
Yes, the first two ones are definitely my favourites too, 3 and 4 were a bit weaker. Still fun though. Personally I like the second one the best, it's absolutely intense, and it takes the lore to a different level.Re-watched a bunch of the old Hellraiser films again recently; man, those films just remain good. Im in the process of writing up some stuff on the first 2 hellraisers, which are my personal favorites. Really really love the first one though, just for the nostalgia. One of the first really ****ed up movies I enjoyed and a young lad.
Event Horizon is on my watch list for sure.Yeah, Event Horizon is one of the freakiest movies I have seen in the horror genre.
I think, the generic formula for horror, is making no sense, ugly characters, in the dark, some sort of gooey red stuff here and there.
I think, the generic formula for horror, is making no sense, ugly characters, in the dark, some sort of gooey red stuff here and there.
It depends entirely on what you want out of a horror movie. That formula is surely true for a brain-dead good time horror movie, but the same thought goes into great horror films as would go into a great drama or comedy.
I personally prefer just some good visuals and well planned creative death scenes because it appeals to me. But someone else could like horror movies that make commentary on society, or make you think about your mortality, or even just a movie built on pure tension with no blood or death.
haven't seen anything good recently.

Horror movies are very hit or miss, and the best stuff coming out right now is the niche b movies that only people deep into horror like.

That's dependent on taste.
Do you like gore? Suspense? Satire? Supernatural? Slashers? Monster movies? etc. etc.
Try either "The Gateway Meat" or "Melancholie der Engel" if you like fun/depraved gore effects.haven't seen anything good recently.

The Strangers still holds up as my favorite home invasion movie and I'm hoping when the sequel finally comes out next year, they haven't totally butchered it.

what year is the stragner.
Watched Midnight Meat Train last night. It was alright. Ending caught me by surprise.Ever watch Black Metal Veins? Horror's subjective I guess, but that one was pretty numbing.
Honestly I have never seen a horror film I would consider scary though.

I don't know if I would necessarily recommend the first two to a "beginner" in the genre!
The Strangers is a great movie.Trick 'r Treat is at the top of my Halloween movie list. Have any more details come out about the sequel, other than it existing?
Some movies I have liked in the past 5-10 years or so - EVIL DEAD (the new one), The Babadook, It Follows, The 'Hatchet' Series, All of the V/H/S Movies, The House of the Devil, Clown, Burying the Ex (more comedy, but still great), Tucker & Dale vs Evil (satire / comedy), Trick 'r Treat, Martyrs (the original not the ****ty remake).
Just off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.
Still would consider the 2000's pretty meh for horror overall. Especially more mainstream stuff.

I thoroughly enjoyed both.
Get Out is probably the best new one in a while. It's totally daft but everybody commits to it well and seeing it a second time when you know the ending is quite fun.
I liked Bone Tomahawk quite a bit as well. Half old school western, half horror. The cast and dialogue is very entertaining.
Saw the Reanimator on Netflix for the first time lately and it's fantastic. The effects are still incredible.
I just watched a WatchMojo on the top 10 horror films of the 2010s, of which I haven't seen several yet:
-Oculus
-The Crazies
-Let Me In
-The Woman in Black
-Sinister (2012)
-V/H/S/2
-Insidious
-Evil Dead (2013)
-The Cabin in the Woods
-The Conjuring
Probably going to end up watching them all.
Get Out was pure liberal propaganda.

Rewatching all of the Alien franchise before Covenant on Friday...Aliens is far and away the best of the series
if you haven't seen the recently released Krampus (2015), I definitely recommend that. Otherwise check out Poultrygeist Night of the Chicken Dead if you want an absurd gore fest. It's a Troma film so it's by the same people who did the Toxic Avenger. Not horror, but check out Combat Shock, best Troma film IMO.

Boi I'm writing up some things now. Watched 3 movies for the thread.
Original Carrie - Somehow had not seen this movie, but it was great.
Puppet Master 2 - Just a refresh for myself. One of my favorite movies though.
I Sell the Dead - Comedy / horror type thing with all kinds of monsters. Was pretty funny and interesting.
I'm due for a rewatch of Carrie, same goes for Suspiria and my favorite, Rosemary's Baby.

