I'm interested in building something resembling the Axis-49, a discontinued MIDI controller (electronic instrument).

https://wooting.io/product/lekker-switch-linear45...but I have no experience in keyboard design, so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. The main question I'm wondering about at the moment is the key spacing for the PCB.
The original hexagonal keycaps were 20mm across, from point to point (10mm edges) with 1mm spacing between adjacent edges. Even if the Lekkers were crammed together, the keycaps would need to be slightly larger than this for the redesign, but I'm wondering how close I can get; what the minimum practical spacing between the Lekkers will be. I can see that they need to sit in some kind of base/plate/grid, but I'm not sure how thin/fine the divisions can be while still providing enough stability. Perhaps it depends on the materials.
Does this make any sense...? This is my first foray into keyboard design, and any pointers would be appreciated. :-)
