Hey!

When GMK Modern Dolch was first launched it became an instant classic. Its’ versatile greys and colourful accents got it voted second best keyset of the year in Mech Madness 2019. Now it’s finally time for the followup, GMK Modern Dolch 2. It keeps everything that made GMK Modern Dolch so popular while adding more options than ever!

Inspiration

Many of you have probably owned one or more variants of the timeless Dolch colour-way. We always loved the contrasted yet simple look between the 2 greys, however we always felt like something was a bit off: the colours just seemed a bit too warm and “muddy”. We really wanted to give a more muted and modern look to this timeless colourway, which is where Modern Dolch comes in. It keeps the simplistic look and the beautiful contrast between the 2 greys, but cooling the colours down and adding some fresh accents. The result is a very versatile set, which goes well with simple silver/black boards, vibrant teal boards and anything in between.

Kits

Standard

The standard kits has compatibility for the most popular layouts in the community. It features the reworked icon mods introduced with GMK 8008/9009 and has the classic Modo accent options for both escape and enter keys.

Addition

Addition adds support for 660c style layouts, ISO UK, 60%s with arrows and boards with an F13 key like the TGR Jane V2 CE. It also adds alternate legend options for 65% layouts and more.

Numbers

Numbers adds compatibility for layouts with a numpad. It also includes the keys needed to outfit a 1800 style layout.

Obscure

Obscure adds support for 40% layouts, both staggered and ortholinear, and split spacebar boards with options ranging from 1u to 3u.

Aesthetic

Aesthetic is for those of you who like to add a little bit of colour to your boards, either through extra accents or through LEDs under lock keys. It also adds both centred and offset 6u spacebar support.

Alternate

Alternate introduces a whole new simplistic look to Modern Dolch by “alternating” the existing colours on some keys. This kit is great if you enjoy monochrome accents or a more uniform looking f row.

Command

Command is specifically aimed at Mac users by adding correct legends for Command and Option keys.

Modern

Modern adds the option for a full icon bottom row, function, escape and 175 control and command keys. It also adds an alternate icon for the tab key.

Norde

This kit adds compatibility for ISO NO, SE, FL, DK, DE, US layouts. It also includes 1.25 and 1.5u Alt Gr keys, a 1.25u Shift and ISO enters in the 3 Modern Dolch colours. This means that Norde users don't have to buy the Addition kit!

Mist

Mist is a stand-alone base kit for those of you who want a cooler and more colourful take of Modern Dolch. It's kit design is nearly identical to the Standard kit, exchanging the red accents for an F13 key and a second B for Alice layouts in combination with the spacebars from the Obscure kit. This makes sure all the most popular layouts from 60% to TKL are supported!

Are the designs for the desk mats finalised? I appreciate the need for branding but is there any chance it can be moved to a corner rather than in the center of what would otherwise be a minimalist, blank space?

It's saying you can cover an Alice layout if you buy Obscure.

Olivia++ with 4K (also single kit champ) and dark w 2K as there’s technically two base kits in that order too. They combined for 872 on day 1 with all vendors.

I don't see any compability issues here.

Edit: Actually, there is no R4 Del, so you'll need to use Fn or End in that spot.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the description for the Obscure kit claims it has ortho 40% support, but seems to be missing some keys for that to be true: namely a 1u R3 Caps/Fn key, and a second 1u R4 shift key. Are those keys somewhere else?

?? Pretty sure there's a reasonably sized number of 40% users (and growing) who want high quality caps for their boards. For me at least, I like Tab as R2, but either way, there doesn't seem to be any 1U R3 coverage. And pretty sure most people have both a left and a right shift on any given layout.

honestly you should be happy they even added a 40s kit at all. its a battle to get designers to include it in the first place. I'm happy its in this, i bought it. I would have preferred more accents to more keys that hardly anyone uses. r3 caps? r3 fn? those are such rare layouts within an already rare subset of the community. if you really want that kind of support youre better off getting non sculpted or a different moq system.

at the end of the day the 40s kit is already expensive for basic minimum coverage on top of the base kit. if everyone who wanted extra keys got their way the 40s set would cost like 75+ and probably not even hit moq.

I googled your board and compared they keys, it looks like you need the base and numbers kits to give you coverage. But just compare the keys you have on your board and check off the keys in the sets to figure out what you need. It shouldn’t be too difficult to work out what keys you need at minimum.

And yes it really won’t ship until next year, it’s a limited run order placed at a manufacturer that already has a backlog of many months.

the ^ is apple icon for control, the top row is the apple escape icon.

I would like to get some of these kits. Current GMK mold or tooling for some of the key caps in the set have alignment, kerning and consistency issues. The worst ones are "Print" and "Scroll." Should I expect to see more of the same in the finished products or will it be fixed and closer to renders?

Difficult to say at the moment I think. I think we will have to assume that the Quality Control will be better carried out by GMK, apart from that, this set will only go into production at the beginning of next year, so they have plenty of time to do their work well at GMK.

