Here are the current plates I'm working with... I need to cut some, what goes? :p
  • Fixed Red Aluminum
  • Fixed Silver Aluminum
  • Fixed Brass
  • Fixed Polycarbonate
  • Universal Red Aluminum
  • Universal Silver Aluminum
  • Universal Brass
  • Universal Polycarbonate
  • Partial Red Aluminum
  • Partial Silver Aluminum
  • Partial Polycarbonate
  • 5mm Red Aluminum
  • 5mm Silver Aluminum
  • 5mm Brass
  • 5mm Polycarbonate

I (rather annoyingly) can justify every single option, but I am thinking of cutting a few if they go unmentioned. I think 7-8 options would be best.

You could make a google form with these options and allow like max. 2 picks and the 7-8 plates with the most votes will be offered.

Also, what about steel?  :))

There's nothing better than votes :))

Steel feels awful, so no, sorry!

Yikes, that's a lot of choices...  Is there somewhere I can read about the different characteristics ( pros/cons ) of the different plate materials?

I can only go from my typing experiences with 268 but:
  • Aluminum - Slightly harder bottom out feel, more crisp feeling compared to Brass. Slightly higher pitched noise. Nothing bad, great baseline.
  • Brass - Slightly softer bottom out feel, less crisp, more "blunt" compared to Alu. Slightly lower pitched noise. Overall a tiny bit softer.
  • Polycarbonate - Softer, cushiony, not very crisp. You can tell when you bottom out, but not nearly as much as Alu/Brass imo. Nicest sounding since there isn't a metallic sound.
It's hard finding the right words to describe the feelings.

No one has given their opinion on 5mm plates, so anything said will be guess work until I get the samples.

I feel that you’d only need one 5mm option, say brass, because it is primarily for maximising weight and rigidity, right?

As for me, a fixed poly plate is all I need :D

No universal alu :O. Thats a bummer as I love alu plates most.

I really wish there were more with the layout support of the 5mm. I don't think I can deal with anything that doesn't support split right shift, and I greatly prefer full touch caps for ctrl. Now i dunno what to do since the only brass plate is the one I'd never user.

The main advantage of the 5mm plate support is that you don't really see anything visibly different from offering split backspace or right shift, i guess you MIGHT be able to see that it supports both caps, but for the most part the look when assembled into the same layout as fixed should be identical. No massive iso gaps and stuff.

Since you're shipping from the UK: there won't be any import taxes within the EU (or specifically Germany), right?

All plates are exchangeable and work with the same chassis.

Since you're shipping from the UK: there won't be any import taxes within the EU (or specifically Germany), right?

Not sure at the minute.

If the parts are declared full value, then they'll be made VAT exempt as I'm reshipping (in short terms), and any custom charges will be independent to each package.

If they aren't, and they're low enough to not make a fuss, then it'll save us all money (apart from me, but I could work this into overall costs, not sure).

Well I sent the files over to the middleman to place the order on the 9th of April, and I haven’t had confirmation (or communication really). I’m pretty much in the dark right now.

If I don’t see any progress then I’ll have to go direct.

Still considering it.

Actually that's not quite correct, currently a 'transition period' of 21 months from 29th March 2019 has been agreed whereby businesses/people/etc have time to prepare for new rules between the UK and EU to begin whilst all current laws/agreements stay the same as they are currently. Of course this could all change, though I would suggest if it does it will only be extended.

TL;DR: I wouldn't worry about import costs UK>EU until 1st Jan 2021 at the very earliest. More than likely it will get pushed back as a result of government cluelessness/incompetence. Hey if we are really lucky who knows, it may never happen!

Isn't there a healthy price difference in material costs and mfg process with the harder alloy?

6061 is a perfectly good mix for our purposes.

Yeah 6061 is absolutely fine for this use, but happy to offer more bespoke options for the people that want something different :p

So has the aluminum type being used for this project been finalized? Crossing my fingers for the option to have 7075.

6061, but if you and a few others really want it, happy to try other alloys.

Isn't there a healthy price difference in material costs and mfg process with the harder alloy?

6061 is a perfectly good mix for our purposes.

Yeah 6061 is absolutely fine for this use, but happy to offer more bespoke options for the people that want something different :p
I'd be down if we can get good colors and the price isnt crazy

If say 5 people wanted 7075, and they're all the same color, I'm happy to make it happen.

Basically, as long as the effort isn't wasted, it's fine.

I love the design though; this is something I'd wait a year for especially with the quality of the 268. The layout with arrow keys stepped in and blocker above the right arrow key is one of my ultimate keyboard fetishes, and the only thing I would personally change is to block off the 2 keys in the row above the top arrow key like a TKL (would be awesome as an option in the eventual GB or something).
All said, this is as endgame as it gets for me, so I might as well wait for it ;D

Well I won't spoil too much, but it'll likely be a one layout deal as it is a modernized G80-5000.

Still figuring out what to use instead of the original bottom row, it's impossible to source 3.5u Cherry spacebars :(