Caught Evil Dead 2 over the weekend, the original Evil Dead movies (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, & Army of Darkness) are easily my most beloved horror movies of all time. If you haven't seen them yet & consider yourself a horror fan they are must watch movies. Sam Raimi at his best IMHO. The 2013 remake was alright but made a big mistake by not including the comedy the series is known for. Also the Ash vs Evil Dead series on Starz was spectacular, it made for a great throwback to the horror & comedy from ED2 & AoD. :thumb:

My favorite movie of al time is ED2! I still loved the remake though, and I loved it because of the lack of comedy. The serious turn of the movie made it great for me. imo they would have never caught the charm of the old one if they tried to re-create the comedy.
Rewatched Stage Fright, Sleepaway Camp 2, The Burning, and The Prowler this weekend. All hold up well after 25+ years :thumb:
Definitely check both out if you're into 80s slashers. Stage Fright was pretty great for what it was/is; the whole film is contained within a theater so no one is out in the open.Rewatched Stage Fright, Sleepaway Camp 2, The Burning, and The Prowler this weekend. Not particularly a horror fanatic: cheap gore does nothing for me and I have no time at all for torture porn. I like the Scream films which are mentioned earlier, and also Event Horizon.
Another series that I did enjoy:
- Ginger Snaps
- Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed
- Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning

Never saw the original It. Might try to watch it this weekend. Was not interested in the remake whatsoever, but the buzz around how good it is has me intrigued.
I'm not one for horror films (gore makes me uneasy and jump-scares are too much for me), but I'm very keen on checking out this new one.

Just saw It last week. I saw the orginal TV mini series and also read the novel by Stephen King and gotta say, the latest iteration is pretty close to the book I've read. Bill Skarsgard is awesome as Pennywise the clown. Go see it!
An old Chinese horror film (don't remember the title), where a hand reached up from within the toilet and killed a guy.

Solid 8/10 is what I would give it. Been thinking about it since I saw it and I definitely want to watch it again when it releases.

Synopsis
A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a lethal arsenal of terrible weapons with him.
I went into this movie, expecting it to be a color by numbers horror movie about a weird and possibly homicidal funeral director, What I got was a **** storm of crazy. Every character in the movie is just a little bit off it seems. The younger brother essentially stalks his older brother, the older one is somehow never rattled by anything (you'll see what I mean), and there is a random appearance by an old psychic grandma who never shows back up. Aside from it's weird characters, the plot barely makes sense, and nothing is explained in the movie. With all that being said, this is a great movie.
Lot's of good gore, the music is FANTASTIC, the Tall Man is very memorable and creepy, and the movie overall looks great. It reminds me of Giallo in so many ways, with the erratic scene changes, creepy music, and vibrant gore that pops out of the screen. It's no wonder after seeing this, that there is such a huge cult following.
~8/10~

Perhaps not horror in the traditional sense of monsters and gore, but still preying on real fears: Sanctum is based on a true story.
A film about a diving/cave exploration team mapping an unexplored underwater cave system in the jungle. An extremely tense experience for anyone with anything close to claustrophobia, thalassophobia, or asphyxiphobia. I actually found myself breathing irregularly along with the movie as it forces the characters into cramped time-sensitive watery tombs over and over. Some great set design in this as well.
The BabysitterShow Image(http://assets1.ignimgs.com/2017/10/13/babysitter-1280-1507914509274_400w.jpg)
Synopsis
The Babysitter, directed by McG, follows Cole (Judah Lewis), who is madly in love with his babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving). She's cool and awesome in all the ways Cole is not. One evening while Bee is babysitting, Cole witnesses the unthinkable. Now he must survive a night full of first kisses, first broken hearts, and first encounters with homicidal maniacs (played by Bella Thorne, Andrew Bachelor, Robbie Amell, and Hana Mae Lee).
I went into this with very low expectations, and came out of it very happy, This movie was surprisingly good. Very upbeat and the comedy was great, making it feel almost like the Scott Pilgrim of horror movies. Lots of parts of the movie I didn't see coming, while others were very predictable. Overall this was just a fun movie to watch for fans of older horror movies and B horror, but don't go in expecting some sort of thrilling masterpiece.