I`m in for standard, numbers and norde and just wanted to order alternate also for an all black outer keycaps theme. But just noticed it is not possible to make a proper ISO-DE layout becourse of an missing black keycap left of key number one (^/°). Or are there more black keycaps missing that i did not noticed?

Knowing that it will certanly not be possible... Is it possible to add that key in the norde or the alternate kit?
Not sure if there are even more missing black keycaps for the other possible layouts within the norde kit.

No you should be fine with just the base

the base doesn't have a 2u shift, so if you build with the arrow keys it won't fill everything

if you build without the arrow keys it will be fine though

Yes, 4310 before extras (2940 Light 1370 Dark). The numbers I have right now are 3390 Standard and 632 Mist, so 4022 total. With how crazy last day sales are and considering vendors haven’t updated in a few hours/ a day we might even be within 100 range right now!

The Base Kit is still available for pre-order from at least one of the vendors. I don't think the Modern kit is still available though.

I had ordered GMK Ashes before this and it has been postponed to Q2 2021. So you can assume, that the same will happen with these.

Wow is it really August? That seems like a very long time to wait, even though I have heard that GMK is really struggling to keep to any of its schedules at the moment due to COVID and the extreme growth in the number of keysets being produced at the moment. Hopefully they start to ramp up production soon and the estimates can start to come down as it is really affecting my purchasing decisions to know that I may have to wait over a year before a product that I spend hundreds of dollars on will be shipping to me. And it seems like the waits are only increasing as there are many more sets in group buy per month then there are sets being shipped to consumers. I just wonder if there will be a breaking point where there is a new manufacturer that can come in and take up the slack of the GMK queue and become the manufacturer of choice in the hobby. Interesting times.

I received my MoDo 2 circle gray deskmat and it's way different than the original pic. Colors are more towards blue than gray. I already opened a ticket with my vendor, but I post here to keep track and see if there is someone who experienced the same inconsistency.

The deskmat came in way a really cool grey. I expected the greys to be pretty dark and neutral. Color matching was not good for the deskmats.

If you are located in the US Omnitype will have extras sometime after the set delivers to all customers, Qoda Studios(Janglad's Store) has extras right now, I purchased a few MoDo Light kits from him when he had those extras, I live in the US and he shipped with DHL so it shipped real quickly.

got my package yesterday. didnt come around to putting it on a board yet though. its my first gmk set so i dont have much to compare it to. they feel nice and the font is better than the epbt set Im currently using. On the other hand all spacebars are at least slightly warped (which i guess was to be expected) .
I really like the colors and would say the renders did a good job conveying, what we are getting.

I have to say though, this gmk packaging is really REALLY aweful. I got a couple extra kits and it´s really sad to not being bale to put it all in one place. For the price that we end up paying, that part of the experience is a let down. Especially since my epbt kit was a lot better in that regard.

To end on a posititve note: There was an extra key I wasnt expecting (picture attached) that looks like a plastic version of the rama aluminium grey. At least I think it´s extra, since i cant see it on any of the original pictures.

Seems like Modo 2 is a decent set by today's GMK standards. Good colour-matching, maybe good surface-texture. Too bad about the spacebars. Other people will report in if that's an issue.

If they gave you a free fake plastic Modo RAMA, that's a nice touch. I ordered the real one, because I liked the pattern.

This is my main gripe with the current packaging. I like to keep the boxes of keycap sets I buy, but then storage becomes very messy. I have to keep the base in the box and child kits in ziploc bag or container. It is fine if you have few sets, but anything more, it is just annoying to manage.

Shame to watch what happened to GMK packaging. After all, you can buy affordable keycaps and switches from AKKO, MG, even those cheap PBT sets on AliExpress, and get packaging that's much more complete (and useful). Not to mention the MT3 sets, which use much larger keycaps than GMK, but come organized in orderly, protected packages that generally prevent the keycaps from flying around.

Same issue here, the MoDo 2 circle gray deskmat is nothing like the renders, it is blue in color not gray. It's been more then 6 months since this was reported first, and nothing has been done yet? Maybe Omnitype does not care just because it has the old Dixie name on the deskmat

. I was told all deskmats was the same, or was it bad batch or something?

Well, all these deskmats are produced in one batch, usually. They have just been sitting with your vendor (likely Mykeyboard in your case) until the caps arrived. So, there is no change to be expected there, unfortunately. /Johannes

Yeah, no worse than some others tho.

For those who wanna fix it: Take a disassembled stem and center it in the rama that’s faced down. Lightly squeeze needlenose pliers wrapped in cloth, like an old shirt. Should be able to get it pretty square. If it’s real close, just use a little square of Saran Wrap over the stem and then press the cap down.

GMK MoDo 2 obviously is already shipping, so we will have to ship the replacements to all customers of the Aesthetic kit once they arrive."
