Hi geekhack friends,
I've been quietly working on this project over the last 6 months. I now have a working prototype and a small initial run is in the works, so I thought it would be a good time to share a bit more. This is my first keyboard design, my first time using CAD software, and my first time having something I created manufactured. Since these are plenty of firsts, and since I don't care overly much about naming, I'm happy to introduce the No. 1, a custom TKL.
There are three design decisions I'd like to mention. The first is that the "weight" isn't so much of a weight as it is half of a two-part case bottom — the weight design visible on the underside of the case is the same piece of material that forms the strip that runs around the side and back of the case. The second is that the plate is sandwich-mounted between the two-part bottom and the case top. Sandwich-style cases have, in my experience, provided the best typing experience and sound compared to bottom or top-mounted plates. Third, adhesive rubber gaskets have been incorporated into grooves in the case top to ensure that the plate is sandwiched perfectly with no wiggle room.

It's not a diffuser. Thats a solid piece of metal
It reminds me of the VE.A.
It has something similar going with the polycarb inner shell.

Very nice! What CAD program did you end up choosing to make this, and did you design this from the ground up, or did you base it off of yuktsi's TKL?
This was designed from the ground up with the exception of the plate switch cutouts, which was modified from yuktsi's TGR plate as I didn't have a good enough process yet to do it correctly on my first try. Multiple people provided useful feedback and help navigating the manufacturing process however.
I used Fusion360, which offers a free license for non-commercial use.

A small run is already in the works. I'll post pictures when boards arrive. I hope a larger run will be available later on, but I'm not sure which colors would be available for that.

Yeah. Honestly, I didn't even install LEDs in the prototype because it's not important to me. This keyboard won't light up your room, but it'll look good during the day. :D

I meant the seams where the mid layer meets the bottom and top, the sandwich. I wanna see how sharp of a seam it makes. The bottom looks incredible. It makes me want to buy the board based on that alone.

It's a sort of hybrid between a top-mounted plate with no support in the center of the board and tray-mounted rigidity on the edges where the plate is pressed onto the bottom half of the case. I would welcome the opportunity to compare an aluminum plate to the brass one, but for my second plate I opted for a partial polycarbonate which I don't think will offer a fair comparison (though I'm quite excited for the juxtaposition of PCB-mounted switches to the heft of the case).
I'm really surprised at the heft of the board. It's incredibly solid, the board even with an all-aluminum construction feels nearly as heavy as my F107. I'm glad I went with the aluminum mid-layer, I think brass would have been too much for me to lug to work and back, though it surely would have looked extremely nice :))
My only critique is that the seam on the left-hand side of the mid-layer/weight is about 0.5mm off (sticks out) but aside from that everything is totally flush, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
The board is a bit higher in the front than other boards I'm used to, as well as a slightly steeper angle (9.5deg if I recall correctly) but it matches the overall styling of the board extremely well. The board looks elegant from afar, but up close it has great no-nonsense desk presence. The top profile of the board isn't flashy in all of the ways I was looking for. No logos, lights, diffusers. Just a nice, flat block of finely anodized aluminum.
Did I mention the navy color is fantastic?
All in all a phenomenal board, riot you should be very happy with what you've created. My hat's off to your design and manufacturer. It was a truly well run buy.

The gasket mounting works wonderfully -- the plate sits nice and tight and makes assembly/disassembly very straightforward. I'm really surprised at the heft of the board. It's incredibly solid, the board even with an all-aluminum construction feels nearly as heavy as my F107. I'm glad I went with the aluminum mid-layer, I think brass would have been too much for me to lug to work and back, though it surely would have looked extremely nice :))
My only critique is that the seam on the left-hand side of the mid-layer/weight is about 0.5mm off (sticks out) but aside from that everything is totally flush, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
The board is a bit higher in the front than other boards I'm used to, as well as a slightly steeper angle (9.5deg if I recall correctly) but it matches the overall styling of the board extremely well. The board looks elegant from afar, but up close it has great no-nonsense desk presence. The top profile of the board isn't flashy in all of the ways I was looking for. No logos, lights, diffusers. Just a nice, flat block of finely anodized aluminum.
Did I mention the navy color is fantastic?
All in all a phenomenal board, riot you should be very happy with what you've created. My hat's off to your design and manufacturer. It was a truly well run buy.