I remember seeing a movie called The Cave that was similar to Sanctum, but I think The Descent take the cake for cave and/or cave creatures movies.

I watched the Saw series recently.
Good effects, some interesting ideas, and the plot twists in the first few movies are great.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original Dawn of the Dead. It has a healthy mix of action and horror and is very b-movie, but it's definitely entertaining. It's got a different tone than Night of the Living Dead, but that's not a bad thing, and the infamous "political" undertones of the original aren't really there (do expect lots of jabs at consumerism though). Tom Savini plays a small role, in addition to his primary role of designing the zombie makeup, and he does a good job of stealing the scene.
The movie's action elements are a bit toned down--after all, the film was a low budget movie. There are actually times you might feel sorry for the zombies as well. The movie does a pretty good job of reminding you that the characters are in real danger, even when you get sucked into the "coolness" of their behavior. And it establishes relatively early on that none of the cast is safe from death. Despite this, it's one of the earliest zombie movies to actually develop a female character--we see her go from "nearly useless" to "quite genre savvy" over the course of the film.
The gore isn't spectacular by today's standards, but it was notorious at the time for nearly netting the movie an X-rating. There is one particularly hard to watch scene near the end, although hardcore horror fans won't be too upset by it. I wouldn't really call the film a gorefest, suspenseful or scary, but it's a classic for a reason, and pretty much every zombie movie since has drawn cues from either it or its predecessor.
My recommendation on Romero's Dawn of the Dead: well, you won't find it (legally) online. At least not for streaming. However, if you can get your hand on the Divimax DVD, you'll get one of the most complete cuts. You'll have a hard time buying it new though.
The remake is really love it or hate it--I liked the directors cut, and I don't really see how running reanimated corpses is any more or less plausible than the typical reanimated corpse, but a lot of people take this issue seriously for some reason.
but the lack of Ving Rhames and zombies babies puts it a bit behind.
Jeepers Creepers is one my favorites. The sequels are horrendous though.
TBH I'm not sure a scary movie exists at all. Of all the emotions a film can elicit, fright has never been one of them for me. Try as I may to find a film that can to no avail.
I've been frightened in real life to be sure. But I can honestly say I've never experienced real fear from any movie or video game. It's just too easy to disassociate the media from what is real so my brain thinks it's funny, if anything. I enjoy horror very much but for some of the same reasons I also enjoy comedy.
OK, I lied. There was that one time I played through Amnesia on mushrooms, but besides that never.

Ok yeah horror games are a lot more terrifying than movies, for the fact that they require user input in order to move the story forward. that, in addition to the fact that the events taking place feel like they're happening to you, rather than some protagonist in a movie. Outlast is pretty terrifying. I heard good things about The Forest, but so far its a really disappointing survival/builder game

Between the writing and acting one might legitimately mistake it for a comedy.
Was in a weird mood last night and watched Timecrimes and Upgrade. Both were very good, but I wouldn't call either one horror.
Also watched the original It(1990) and laughed the entire time, it's so damn bad. Between the writing and acting one might legitimately mistake it for a comedy.
What'surRecommendats for Halloween Tonite...
It's rentable on Prime for like $7, although I can think of a better way to see it...

in 10 years, when they reboot upgrade, w/ upgraded special effects, it will be Epic..
Transcendence as well.. the one with jack sparrow.. Also great movie, same plot concepts, could use some m0ar CGI.. even though CGI is already miles better than Upgrade...
Personally I don't see the moral ambiguity, I would gladly sacrifice my "soul" for enhanced abilities and near-immortality.
People place too much value on the nostalgia of flesh.

You're thinking inside the box OF YOU..
YOU as a concept is a neural network, is a thing, trained in the environment that is the world.
The STEM from the film is better Than you are in every way and at EVERYTHING you exist to do..
Therefore, you do not sacrifice for it to gain or lose, YOU merely perish, and STEM continues as Humanity's legacy.
It's not so much an upgrade, as stepping aside, relinquishing replicant priority to our better children.
But you get to still be you when STEM isn't controlling you, and even when it is you still have autonomous thought. I suppose there would be a ratio of how much autonomy are you willing to sacrifice to be better, which really is not all that different a concept compared to working 8hrs a day 5 days a week doing something that doesn't fulfill your personal satisfaction goal.
I am curious what a society in which every individual is able to realize their potential would look like, and I believe it would be beneficial to give up at least a portion of autonomy to realize that kind of evolution.
Does it really matter if you are in control when you are spending that time under control anyway?

