1391401 IBM Model M does not work with "Blue Cube" adapter
« on: Sun, 12 February 2012, 15:19:22 »
I bought an IBM Model M keyboard from Ebay with the part number 1391401. I have an ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard with an i5 2500k cpu. At stock cpu clock 3.3ghz, the IBM Model M has no response on the native ps/2 port on my motherboard. I took some advice from a thread I found on this forum to overclock my cpu, and my IBM Model M finally comes to life at a cpu overclock of 4.3ghz.

I buy a "Blue Cube" adapter from cyberguys because I am a little suspect on the lifespan of my cpu leaving the overclock that high. With my Model M plugged into the blue cube adapter, my motherboard detects the new usb device and installs drivers but the keyboard never works. I have restarted multiple times and I have tried all of the usb ports on my motherboard and my case. I have tried this blue cube adapter on a 1999 ps/2 Gateway keyboard and that works fine, but for some reason it will not work with my Model M.

*Update* I have tested my Model M with multiple computers in my home with the Blue Cube adapter. Windows detects the usb device, installs drivers, and then after that nothing. No detection of the keyboard and no response. Even restarting the computers does not work.

i don't know why cpu clock would have anything to do with the ps2 port. i have the same mobo and cpu and i've tested dozens of model ms with no issues.

i have had my cpu at 4.6ghz since the first week i got it.

From clickykeyboards.com:

The vast majority of commonly available ps2 to USB converters are simple passive ADAPTERS that simply change the plug shape to match the outlet. These ADAPTERS only function to connect the ps/2 wires to the approximate USB wires. Simple ps/2 to USB adapters do not use specific software drivers.

In general, most users having trouble connecting their keyboard to newer computers are looking for a ps/2 to USB signal CONVERTER. These devices use an integrated circuit (pre-programmed chip) to actively translate the ps/2 keyboard signal and convert it into a USB keyboard signal.

This allows the vintage ps/2 keyboard to be automatically recognized by the operating system as if it were a standard, modern USB keyboard. A well-designed active ps/2 to USB converter will use the built-in operating system drivers for a USB keyboard (for example in Microsoft Windows XP, kbdclass.sys and kbdhid.sys).

Do you have a second keyboard to test the cube with? You might have a fried cube.

The other option would be a problem with the M. I recommend you open up the board and inspect the solder points of the SDL socket on the controller, a cold solder joint could be the issue.

You might also try testing the adapter using another PS2 peripheral (if you have one) to ensure the adapter works.
