Steve Woz
« on: Thu, 29 May 2014, 23:01:16 »

Met the Steve Woz tonight at a fund raiser dinner and gave him 3 of my business cards (Digital, Metal, and Plastic)  I only got to talk to him for a minute or two but it is abundantly clear what a nice, down to earth good guy he is.  He told me how cool he thought the digital card was, signed my Poker II keyboard, and we shook hands.

I'm such a nerd

YOU MET WOZ!?! I hate you.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

He is indeed super pretty nice. It never occurred to me to ask him to sign a keyboard. Noted for the future.

Excellent - grats!

I bet he loved the digital business card - it's the kind of hardware tinkering he is famous for,
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I saw him speak at an event, so I brought it with the hope that I would meet him.

I did tweet him this:  https://twitter.com/TechKeysUS/statuses/472221957803352066 hoping maybe he would grace us with his presence!

My Woz story:

During college I was in an airport heading somewhere for a competition with a friend. I spotted someone familiar out of the corner of my eye, and turned to see Woz about to get on an elevator to go up to one of those Delta members lounges or whatever.

He was maybe 100ft away, so I yelled out, "Hey, Steve!" He turned around, and I said, "Wish me luck!" and gave him a thumbs up. He returned the thumbs up, yelled "Good luck," and got in his elevator.

I won the competition.

He invented the first successful and practical PC. Pretty much completely by himself. The other Steve was the business side, Woz was the inventor.
He also engineered the ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) interface used for Apple keyboards and mice until they switched to USB in the first iMac in '98.
