Does this mean that this will make it easier for others to copy designs from other artisans? Double edged sword I guess

Well, only if they have the same sculpting skills  :))

Oh snap.  It's all coming together now.  :))

I thought the milled bottom mold portion was on hiatus - didn't realize it was still in the works.

I saw one of these caps last week and noted the maker's mark location and thought "huh, that's weird", not realizing the intended application.

It's possible to make your own stem inserts.  Right now the cherry mold stem is machinable with low cost.  A crafty, more advanced, caster could make their own alt-stems like topre and alps.

And so the Color By Numbers of artisan crafting was invented.

This solves a very basic and tedious problem with casting keycaps, but it does not solve ALL of the problems casting keycaps.

Does this mean that this will make it easier for others to copy designs from other artisans? Double edged sword I guess

No this is not the case.  Many artisan caps will not fit this piece unless heavily retooled.  The underside of this key is unique, and will therefore be very easy to distinguish vs artisans which are not made using this device.

It's going to be a lot less expensive than getting a pressure pot, and if someone runs into enough troubles starting out you might even save on wasted silicone.

The only question I have is when are is the $ynth going to be made for modifiers?

Probably, they would obviously cost more, so let's see how this goes. :)

Ah ha, so those are what you've been teasing the whole time!

Killer ****ing work Binge, this is super exciting stuff!

EDIT: Future Topre Support I hope?

Maybe not natively, but people could hack their own topre stems out of this.

Isn't topre stems a little bit wider than MX? I suppose it would work to hack it, but that would also require making the hole bigger!

I believe you mentioned earlier that this setup would not necessitate a pressure/vacuum setup, correct? (I do understand that technically any mold can be cast without the aid of a pressure pot, but the comment in question seemed to imply that there would be minimal process hangups to overcome even if pressure was not used)  If so, was the example cap in the video cast under pressure or not?  Just curious.  :)

Great work, Binge, and informative video as always.

I can't cast without pressure.  My plastics would foam, but a lot of plastics are great for gravity casting.

So to answer the question...

A) Yes this mold would make a relatively void free casting via standard gravity if you were to account for standard hangups that happens during gravity casting.  The large reservoirs made by the oversized gates/runners/sprues/vents are something that is hard to achieve properly with a flexible mold.  Booper is about the only flexible mold I've seen that has proper sized gates/runners/sprues/vents for gravity casting.

B) No my example key is pressure cast because at this point the plastics I use will not set correctly outside of pressure/vacuum systems.

This is super cool man. Will have to get my lego build all ready..
