[IC] CopyCap
« on: Sun, 13 December 2015, 07:34:35 »
Hello everyone!

About a year ago I picked up an old Xerox keyboard, that I think was from a Xerox 6085 system.
I really like the colorway and legends on it and would like to bring it back to life and share it with the community.

Here's a picture of the set I have.

As you can see it's AZERTY (and ALPS) and I can't use it.
So my plan is to make it for QWERTY (and Cherry MX).

So far here is what I have for the TKL part of it

It uses:
- Caliban Medium for the font legend (symbols are still being worked on)
- Off white for the alphas caps, with dark purple legends
- Gray mods, with black legends

Right now the plan would be to use SP DCS profile caps that would be dye-sub printed (the orange Esc key will be a problem). I think that dye-sub will be the easiest and cheapest solution for this set seeing that it uses all custom legends, and SP seems to fit that bill.

As I said, everything is still a work in progress and things can and will change. But I would like to know what everyone thinks of the idea. So please don't hesitate to leave a comment and your thoughts on this idea.

Thanks!

I'd be in if it was DCS double shot, but dye sub is not my preferred legend system. I know the long arrows and lines in some caps cannot be done double shot, but still, I am not sure if I do like them.

AFAIK those long lines are doable. Basically its not how long the lines are, its how much space is given between the lines. In this case those can be easily be doubleshot :)

Anyway Alphas remind me somehow of hyperfuse. And its my most prefered colorway (if looking on it as only blanks).

The OG set is dyesub and fantastic.  I'd be in for certain if it was Alps, but not so much with MX.

The only problem with doing it DS would be that every key would need a custom legend and that would make the price rocket out of control.
You should maybe reconsider your thought about dye-sub. Look at the picture of the original caps. They're from the 80s and still look great, just like IBM model M caps  ;)

Yeah I guess it does a bit, and the purple alpha legends don't help it  :blank:
My plan isn't to copy HF, but to get as close as I can to the Xerox set

Yes it really is a great set  :)
I was first thinking of doing it for ALPS, but seeing that the Alpine Winter set just ran. I'm not sure there will be enough orders for another ALPS set. I guess I can make some poll and see what more people are will to buy, once everything is done.

Perhaps I'm missing the point but it doesn't hurt to ask: why not use Gateron instead of SP? The profile is similar (Cherry vs DCS) but the keys are much thicker and they're cheap (less than $30 for a full set, to which you have to add the cost of dyesubbing). Their off-white alphas and dark grey mods would work great with your choice of legend colors.

That's not the plan for this set. My plan is to keep it as close as possible to the original set from Xerox

As much as love the look of them, I also think that there has been too many SA sets lately.
And as far as I know SP doesn't make any custom SA PBT sets.

I like it!  The arrows are unique and do remind me of our old copy machine symbols

You know, although he totally botched the saying his isn't so bad. I would change it to read as follows:

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, I won't get fooled again."

And regarding the IC, I think it loos really nice. You seem to have matched the original to a T!