If there's an open/available DFX for a Alps-compatible TKL plate out there, that'd also be a big help and make it a lot more likely that I could make it happen. Realistically I'd just make a drawing for a Keycult No.1-compatible Alps plate available and then let folks run a mini-GB to make it happen.

Kin has all the info for most leeku PCBs anyway, so stock levels don't really matter.
L3 ALPS pcb is basically a TX87, you're correct.

I haven't seen the replacement cyan in person, and it was meant to be less green than the one from the GB, but the picture is making the case on the left look straight green, which it isn't. It's more of a turquoise in person.

ya it's just yellow lighting in my room. the color difference also isn't that big when i look at it in person, must be some galaxy s6 camera ****ery going on, i know my S5 cam had a problem displaying colours correctly when there's a big colour contrast present in the photo.

I believe that was exacerbated by the sandblasting, which left super fine particulate on it that soaked up oils and gave it that splotchy look. My friend had a great suggestion, which was to rub an oil over the entire polycarbonate surface to give it essentially a uniform coating. So I wiped it down with a damp rag to get rid of as much particulate as possible, and then applied a super, super thin layer of a synthetic oil. It looks amazing now -- super uniform look and barely any noticeable splotches from my palms resting on it. It also felt sort of chalky before (I think due to the fine particulate on the surface), and it doesn't feel that way now (it feels much better imo). I'll likely treat all of the polycarbonate parts this way before sending them out if/when a GB happens.

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy that folks remain interested in this board, and I'm eager to see this second run come out too, but at this point we're waiting on things that I neither control nor oversee. I'll post here if I see a firm timeline, but I don't know when or if that will come and until that point, prompting for updates in this thread isn't going to yield anything.

I encourage anyone unhappy with their board to reach out to TM to register their complaint. I have no info on what TM is planning to do to make things right, but sending them a message will hopefully ensure that your situation isn't overlooked. If I hear more, I'll post here, but at the moment I'm learning all of this from all of you as boards arrive.
Regarding any future Keycult projects, I'll be in control of the process from start to finish and will be able to enforce a much higher standard of QC. Type Machina was a really cool idea that has clearly stumbled at the beginning. I hope they can pick themselves back up, but for the foreseeable future Keycult will be operating independently.

So, this means that the creators/designers of the boards just only passed the design to TM. The sole responsibility of manufacturing & QC is all on TM.

Healthy skepticism is definitely warranted, but I'm not sure that all the projects through TM operated in the same way.

Seems like Originative likes to create side projects so that failed or half-hearted efforts aren't tied to them as a company and the side projects can be dissolved if need be. Just saying.

100% agreed about the communication. This is a little aggravating seeing people with their boards, him responding to their emails, but nothing in terms of communication for us who have no boards or tracking yet.
I heard somewhere that he was sending the ones that "passed qc". At this point, i don't even care about the quality of finish as i'd get it refinished anyway. I'd just like to be done with the roller coaster and have this board i've been so excited about.

I see a reg BS on the 60 but a split on the 65.
I'll release exact compatibility before boards are available later this week, but it's a single plate with all the usual non-ISO configuration options, including split backspace, split right shift, etc. ISO isn't supported.

I was mostly just curious since it didn’t seem to mention on the site and 5 available is definitely on the low end, even for high end boards like this.
Personally, I’d prefer FCFS for the exact reason you mentioned.

Yes, brass weight & plate on brass editions. Aluminum weight & plate on aluminum editions. A limited number of poly half-plates will be available as well as some extra PCBs.

Are the times correct on the site? The brass are dropping later than the alu ones? Just want to be sure, the boards look exceptionally nice from the pics so far, will defo be trying to get a brass one. Can you reveal info on what colours and how many of each colour will be available? And price?
Yes, the times are correct. More info re: colors will be available later this week. Price is available on the site, but $555 for Brass Edition and $480 for Aluminum Edition.