Hrrrrmmm.. dead alive 4K..
Idk.. the Vanilla bluray release was mehh.. they made the flic w/ bargain equipment.. not alot of fidelity in general.. The dark scenes were also very grey and blurry because of poor film sensitivity.
I guess that's probably not why people watch Dead Alive for.. buhhh.. yea 4K would be a money grab..
These screens were pulled from the bluray

Jackson is saying they look a lot better, and the article states they haven't been restored or re-released as of yet. Quote from the article:
Despite being beloved by horror fans, neither film has to date been restored and re-released, but Jackson himself just revealed to Empire’s Film Podcast that 4K restorations are in the works!
“Anything from those films that is available is, like, 1990s Telecine things, which is the best that we had… compared now, they look bloody awful,” Jackson told the podcast. “I just haven’t re-released them because, if I do, I want them to look really good. We’ve actually done some experiments. They look bloody fantastic. They look like they’re shot on 35mm.”
“So yeah, what we’ll do now is.. get really nice 4K copies of these fully restored and back out into circulation again,” Jackson added.
I'm just glad to see one of my favorites being potentially restored, but the DVD copy is all I've ever seen and I'm 110% content with that! Also, Jackson probably has no real need for money after the success of all the LOTR films and I don't see a 4k Dead Alive really being a cash-cow, seems more like a project of passion than anything.

happy helloween everybody!
So when it comes to horror movie suggestions, I usually recommend some but there are some caveats:
You want a movie that has the possibility of horrifying you and that said movie is fictional in nature. If not then I could just recommend instructional videos on eye/knee surgery or the breeding habits of human bloat flies.
Anyway here is a list of movies I found to be particularly disturbing and/or scary. It's best to not look up as much as possible about each of these before watching:
1. Martyrs (2008 - ahem, there was a 2015 remake apparently? Not needed, refuse to watch. Revenge thriller I guess you could call it?)
2. The Road (2009 - A film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name. Bleak. Post-apocalyptic survival.)
3. Bone Tomahawk (2015 - Old west frontier setting, rescue the damsel in distress.)
4. The Descent (2005 - Cave exploration gone awry.)
5. [REC] (2007 - NOT THE AMERICAN REMAKE - Found footage film from within an apartment building quarantined by the CDC.)
6. It Follows (2014 - Abstinence propaganda of the best kind.)
I really did not enjoy martyrs.

I was watching Hereditary on a flight back from Japan. That movie is creepy as hell!
Gummo? idk about that one. Weird and off-puttig maybe, but isn't it supposed to be like a slice of life?
Now this is an awesome thread! I just watched Terrifier and it was pretty damn good. Great soundtrack!

I loved how the main guy would still make faces and act stuff out after the kills, like "guess I ****ed that one up a lil, the ***** stabbed me"
Has to be the most fun horror movie I've seen in a while
Watched The Void on NF a few days ago, it had some neat ideas and I love seeing practical monster effects being used to that extent. But the movie was only OK, there was a lot more they could've done with it. You get the sense the script was cut back a lot.

I agree... it had some rad parts but it left me wanting a lot more.
Have you watched Mandy yet?
I really enjoyed it.
Movies that I generally found scary on first watch:
The Descent
Paranormal Activity
Insidious
I love The Exorcist, The Shining, The Thing, Alien.... But I've seen them all too many times to recall how scary they were to me originally.

