[GB](Closed) 1.8mm LEDs & SIP Sockets
« on: Fri, 10 July 2015, 02:59:31 »
GB is now closed, collection starting today, you have until Sunday to pay it, if you need to work something out, PM me.

GB Information:

This groupbuy will run for 4 weeks, until August 8th. MOQ for each is 1000, but because there is enough interest, I will do this like I did with my stickers, and start invoicing once we break the initial MOQ.

How ordering works:

Each part is in a group of 10, so if you want 100 LEDs, or 100 SIP sockets, all you need to put in for your order is 10.

LED Colors Available:

Yellow $0.40 per 10

Green $0.40 per 10

Red $0.35 per 10

Blue $0.45 per 10

White $0.47 per 10

Pink $0.55 per 10

SIP Sockets:

Zeal's separated sockets $1.25 per 10

Mil-Max Plastic-Sheath SIP Sockets We will see when it is over

Shipping:

USA $5.95

INT $7.00

GB Fee & Discounts:

Since PayPal has a 30c invoice fee, and they also take 2.9%, I will just be adding a dollar to cover invoicing fees. If you order more than 1k LEDs, you get a 10% discount.

Order Form
http://goo.gl/forms/iEyATidRLR

Estimated turn around time: I plan on having these out by the 2nd week of September, but probably earlier than that because I have the proper boxes for the most part, and I will have help sorting. Any questions can be sent to my PMs and I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Yay! I'll put in my order once I figure out what color and how many I want. I think yellow would go great on a keyboard with TA, but I wanna think about it a little more.. hmm.. maybe pink..

I'm confused

SIP Sockets $0.69 per 10 is 10 pair or 5 pair ?

10 SIP sockets, not pairs, so you only get 10 SIP sockets, so 5 pair

Zeal's do not have the plastic sheathing and are a bit longer, easier to use IMO, I like them more, but the other ones are the mil-max ones in plastic shipping.

What the difference between the two sip sockets?

From IC thread:
sethk_: Do you have prices on the SIP sockets yet?
I think so. They are pre-separated from the plastic sleeves, so they are ~13c each. I personally like using these more and don't mind the premium since they are pre-separated.

A little disappointed on the SIP price. They are available ~8c each on mouser when you buy 10 just units (64 pieces each). The little sleeves pop off easily with flush cutters, not that much of an inconvenience imo. I'm still in for a big order of LEDs though!

EDIT: Forgot to acknowledge that the Zeal SIP sockets are slightly different than the MillMax ones on mouser. Both have worked great for me though, no preference for one or the other.
I've since changed to a different type of SIP socket from what you've purchased. My individually removed SIP sockets have a ~5mm long soldering tail.

Yeah, 0.170" solder tail would be good... I've used the ones with 0.125" solder tails and they don't protrude from the PCB, so soldering them is tricky.
Milmax ones have a solder tail that's roughly 4.3mm. The ones I stock have a 5mm tail. :)

These are just LEDs, not the matching resistors, right? Are the voltages named in the IC so I can make a note of what 'size' resistors to get? Since I'm hoping for some of four different colors.

I have personally found that 830ohm works for me for any LED colors, but I am probably retarded for doing it and probably screwing something up. Winkeyless uses these same LEDs and he says that for a 60% board, 830 is fine for any color.

830 ohms is high enough to guarantee that it'll work with any color. That's why I asked for the specs of the LEDs (still waiting), so I can calculate a lower value resistor to increase current/brightness and still don't fry the USB port.

You can, you should be fine, but look at the specs just to be sure. I am not the one to be asked about ohm as far as LEDs go, I just solder it in and hope it works

I think most KBs use high resistance values due to the USB current limit vs. the high number of LEDs on a KB so you can probably put pretty much any LED in and be well under their nominal current let alone their max current, it is always nice to have a datasheet though to know for sure.

Nah, a 5V power supply, a multimeter and a decade resistance box are all I need to discover what I want. ;)

Or just a multimeter that can measure diode voltage. You can pretty much assume ultrabright LEDs will have forward voltage drop of 3.5V, except for reds which might be as low as 2V.

If you have a keyboard that powers all LEDs in parallel (i.e. one resistor per LED), start with the max current you want to supply all LEDs.
Let's be conservative and choose 400mA, leaving 100mA for powering the microcontroller.
Divide that by the number of LEDs. Let's say 61 keys for a standard 60%... so 6.55mA per LED.
If you were using ~3.5V forward voltage drop LEDs (e.g. white, blue, green, etc.) then the resistor value would be: R=V/I = (5V-3.5V)/0.00655A = 229 ohm
However, if you wanted to be compatible with LEDs with forward voltage drops as low as 2V, then do:  R=V/I = (5V-2V)/0.00655A = 458 ohm

Therefore, something like 470 ohm is a good choice for a 60% keyboard, and be compatible with white or red LEDs.
Reversing the math, white LEDs would receive 3.1mA and red LEDs would receive 6.3mA.

Now, if you were ONLY going to use LEDs with forward voltage drop of 3.5V (i.e. never use red LEDs), then you can use something closer to 229 ohm, so the LEDs get closer to 6mA each.

That's pretty much what I already calculated, but you know that The Real World™ isn't always so mathematically predictable. And the values changes when you are dealing with more LEDs. Like a 78% keyboard that some Brazilian guy is designing. :P

EDIT: I'm just waiting for USB 3.1 (and type C connectors) to become more common. It will support up to 3 A of current, we will be able to lit all the LEDs at full power;D

Very ordered.

As the price was lower than I'd originally thought, I went for 50 of each ;D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

So far MOQ has been hit for everything except for yellow LEDs and the SIP sockets from Zeal, but this is only after the first weekend, so as far as I am concerned, everything should hit MOQ, and if it doesn't, I will just round up to MOQ.

Are you planning to invoice us after the GB window closes?

Thank you for running this. I look forward to being buried by piles of LEDs.

Ordered at least 100 of each colour plus a bunch of sip sockets.

I've only got one project on my sights, but you never know what you might feel like doing later on  down the track ;)

That's not a bad idea. I forgot what I ordered, but I don't think there were any yellows at all (?). Hey Seth can you add a '2' (20 LEDs) to my order?