If you're in to some asian horror, I recommend Coming Soon (2008, Thai Film)
Midsommer looks pretty good. It reminds me of the Satanic/Cult films that were super popular in the '70s. I wanna see it, anyone seen it?
Midsommer looks pretty good. It reminds me of the Satanic/Cult films that were super popular in the '70s. I wanna see it, anyone seen it?Midsommar is fantastic! I'm still thinking about it, weeks later. It's scary because everything that happens in the film could happen IRL, unlike his first film, Hereditary, which is also fantastic. After walking out of the theater, my wife says "Remind me to never watch another one of that guy's movies." lol
I still think about Terrifier from time to time, not because I enjoyed it for its story or art merits but because it made me feel bad. It's pure torture porn, which is my least favorite horror sub genre, and I just wanted that clown to die through the entire movie. Worse yet, I watched it with my parents (!) My dad likes cheesy horror flicks and he says "I'm in the mood for a scary movie, let's peruse the Netflix and see what pops up." :eek:Now this is an awesome thread! You're right. Midsommar isn't actually scary, per se, but I found it to be extremely intense, stress-inducing, and suspenseful...and beautiful, I might add. According to an article I read, Ari Aster's intent was to create a fairy tale for the main character while dropping the supporting characters into a folk-horror nightmare.Midsommer looks pretty good. I saw it the other day, didn't find it scary but visually it was really cool. Would definitely recommend it! :thumb:

I would just like to take a moment, to say RIP to one of the greats.

The new Chucky felt less believable . I mean, the old one ran on magic, OK, magic is pretty powerful stuff.
The new chucky runs on a battery, toy class servos, toy risc.
The technology does not exist to make such a small toy with that many capabilities and that much force output.
It'd need a small diesel engine to do all that stuff.
The entire It franchise is ****ing dumb. I don't care if it's popular, that doesn't make it good. All the characters are annoying, the idea is dumb, and Pennywise makes me laugh every time he's on screen.
Just as stupid as the original movie, but in different new and stupid ways.
The original movie almost gives me Twin Peaks vibes with it's levels of weirdness.
Watched the Jason (2009) reboot last night and it was ****, no wonder they didn't keep going with that. Terrible direction, terrible acting, dislikable characters, and they somehow gave Jason LESS personality if that were at all possible.
The movie sucks - stick to the classics.
Very ****ing true, no idea why they try and refresh what was already iconic in that way. It's something that only works with the aesthetic of the time, and they nailed it then. Don't fix what aint broke.

The Refresh has to be done, because the entirety of his and her circumstances has been done in some way.
Originality in plot is no longer possible.
This has been the case for hundreds of years, but before the internet, something was always new to someone.
Post internet, everyone has seen everything.
When Dsnail and Nturtle die, the younger generation will consider their lifetime iterations the original, and during midlife they will critique new stuff using the same remarks as y'allzus.
Just watched DOOM (2019)
Wow. Terrible.
I loathe horror movies and never watch them, but if anyone is looking for a truly, utterly, *horrible* movie that you will spend the rest of your life regretting that you ever watched, try "Salo - 120 Days of Sodom" by Pasolini. You will hate me for it.Now, I am intrigued.
you got great taste Spinning, idk wht that catagory is but it one of my faves.
Psychedelic Horror? Stuff like: Mandy, Midsommer, Beyond The Black Rainbow, Man Bites Dog, Enter The Void, The Holy Mountain, Jacob's Ladder, Berberian Sound Studio, Videodrome, and House(1977.)
Ohhh I found a great list. There's some stuff on here I've never even heard of: https://letterboxd.com/mr_ugli/list/psychedelic-horror/ (https://letterboxd.com/mr_ugli/list/psychedelic-horror/)
and Psychedelic Horror is apparently the term ;D

I'm not really into modern horror movies. Not because I think they're cheesy or unoriginal, but just because I don't like the general scheme of having you actually care about a bunch of characters, and then having everyone they care about be killed or worse, with the ending leaving nothing but a depressing end result. I've seen that in most modern horror movies I've watched, and it just makes me feel bad in general.
I more prefer the style of horror that's meant to freak people out, or to just build tension to almost unbearable levels before releasing it. Not solely a horror movie-more action-but Alien does what I'm talking about, in a way. While it DOES wind up killing a lot of people, it doesn't torture them or reduce any of the characters to a desperate mess.
I dunno, I'm weird about horror. I just don't like most modern ones. Can't explain why.
Finally got around to watching a quiet place. alot of in consistencies. How could the monster's hearing be Sooooooo good from far away, and so crappy up close. Humans breath and move really loudly.
